Joy Reid, an anti gay bigot, let Jason Johnson lie to our faces about a gay candidate

on a supposedly liberal network. Jason Johnson flat out lied about the man who was shot by police being unarmed. He had a knife, literally no one has disputed that. Joy Reid didn't challenge him at all on this. He also was totally dishonest about the context of his telling a black person he wasn't asking for her vote. The voter had accused him of being at the vigil only to get votes. It was in answer to that, that he said he didn't want her vote. If Ronan Farrow had written posts about blacks as racist as Joy's posts were about gays he would have been fired faster than you could type fired. He surely would have been fired for letting a journalist lie about Cory Booker as blatantly as Jason Johnson lied about Mayor Pete.

Has she said that she has a problem with people who are gay? I'm not too familiar with her, so am asking a genuine question.

10. The 1st one is a problem, if it's true.

The second one is just trying to explain other people's reactions or thoughts or beliefs. There's nothing wrong with that, in healthy discourse on a topic.

Not sure why someone added red lines. That's an indication that the post has been doctored.

So maybe both posts were doctored, to begin with.

In any case, these are ancient. And she's not famous or important or influential, that I know of.

The screen caps were underlined to emphasize, but those original blog entries existed in the Wayback Machine. So unless someone hacked her blog AND the Wayback Machine (pro-tip, didn’t happen), you’re just defending someone who has proven not to be an ally of lgbtq people.

Not to mention she has NEVER apologized for this.

16. The red lines were added to screen shots that the person put in their thread

That person had a link to each and everyone of their posts and it was from the wayback machine. Now as to what the problem is with the 2nd post. LGBT teens are, by far, the highest risk of suicide and the mindset she endorses (and make no mistake she endorses it) is why many gay adults won't help gay youth. I am not that old but when I was a teen LGBT centers and helplines wouldn't help anyone under 18 for fear of being accused of this very thing. Gay kids died because of the thoughts behind posts like these.

22. And here is what I am referring to about adults not helping gay kids because of this mindset

https://medium.com/james-finn/queer-teens-are-people-first-f70071ad9c70

“Can I ask how old you are?”

“17. Next month.”

“Ooh. That’s tough, my friend. I don’t have any resources available for minors.”

“I just wanna know where I can meet other people like me. I’m kinda desperate. I don’t know anybody. Can’t I come to one of the things you were talking about?”

“Yeah, well, here’s the thing. If you’re under 18, most organizations won’t be able to welcome you. There are legal problems and consequences. I’m very sorry.”

“I just! Please. Do you know how hard it was for me to call? Can’t you tell me anything?”

http://www.newnownext.com/lady-gaga-glitter-quote-gay-arkansas-college-sign/06/2019/

“Timing of the sign in the summer also was considered,” Davis continued. “We have to be very mindful of the hundreds of minors that are on campus during the summer which further complicates an environment that is normally programmed for adults and our very meaningful conversations about ourselves and our world.”

80. Once you add something to a post, that's doctoring it, technically speaking.

When someone went into the text and changed it in any way, that's altering it.

In proper writing, when that is done, the text is in quotes, then afterwards the alteration person says "emphasis added." To make it clear that all that was changed was the addition of underlining.

On social media, that makes the text suspect, since this isn't proper writing. Just my opinion on that one.

But I don't care for her, anyway, which is why I don't know much about her. I never watch her show.

There is something absolutely wrong about her 'explanation." The red lines are a highlighting mechanism, which you are well aware of. She has a show on a major cable network so of course she's influential. Not your best effort in an attempt be be contrarian.

97. I heard something about it a while back.

But the posts were many years ago, and she denied it. I didn't research it, read the posts or emails, and I don't really remember the details, if I even read them. Because I didn't care for her, to begin with. I've never seen her show. But I did dismiss the charges, sort of, because they were so old.

Opinions of gay marriage and such have changed drastically in the last decade. If you remember, there was gay marriage advocacy going on in the 2004 election, and it was an unpopular thing at the time. Most of the country wasn't in favor of gay marriage, as I recall, and esp didn't want it to be a political issue. I think the gay marriage issue was being talked about by the candidates who weren't in the running, really, for the nomination. It was not a widely held position.

You are trying to reframe this to suit your agenda. Sorry to burst your bubble.

93. You don't know what Sanders wrote as an adult....

But you are familiar with what JR wrote? Seems knowing one would be a bit more important in the big picture.

