Joe BidenCongratulations to our presumptive Democratic nominee, Joe Biden!

Fri Mar 8, 2019, 02:01 AM

Why the continual referral of Senator Sanders as BS?

Seems a holdover from the last Democratic primary and hard feelings from that. If posters want to engage in constructive debate with Mr. Sanders' supporters maybe a simple "Bernie" or "Sanders" might work.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Is their sometimes ill intent?

More generally, can someone have ill intent in using a nickname/initials, or even someone's full name?

13. My favorite though is "sanders," with a small "s"... just a sign that Bernie is gaining traction

and poses a real threat to the established way of doing things. Bernie has shown us a new way forward, by shining the light of truth and exposing injustice on progressive issues that, until recently, most candidates feared to raise. That's the mark of a true Leader... with a capital "L"!!

Most people just refer to him as "Bernie" Don't want in any way of course to confuse him with others with his last name to say the least. I think Bernie is the Best because IMHO he's the only one with balls enough to take on Wall Street, FED and the Billionaire Class. Bernie is the one who will help us take Corporate Lobbyists out of Politics. Haven't they done enough?

It will be tough in the GE to bash Trump on his refusing to release his tax returns when the temporary Democrat is also doing the same thing.

Don't give me he released the one year BS. Release the 10 years, like Hillary did. And please, no crap about how "poor he is, what do you think he's hiding?"

I won't know the answer to that until he shows us the taxes.

11. Just another way of showing disrespect to one of our leading Democratic candidates...

I look at it as an endorsement of sorts... that Bernie is a threat to the established way of politically doing things and a threat to winning the Democratic Party's nomination. Soon, though, it will be PS... President Sanders, and maybe then(?) they'll start showing him proper respect.

...and please don't give me that "he caucuses with the Dems". Either you're a Democrat or you're not. As a matter of fact, last year, BS won the Democratic Party nomination for the US Senate in Vermont, and turned down the nomination, in order to run just as an Independent.

Now, he wants the Democratic nomination for President one year later.

Go figure.

143. Because the best admission is by way of denial.

I can't speak to others.

But last election I referred to HRC as HRC and BS as BS. Tertius non datur, so there wasn't much choice.

Trump was Trump, Paul was Paul, but using bare surnames is not the same as what I still think is the overfamiliar "Hillary" (hardly know the woman) or "Bernie" (again, just a tad too faux intimate, sort of like calling Obama "Barry" or OAC "Sandy" or even KH "Kammy", if anybody even calls her that).

I get that familiarity is the frame, but I don't usually like that kind of linguistic manipulation and react badly to it. Since I couldn't refer to HRC as "Clinton" (referent's taken by a prior CiC/POTUS in the WH), that left HRC. "Sanders" still reeks of chicken in my set of connotations, so BS it was.

It made for a nice kind of (a)symmetry. (D) were initials, (R) were surnames.

Seriously-- JFK. LBJ.
Heck, the second Bush only got ONE initial-- W.

If you wanted to shorthand Bernie Sanders name like we do with so many other prominent politicians' names, what would you use?

Reminds me of US Grant, whose original first name was Hiram, so his initials were HUG. Not manly enough. He dropped the first name and added S (just the letter) to be US Grant.

Maybe Bernie should add a U, and be BUS?

Harry Truman didn't have a middle name either but he just chose S as his middle initial for gravitas.

Bernie can choose an O and he will be the BOS or a U and he will be a BUS.

Then BS and his supporters won't have to feel victimized by some grand conspiracy and OPs like this won't be necessary.

None of us would think of calling Carter, Clinton or Obama by those initials. Partially because they are commonly associated with other phrases, like BC/ AD, like Jesus Christ, and like Body Odor. BS is commonly associated with Bull Shit. We have 15 or more current or potential candidates running for President, and only one gets called by two initials here, and those just so happen to be derogatory.

Initials are rarely used for a politician, and even then only when their first middle and last names are being abbreviated.

Can anyone here name a single American politician EVER, other than Bernie Sanders, who has been identified by two initials by anyone?

154. Because BS are his initials.

Bernie has control over his name, there are legal ways to change it. I was thinking George Oscar Darling might be appropriate.

161. I smell fear, and a lot of it at that.

The establishment are shitting their collective britches. Donnie Douche nearly had a stroke discussing socialism with Morning Dope. At one point he said he'd vote Trump if it came to it. Dope pointed out Donnies overstep, and a very red faced Donnie agreed. It was glorious. This genie ain't go'in back in the bottle!!!

165. AOC, HRC, JFK -- all instantly recognizable by their initials.

I looked on Wikipedia and it doesn't appear that BS has a middle initial, so we can hardly be blamed for not using it.

If you don't like his initials, blame his parents.

175. If one truly cares about being respectful...

he is a sitting Senator of the United States and much like we refer to people who practice medicine as Dr. the proper honorific is Senator. I have tried to observe the honorific rule regardless of my opinion for all politicians, until donald. I don't want to play juvenile games with his name, but I don't want to give the impression I respect him at all.

181. I can't be "respectful" to anyone who denigrates the Democratic party...

I can't be "respectful" to anyone who denigrates the Democratic party by saying it's "the party of the elite" or "the party of the one-percent". It serves no good purpose for anyone to state that the Democratic party is "corrupt" or "feeble" or "ideologically bankrupt".

How can I "respect" anyone who intentionally does harm to the party with the claims that there's "no difference between Democrats and the GOP"?? These things are false. They're harmful. They are divisive and they weaken the party.

All I'm saying is that anything that weakens the Democratic party is something that benefits the GOP... and Trump... and Russia.

At this important juncture, we need to be doing everything we can to convince voters to come out and vote FOR Democrats... to support, donate and volunteer FOR Democrats. If people start to believe that there's "no difference" in the parties, then what incentive do they have to even bother to come out and vote?

It's just that people have to EARN my respect. I don't give it automatically just because someone has a "title" or an "office".

182. Most of the time, I refer to him as Bernie. I use initials for

almost everyone. Most of the time when I'm writing about him, there's a negative context and frustration--so using his name is an indication of restraint on my part. If I've referred to him as simply "BS," it means I was furious.

It's a sophomoric attempt at being clever. It's just so funny look what they did there. They used his initials as a double entendre, oh ho ho ho isn't that just so clever.

193. Some might think it should be BNADS.

Bernie "Not a Democrat" Sanders. Me... I'm of the "if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck by gosh it must be a duck" school of thought when it comes to identifying a particular persons political persuasions.

I'm OK with BS or simply Bernie. We could get formal and call him Bernard, as that is his legal first name.
