Biden's Electability Backed up by the Numbers. Better cross-over appeal than fellow Dems.

CNN) — Former Vice President Joe Biden's major selling point to Democratic primary voters is that he is in the best position to beat President Donald Trump in 2020. And while electability is difficult to measure, Biden has one thing going for him for now: the polls.

Biden continuously beats Trump by a wider margin than his Democratic opponents do.
A new Ohio Quinnipiac University poll is just the latest example of this phenomenon. Biden leads Trump by a 50% to 42% margin. Remember, Ohio wasn't close in 2016. Even if this is another example of a Midwestern poll underestimating Trump, if Biden wins the Buckeye State by merely a point, he's likely well on his way to an electoral college victory.

Of course, what I'm more interested in is the comparison between the Democratic candidates. All the non-Biden Democrats are either tied or trailing the President in Ohio.

Now if this were just one poll, Biden's electability argument wouldn't be strong. The thing is that Biden's been doing better across the board. He was the only Democrat to beat Trump in Texas. Biden also held the largest leads over Trump in Florida and Pennsylvania, both important states in the electoral college. He has also been consistently running at least 3 points better than his fellow Democrats against Trump nationally.

Which undermines the argument that Biden's lead is potentially artificially inflated by name recognition. I think there's some merit to that point and I say this because, almost entirely, Sanders seemed to mirror Biden's support. Since Sanders is pretty much as known as Biden, one could reason their leads are largely built out of name recognition (especially since they're ideologically different candidates).

But this Ohio poll is one of the first major polls that breaks from that. Sanders, who's well known, is actually doing worse than Mayor Pete and Harris, and equal to Booker and Warren (the former are tied with Trump, the latter down two). That's a big contrast and elevates the idea that it might not be name recognition that's boosting Biden. If it was, you'd assume Sanders would be doing much better head-to-head.

This is likely what is keeping his strong lead in the primary and general election polls. I hope that if he nabs the nomination, he will sustain these leads. I am dying to get that fuckface out of office. Also the poll is significant because gop has no path to victory in any form without winning Ohio.

Some polls show tightening -and averages have kept him well ahead of the pack, but we are only about to have our second debate. Things could change and things could stay the same. In the primary, I will be supporting Sanders. However, I am more than prepared to cast my vote for Biden over Trump yesterday. And I hope that the polling -especially in Ohio, and the association with Obama that Biden has will overwhelmingly help him in the states that we struggled with most in 2016. I am cautiously optimistic.