This is what Sanders was promoting to the public.

A man goes home and masturbates his typical fantasy. A woman on her knees, a woman tied up, a woman abused.

A woman enjoys intercourse with her man — as she fantasizes being raped by 3 men simultaneously.

The man and woman get dressed up on Sunday — and go to Church, or maybe to their 'revolutionary' political meeting. - Bernie Sanders

94. I am familiar with what Joy wrote because it was all over the news last year.

30 years ago, I was 9. I had no idea who Bernie Sanders was. He didn’t pop up on my radar until a few years ago. I disagreed with a lot of his policies (especially wrt to systemic racism), and never gave him a second look. So, no. I never knew he wrote that. It is, however, deplorable. I won’t say much more as denigrating Bernie is forbidden in DU’s TOS.

Once again, this thread is about Joy Reid, not Bernie Sanders. So I still fail to see why you brought him up? It’s obvious I don’t support him. You’re trying to turn my rejection of homophobia into hidden sexism, and that is NOT cool. Take your agenda elsewhere.

was not to call more attention to it and thus move on, or heard it and decided to give the guest's intent the benefit of the doubt.

She has apologized for past comments and I am not one who will hold onto past grievances and mistakes like a starving dog with its bone. If I were, I'd scarcely talk to those who have derided and discriminated against ALL women from the very start of time to the present and whose open misogyny continues to this day. Not to mention those leaders of their own very important movements who have not bothered to be concerned with women's bodily autonomy until it became politically "convenient".

She literally said I don't believe I posted these posts. That isn't an apology. That is gas lighting. A kid was just had his admission to Harvard revoked for racist stuff he wrote at age 16 and quite justifiably so. That was despite his having admitted he did it and offering a lame apology. It would be one thing if she said I did this, I am sorry I did this, I no longer believe this because of people like Jonathan Capehart (who was on her panel the day you are claiming she apologized) but that isn't what she did. I watched that panel. You can't gas light me on this. She blamed others and claimed she didn't do it and claimed she had evolved from her posts which were less bad. It is still extremely hard in many areas to be a gay teacher precisely because of the line she was touting in her posts that were in 2008 not 1958. If she were to ever offer a real apology I might actually accept that. Instead she is like a drunk who trashed your house at a party and claims not to remember but they are going to change.

I genuinely do not believe I wrote those hateful things because they are completely alien to me. But I can definitely understand, based on things I have tweeted, have written in the past, why some people don’t believe me,” she said. “For that, I am truly, truly sorry.”

That is exactly and precisely what I SAID SHE SAID. I said she said I DO NOT BELIEVE I WROTE THOSE HATEFUL THINGS. That isn't an apology that is gas lighting. And on the subject of gas lighting, the politico link doesn't address these posts at all (it addresses McCain and Ann Coulter). The deadline link I just got done quoting.

The money.cnn post doesn't address the anti gay posts more McCain and some border posts.

The variety.com post is about a different set of homophobic posts.

I won't waste a free NYT read on your NYT link. But of the ones that weren't behind fire walls, one was about the posts I mentioned and it BACKED ME UP IN WHAT I SAID SHE SAID. The rest didn't mention them at all. You owe me an abject apology for your straight splaining.

Honestly, how many times have you said those kind of (as YOU put it "god damned" words yourself)?

Seeing something we wrote long ago that does not reflect how one feels NOW will often elicit a comment or thought that "I can't believe I wrote/said/believed that).

That is how most would interpret her comments--Most who don't have OTHER reasons for holding her in such disdain.

But of course you could not possibly have other motivations in continually propagating that and intentionally misrepresenting her meaning, now could you? May your misdirected hate and contempt keep you warm.

IMO any cop who deals with the public without turning on his body cam should be disciplined the first time and fired the next time.

If the body cam had been on and showed the shooting to have been justified whether the victim came at him with a knife or just had a knife wouldn't be an issue as the footage would've shown what really happened.

And then Mayor Pete maybe would've handled the protestors better. He's certainly got to get better with AA community relations, espescailly with the botched former police chief matter on his record

Why are so many blaming Joy Reid and Jason Johnson for a poorly handled confrontation with protestors?.

