Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWere there any OPs here attacking DeBlasio for saying he's the only candidate with a black son?
Something that sets me apart from all my colleagues running in this race and that is for the last 21 years Ive been raising a black son in America. I have had to have very, very serious talks with my son including how to deal with the fact that he has to take special caution.
Since Kamala Harris is being jumped on for saying she was the only person of color on the stage and wanted to weigh in when race was being discussed, I'm wondering if the people who claim to be so upset with her for saying that showed similar upset when de Blasio said this the night before. Was he the subject of several OPs accusif him of playing the race card or whining or using his son's race inappropriately or any of the other criticisms that are being lobbed at Harris?
If he was, I missed it. And if he wasn't, why wasn't he? And if he didn't merit such a response here, why does Harris?
Just wondering.

(67,782 posts)...I don't recall Obama using the fact that he's black as an "issue" during the primary or general election campaign.
He would never have said anything like "as the only African American on this stage....."

(11,610 posts)Sorry I was too loose using the words "had a right"... I assume your implied argument referencing Obama in relation to this quote is that directly referencing race for a black politician is inappropriate or politically inexpedient?

(18,486 posts)If an issue of race had come up and he was about to be passed over without having an opportunity to say anything, he very well might have.
But that's not even the point. Even if Obama never did that, why should that have any bearing on whether Harris does?

(2,560 posts)all over Twitter how he used that line, and used it when running for NYC mayor. It's like one-upping "I have Black friends."
Very different when Kamala says what she said, and what Booker said after DeBlasio used that line.
