Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumDear Democrats, Here's How to Guarantee Trump's Reelection
PoliticoThis might seem impossible. Donald Trump remains historically unpopular because the past three years have cemented the publics image of the president as a deeply dishonest, erratic, narcissistic, Twitter-addicted bully. As a result, a stunning 57 percent of voters say they will definitely not vote to reelect him next year and he trails Democratic challengers in key states. Trump himself seems to have given up on swing voters, instead focusing on ginning up turnout among his hard-core base. But, as columnist Henry Olsen points out, this is unlikely to be successful because millions of reluctant Trump voters from 2016 have already shown a willingness to bail on him by voting for Democrats in last Novembers midterms.
Even so, Trump could still win reelection, because he has one essential dynamic working in his favor: You.
Trumps numbers are unmovable, but yours are not. He doesnt need to win this thing; he needs for you to lose it. There are millions of swing voters who regard Trump as an abomination but might vote for him again if they think you are scarier, more extreme, dangerous, or just annoyingly out of touch.

(8,361 posts)Some cons do not like Trump's vulgar creepy overtly wacky presidency, that's nice. BUT, they also have no concern with income inequality, no issue with the lack of gun control. No issue with deregulating Wall Street, no issue with racist cops that kill people of color., not serious about climate change either. I could go on, but I think you get my perspective of these "reasonable" cons.
They are part of a seriously dangerous political party, long before Trump became president.

(94,501 posts)The point is that there are many issues on which Democrats can appeal to middle of the road voters (where the voters we win elections with are), however going TOO far to the left plays into the Republican message that the Democratic nominee is on the fringe. Doesn't mean you can't support progressive policies, but how you CAMPAIGN on them is a critical issue.

As I have pointed out numerous times...I am a moderate Independent in a red district of a battleground state. I never donate or volunteer for campaigns. I'm a tough nut to crack and I can spot a pandering fake 10 miles away. I've donated to Beto O'Rourke 4 times this month. I have a heart condition and may have cancer...they are trying to figure it out. I am doing home exercise to build up my strength and fitness so I can volunteer for Beto. THAT is how much I believe in him and his message. THAT is how much he speaks to me.
If Democrats want to win they need to smarten up and give that man the credit he has worked hard to earn. He has the ability to REALLY pull people into the process who otherwise were jaded, disgusted, disillusioned, disaffected, etc. Beto is the one.

(47,468 posts)programs. And we know that this tag will be used by the Republicans regardless of who the nominee is.
Most voters do not want a revolution. None ever took place in this country because most do not hate the rich; they want to be rich.
One example: most voters have their employers provided health insurance and they like it - until they do not, of course. But they do not want it to change.
Most voters do not want "government" running their lives, never mind that the "government" of course is an important part of their lives but most voters do not stop and think about it. Remember the senior citizen who, in a rally against ACA did not want "government to touch his Medicare?"
Oh, one more point: Medicare is not a healthcare program, it is an insurance program and we do pay for it, about $300 a month per person.
Cynical? yes, but we have seen voters voting against interest, again and again. The most recent example were all these mothers, mostly, with special needs kids, who were dependent on the ACA rule of no pre-existing conditions, but still voted for Trump in 2016 and then started protesting.
