Union leader: We back Bernie Sanders because he has 'petitioned for American workers'
Hes supported many of our labor actions, hes stood for many of the principles and policies we stand for and hes walked the walk, Scott Slawson, who is president of UE Local 506, told Hill.TV on Thursday.
Even outside of campaigns, hes been on picket lines and petitioned for American workers, so I think for a union standpoint, it was the right call, he added.
The comments come just weeks after UE, which represents some 35,000 members nationwide, endorsed Sanders at its national convention in Pittsburgh.
The endorsement marked a win for Sanders, who has long advocated for unions.

(58,785 posts)and often corrupt. They not uncommonly want actions that would hurt workers not in their unions. That too frequently sets up situations where unions may demand what should not be agreed to in return for endorsements. Honorable candidates who believe they could well win may thus be forced to refuse the union's terms.
That then can set up situation where trailing candidates not expected to win can pick up these rejected endorsements and be the means by which the unions punish the ones who refused them.
I haven't read about this particular case and have no reason to think this one possibility among a number is involved, but it is common enough that sophisticated people always wonder if unions are endorsing trailing instead of leading candidates for true ideological reasons, or others. Also, of course, Sanders is a senator, and the deal may merely have been in return for support in the senate.

(2,176 posts)seen your preferred candidate listed as Sanders, Warren, now Buttigieg. Maybe you should just try undecided, unless there is some other reason.

(42,862 posts)It's nice to know that someone cares enough to take such an interest in my previous choices. I'm not sure whether to be flattered, or to be skeeved-out.
All I'm trying to say is, in my opinion, that it's such an odd thing to be fixated on... but... to each their own, I suppose.

Indeed, in the political world, the term purity test is largely used by the establishment to chastise and attack the left.
For instance, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have refused to accept corporate donations for their presidential campaigns. Many outlets The Atlantic, Politico, The Hill described these pledges as a new Democratic purity test to establish progressive credentials.
Hillary Clinton scorned the idea, claiming that under [Sanders] definition, President Obama is not a progressive because he took donations from Wall Street! (Some might argue thats accurate, as Obama has described himself as a 1980s-style moderate Republican.)
