Joe Biden throws own campaign into turmoil after Harris attacks his record on race

Analysis by Stephen Collinson, CNN

Updated 10:48 AM ET, Fri June 28, 2019

Washington (CNN)Joe Biden stumbled into a potential campaign-defining moment Thursday that pitched his effort to win the Democratic nomination onto suddenly shaky ground.

Reeling from an attack by a much younger rival, Kamala Harris, the 76-year-old delivered an unfortunate soundbite at the Democratic debate that threatens to symbolize his biggest political liability.
"My time is up," he said, meaning to cut short one of his own answers but instead drawing attention to a question that haunts his campaign: Has his generation's time come and gone?
Harris' assault was breathtaking, appeared planned ahead of time and exposed a willingness to attack she had not previously shown in a campaign that started strong but has slumbered ever since.

18. One Debate

that Obama had was pretty bad and he came back. I wish folks wouldn't focus on who they like, but who can win the Electoral College which means state by state.

But it is unfortunate.

4. Whether his time is up has nothing to do with an exchange w/another candidate in one debate.

I don't get the connection the OP is trying to make.

5. The hyperbole surrounding this is stunning.

Somewhat funny to watch. The media is desperate to generate a horse race. Both Harris and Warren are strong enough to make it a horse race without their bullshit. Same thing happened in 16 with the only difference being Sanders wasn't strong enough to make it a horse race on his own. Sad to see certain factions jumping on board with the shady tactics of the MSM.

11. "Attack"? "Assault"? "Reeling"?

Good Lord - she asked him a question ... He gave an inadequate answer.

I missed all the attacking, assaulting, and reeling...

23. I feel like a loner.

I think Harris did very well for herself and Biden is doing well for himself. I really like them both and am big enough to understand some hits are going to come their way. Moreso for Biden right now. They are adults. In the end the voters will have their say.

I might actually get more worked up about these things if I didn't really respect and appreciate so many in our field. We are looking good. I understand how the media views their role. I don't like it but I do get it.

15. This interaction (I will not call it an "attack")...

It hurt Biden, and strengthened Harris, whose biggest selling point is her perceived ability to go after Trump in the debates. This said, Biden has time to recover. Today's speech, from what I'm reading (I haven't seen it, so reading about it on the Internet is my only source), is a good start. If Biden can perform strongly in the next debate, this will all be forgotten. If he has another night like this one, I think his bid is in trouble.

21. The Importance of Trust in the Absence of Recall

I would never suggest that any Democrat polling over 1% shares the otherwise ubiquitous human capacity to lie. But, hypothetically, if Biden were misrepresenting his record on busing, the absence of a national right of recall would mean that the trust deficit would be far more important to any rational voter than his failure to have been woke way back.

Reasonable people can disagree on the best way to integrate schools, but voting an honesty moderate to a four-year contract that's all guarantees and no incentives is a big ask, regardless of what his positions theoretically are at the moment. We know that Democrats never lie, but the general electorate does not, and that's something we have to prepare for.
