Great Debate Last Night! There's Much More to Come.

It was much more interesting, I thought, than the first debate. Now, we have to wait for the weekend polling to see how people out there thought it went. We can listen to lots of commentary on the cable news networks and read posts on DU, but that doesn't tell us much about how actual Democratic primary voters feel.

I haven't seen any viewership numbers on the two nights of debating. I haven't looked for those stats yet, either. One thing's certain, it will be far fewer than the number of people who will start voting next year. There's a lot of time between these first candidate debates and Iowa's caucuses.

The primary election news cycle is just getting underway. The past two evenings with the candidates are just one element of what people will be seeing and thinking about. What seem like great moments during the debates will be replaced by an endless series of news stories and other information very quickly.

On Monday, there will be a flurry of new poll results. We will get some idea of how things are shaking out with the voters when they appear, but they're only a snapshot of voter sentiment. What happens every day and every week between now and the primary elections or caucuses in each state will replace these two debates in people's minds.

For one thing, we're probably going to see a few candidates drop out - hopefully to run for a Senate seat where they can win. The next debates should be among a smaller group and, perhaps, give each remaining candidate a little more time to speak. Then, there are all the public appearances, rallies, town halls, and other opportunities for our talented pool of hopefuls to make news.

It's early days, still.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

I watched a 'spectacle' - not debates two nights in a row.

They need to cut mikes when it's not folks turn to speak.

I seriously could not hear the responder to the question - with all of the side bar yelling and nonsense going on.

I seriously hope this debate stage is 8/9 viable people by the end of July.
