Buttigieg defends decision to attend debate despite South Bend controversy

The Hill

Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a 2020 contender, is defending his decision to attend the first Democratic debate despite tensions in his city of South Bend, Ind., after a white police officer fatally shot a black man.

"We have to be able to do many things at once," Buttigieg said in an MSNBC interview on Wednesday, indicating his plans to attend the debate.

"This is not just a policy question, this is a moral question," he continued. "And everything that all of us do, we do in the shadow of systemic racism that has poisoned the relationship between communities of color and police departments everywhere in the country.”

Buttigieg previously spoke with residents of South Bend during a tense Sunday town hall meeting.

"What I found on that stage at that town hall was, it was my job to absorb all of that pain, absorb all of that anguish, knowing that I could talk about all of the things we've done, but clearly we haven't done enough," he said on MSNBC. "And accepting responsibility for that because I'm in charge."

Sure there's a problem in his hometown, but why is his attending the debate even in question?

The so called anger from the black community will prove to be temporary because of the shooting. It was quite unfortunate, but the suspect had a knife and was an immediate danger to the officer . I think all this will go away in a few months as he collects more endorsements from well known black figures to show that he can be trusted. Pete is the only person in the race that has real life experience dealing with all types of problems in life, in war, and in politics. Every police shooting gets forgotten by the media, and when it is no longer mentioned in the news, it will cease to be a liability for him and at that point it will become an asset to show that he has overcome the problem and solved it as an example of his leadership to the nation.

First it was Biden, and now Buttigieg. If anyone of the top tier makes a tiny slip at the debate, it will be their turn for the overwrought news coverage.
Sure they should have covered the problems in South Bend, but constant questions about if he should debate is just nit-picking. But that's what the media do.

so they will go after Democrats endlessly on this type of shit. while ignoring many of the things on trump.

and that makes them fair and balanced and they get their both sides do it coverage.