And no matter what one thinks of how the protesters were handled it is nothing short of a lie to say what Johnson did in that video (and note the video of Pete with the protesters wasn't played in that clip) but the video clearly shows a woman shouting at him that he was only there to get our votes and that is when he said he didn't want her vote. Let the investigation play out. How do you know he had a knife? Because a known racist police officer said so? And police don't lie right? Why would Joy challenge him? Because the default is that we should believe police? GTFOH! We can pull up story after story of police lying and planting evidence so I'm not sure why she needed to challenge him when it has NOT been proven that he had a knife. No camera, racist cops, transporting the man in the cop car instead of waiting for an ambulance, all of this looks above board. Sure. Police are not judge, jury and executioner.

See, I know some white folks don't think so, but black folks are supposed to have their day in court when they are accused of a crime. There needs to be an investigation. Even if it is proven that he had a knife, Do we know the officer followed protocol? Did he go after the police officer with the knife? We don't know yet. This police department has deep rooted racial issues.

What Mayor Pete couldn’t fix about the South Bend cops
The fatal shooting that derailed Pete Buttigieg’s campaign this week has a 7-year backstory.

[link:https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/06/22/pete-buttigieg-police-shooting-227206|

But early last Sunday that all changed, when a white police officer in Buttigieg’s South Bend police department who had been accused of excessive force in the past shot and killed a 54-year-old black man. Officials said the victim was rifling through parked cars and armed with a knife; the officer hadn’t activated his body camera video and the camera on his dash hadn’t switched on either so there was no independent record of the fatal encounter. Buttigieg left the campaign trail to deal with fallout from an encounter that almost instantly was swept into the fraught national debate over how police treat minorities in their communities.

44. The article highlights the real problem Pete has.

It's years of mistrust between the police force and the community. After his initial mistake, he has been unable to build trust. It takes years to do that. But it pays off big when an incident like this happens because the community will give you the benefit of the doubt. Without that trust, they blame you for letting it happen.

He fired a goddamn police chief who was under FBI investigation because that is his job.

Lets follow that all the way through

57. Yes-

It takes years to rebuild trust. He's in a unique position to show the rest of the nation how to handle a situation like this. This is happening all across the country where black and brown people do not feel safe in their own communities. The reaction by politicians has not been adequate. Its important that he does not have the same ol same ol response that they have. It will set him apart from other politicians.

He can take the lead on this matter and show others around the country how it should be done, make sure the bad apples on the police force are rooted out. Take steps to make sure the community has a say so in policing the police.

41. I wish people...

… could all be perfect, all the time. Until then, I'll take the Joy Reids, Mayor Petes, and Joe Bidens with all their flaws, over the Donald Trumps, Dick Cheneys and Mike Pences of the world.

83. You have a perfect right to feel as you do...

and so does everyone else. I have made mistakes for which I would like to be forgiven. I have apologized in person without any "buts" in my apologies only after realizing I have, at times past, attempted to offer excuses to semi-justify the thought process that brought me to those words or deeds for which I now apologize, whole-heartedly and without caveat. I did it, I said it, I was wrong. We are all at different stages in our own processes. I am a member of the LGBTQ community & I accept Joy's most evolved apology. I see she is trying to get it right. If she didn't care, she wouldn't try. You can feel free to dislike her forever if you wish, but that wouldn't work for me.

103. We're back to smearing Joy Reid again? Dull...

The irony is the first person to make a big issue out of some of Joy's ancient blog posts (Glenn Greenwald) gets into an absolute tizzy whenever his old racist, anti-immigrant, warmongering Bush-loving blog posts get thrown back in his face... And to this day I don't recall anyone calling motherfucking Greenwald a 'bigot'...

And don't worry, Glenn's smearing of Reid had absolutely NOTHING to do with her being a black woman opposing Trump -- Signed, the other dozen high profile black women politicians/pundits on Twitter who Glenn has regularly smeared like Imani Gandy, Kamala Harris and Donna Brazile (until she wrote her little tattletale book pissing all over Hillary, of course)...

And given your skepticism of Johnson and Reid, I must say I'm disappointed to see you accept the "official" police narrative of the incident without question, dsc. I don't think this is a battle you want to be on the wrong side of.

Nope.

She’s a liar and a homophobe. I could have some empathy for her if she came clean, but I hate liars more than anything. Spineless. She’s never impressed me.

107. No, I don't "swallow" it...

But what I am saying is if Reid's old blog is fair game then let's get every-fucking-body's out there and we'll see what's what...

Regardless, I have a bigger issue of "swallowing official police narrative after a racially motivated shooting" bullshit all in the name of stanning for a candidate, but that's just me...
