Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWednesday Debate predictions
Like many I suspect, I think Warren will rule the night, and her post-debate poll numbers will improve. What to look for is whether anyone else has a night (or even just a moment) that makes them stand out, giving them a significant bump from where they are now. IOW, I think the contest will be for who does second-best after Warren, and may have a chance to jump-start to be seen as a more serious contender.
I think the only ones who might break out somewhat are Beto O'Rourke or Tulsi Gabbard. My prediction is that, if anyone, it will not be Cory Booker, Bill de Blasio, Julián Castro, John Delaney, Jay Inslee, Amy Klobuchar, or Tim Ryan. I think all those campaigns are pretty much DOA. We'll see...

Good one. I hope his next question is, "should I drop from running", at which point all candidates and the public will, in unison, utter a loud "YES".

(10,819 posts)This is an opportunity for a candidate like O'Rourke to hit the mark, initiate a memorable phrase/meme and put his campaign back on track.
That being said, I agree that Warren is likely to rule the room.

(393 posts)Barring a melt-down, I expect Warren to do well and make the best impression. She has pretty much policy papers on everything. I think her only "weakness" is foreign policy. But it probably won't come up in the 1st debate. She speaks with passion and I think it will make a good impression.
I think the candidate with the greatest possibility to make an impression is Gabbard. I don't think she has gotten a lot of press, but her ideas are interesting - from what I have heard/seen. I think her delivery is what will matter.
O'Rourke is kind of too long winded before making his point; once he does it generally is memorable. However, because all candidates will have limited time to respond, this format may not work to his advantage. Of all the candidates on stage with Beto, I think he is the most charismatic, hopefully that will come through with the nation watching.
The other possible surprise might be Booker. He's quite articulate and might be able to get in a few sound bites in his limited time. His problem, like many politicians, he doesn't say anything too provocative and that might be needed to stand out.
I can't imagine any of the other candidates standing out. Asked any question, their first reaction is to not say anything too controversial; which makes them all sound alike. That said, de Blasio might be interesting in a comical way - in my opinion. Kind of tone deaf to politics.

(34,857 posts)Mostly because they're literally going against just one of the top contenders and will have more room to stand out.
I anticipate Booker will attack Biden, specifically on his comments (you know it'll be asked), which is a shame, since Biden won't be there to respond. I am looking to see if anyone comes to Biden's defense or if they just decide to attack Biden, either directly, or indirectly, the whole night.
I think it'll be more the latter attacks - 'we need to look at the future, not the past'.

(22,236 posts)I think there will be a lot of people in the general public who never saw or heard her before, though, who will be impressed enough to consider her as someone they might vote for.

2. What is happening with the unanswered subpoenas that republicans refuse to comply to.
3. About the lack of force behind starting impeachment proceedings for both Bar and the buffoon?
4. About the kids on the border
5. About protecting the election by making sure there is no hacking of the machines and no interference from Russia and the other countries the buffoon has asked for help.
6. Reversing the tax cuts
7. Health care for all, not just talk but what are they doing about it right now?
8. Taking the Senate? Why are so many people running for president and not for the Senate when that should be a priority? Why are Democrats failing to have a solid plan to regain the government, don't they understand that so many people running for president and so few for Senate will not help remove McConnell?
and more...I don't want to hear politics (bullshit rhetoric), I want to hear about what they are doing now.
