The mayor of Atlanta is endorsing Democrat Joe Biden for president in 2020, providing crucial support from a high-profile black female political leader.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms spoke to The Associated Press ahead of her scheduled Friday announcement. Bottoms says her decision came down to Bidens experience and her belief the former vice president is the candidate best positioned to beat President Donald Trump.
For me, it was most important that we have a president who doesnt have to walk in the door and figure out where the light switch is, that we have somebody who can lead on Day One, said Bottoms, who attended Thursday nights debate as a guest of Bidens wife, Jill.
The endorsement comes the morning after a powerful exchange between Biden and California Sen. Kamala Harris, the only black woman in the campaign. Harris sharply criticized Biden for his comments about working with segregationists and his past opposition to busing.

(4,341 posts)I don't understand it, for so many years so many people have been praising the benefits and the need to have a progressive candidate, and now there seems to be an infatuation with Biden, a man who is past his prime, past his time, and as Swalwell pointed out, should be passing the torch.
Three big mistakes he made last night, the biggest was his support for the NRA which I expect him to walk back any time now, and his "Oh, come on" answer when Bennet pointed out his failed "negotiation" with "Mitch".
Biden is the least progressive candidate we have, and for some reason people think he is going to help relive the Obama era, but he won't, he doesn't have the same character as Obama, and he has cozy up to republicans for too long. It is a fantasy to believe he can "negotiate" with republicans, if one thinks so then people have not been paying attention, there is nothing republicans will negotiate with Democrats unless it is a total win for republicans, and Joe is not the man to do it, he and "Mitch" had "negotiations" and Joe lost, that he wants too make it look like a win? I understand, but like Bennet pointed out, we are still suffering from Joe and "Mitch' "negotiation".
I am sorry to hear he is getting that endorsement.

(8,709 posts)And right now, I can hate on him all I want to allow breathing room for this small window of time for the strongest candidate possible. And I believe we have them. I don't know if you're PoC or not but I have to hedge my bets that Biden will not strip my citizenship and deport me that I know is 45's eventual plan for all of us not from Scandanavia or somewhere in Eruopia. I've lived his career since I was 11 when he first disgusted me way over 45 years ago.
I strongly believe that Biden is not my man but I'll be damned to allow 45 another 4 years because of ideological purity. I want everyone to bring it and let the best Democratic woman or man prevail. To do otherwise is to luxuriate in the fantasy of privilege.

Why can't we look at the pros and cons of each candidate objectively? The buffoon is going to eat Biden's lunch, he has started to do so already.
If anyone was a winner on the first debate I would say it was Bill de Blasio, and on the second debate it was a tie between Harris, Buttigieg, and Benett. Swalwell did not do bad, but not enough, but he is a good man, and very intelligent.
I apologize to all Biden fanatics, but I think Biden was the looser, he could not defend himself when Harris pointed out his lack of support on busing, his only defense when Bennet pointed out his losing negotiation with "Mitch", all he had to say was "Oh, come on", that is not defense, then he did not lift his hand when asked about Universal Healthcare to then say he did, and the BIG one, his defense of the NRA...Really????

(10,823 posts)Joe Biden held his ground despite the knife fight. Kamala's attack was a way of punching up while proving she has the moxie to take on Trump. The approach was successful on one level; I fully expect her poll numbers to improve.
However, the line that 'I don't believe you're a racist but . . .' is built on a foundation of sand. It created a lot of noise but the truth is that Biden has a long career of fighting for minority rights and the dignity of the individual. Insisting Joe Biden go on an apology tour is a failed approach because voters already know who Biden is and what he cares about. Just this morning, we heard that the mayor of Atlanta came out and endorsed the man.
Yes, we need someone who knows how to turn the lights on on Day 1. And who can whoop Donald Trump in 2020.
Despite all the naysayers and talking heads, I'm convinced that's Joe Biden. Yesterday, today and tomorrow.
AGO4JOE2020
Btw, if we want to start nitpicking, we can talk about Kamala Harris' inability to decide whether she wants to abolish private insurance companies or not. She received pushback when she originally said this, backtracked, and then last night threw her arm up in approval. Can't have it both ways!

Bottoms added that Biden's work on civil rights issues and his progressive resume demonstrate his commitment and that the remarks were blown out of proportion.
"My position is, if his explanation was good enough for John Lewis, then it's good enough for me," Bottoms added, referring to the Georgia congressman and civil rights icon who was among Biden's defenders after the controversy.

Nothing wrong with that. I just notice what his team is doing. Biden doesn't normally respond personally to attacks; his team does. The endorsements are calculated and timed for maximum effect. His message is crafted carefully, and he tries to stay on message....unity..work together....bipartisan....commonalities....his lengthy record on various things.
We are seeing a well-oiled Presidential campaign machine. Nothing wrong with that (and he's certainly had practice ), but I notice the difference between his campaign and most of the others. Very interesting.

(4,341 posts)If we want to do better, if we want our country to do better we need to be more objective.
I have always liked Biden, I think he is a good man, I think his service to the country has been good, or as good as his beliefs have taken him, but he is not the right person to help the country, he is not the right person to fight the republicans, he is friends with many of them, and no, he cannot negotiate with them either.
I could be wrong, it has happened many times, but I feel that we are making a mistake if Biden becomes the nominee, I urge all democrats to put their feelings on one side and take a look at the total picture with a very cold and hard view. As I said, I like Biden, I think he has done the best he can do, but he will not relieve the Obama years, he is not Obama, and he will be crashed by republicans.
We need someone who will intimidate the buffoon, and I never thought I would say this, but right now from his debate appearance I believe Bill de Blasio is that man. He has a very good record as Mayor of New York, not an easy city to work for in that capacity, and he will intimidate the buffoon. If not de Blasio then we need someone who wil not take any crap from the buffoon or any other creature form the republican party, but from what I have seen so far, de Blasio fulfills those requirements.
