(39,346 posts)At least someone is standing up. And, yes, Im a Warren supporter, but how is it that she is the only one making Facebook lies a priority? Look at how much money Trump spends there; its his personal propaganda and misinformation playground.

(36,823 posts)Last week, Facebook quietly changed the language of its advertising policies to make it easier for politicians to lie in ads.
On Tuesday, the Trump campaign launched a new ad on Facebook, which includes a claim that was ruled false by Facebook-approved third-party fact-checkers. On the surface, such an ad appears to violate Facebook's rules against false content in ads. But Facebook quietly amended its policy on "misinformation" in advertising, allowing it to accept nearly any from a politician, including this new one from the Trump campaign.
In the last week, the Trump campaign has exponentially increased its Facebook spending, shelling out over $1.5 million for ads.
Trump's new video ad attacks rival Joe Biden. The ad (which you can watch here) states: "Joe Biden promised Ukraine $1 billion dollars if they fired the prosecutor investigating his son's company."
...
Facebook changes the rules
Prior to last week, Facebook had a rule against running any ads with "false and misleading" content: "Ads, landing pages, and business practices must not contain deceptive, false, or misleading content, including deceptive claims, offers, or methods."
But today, category 13 of prohibited content has been narrowed significantly. Now, Facebook only "prohibits ads that include claims debunked by third-party fact checkers or, in certain circumstances, claims debunked by organizations with particular expertise."
The old rules prohibited all ads that contained "false" and "misleading" content and made no mention of the fact-checking program. The new rules are limited to claims that are "debunked by third-party fact checkers."
Moreover, Facebook says "political figures" are exempt from even that narrow restriction.
It's open season.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed the company's challenges in two hours of leaked audio from internal meetings published in part by The Verge on Tuesday.
The audio from two July Q&A meetings with employees provides a glance into Zuckerberg's thoughts on key issues facing his company while not under the spotlight of press cameras or a congressional hearing. He also blasted Sen. Elizabeth Warren's plans to break up Big Tech companies if she becomes president.
The meetings took place after the Federal Trade Commission's $5 billion settlement with the company over privacy concerns, according to The Verge a deal that included a release from liability for executives from its previous consent decree and which ultimately sent Facebook shares up.
While Zuckerberg's answers at the employee Q&A meetings come off as more casual and sometimes jocular takes on his public remarks, the fact that two hours of internal dealings leaked to the press is significant. Over the past year and a half since the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook has had to do damage control, both inside and outside of the company. Current and former employees have previously expressed gripes with Facebook's culture, with some telling CNBC earlier this year that it's like a "cult."

(6,393 posts)It's like saying Twitter is all about people tweeting while they were on the toilet. Which is pretty much the first few months of the service in 2009 or whatever. But far from it since.
Do you have a better alternative people should be using?

(14,618 posts)Sure, people buy and sell, but there are dozens of sites you can do business on.
Look around.
But the real answer is to break sites like fb, Amazon, and Google into independent entities.
Look at wardens proposal; that will go a long way, and why they see her as an existential threat.
But short of that, just take progressive business elsewhere. Or don't you think 100 million real accounts going idle will get there attention?

(14,618 posts)Acknowledge they are valid reasons. It is laziness to a great extent.
Some people need to shop at Wal-Mart because they have no real choice.
I don't need to and don't.
Same with fb. I know what's there, but with a little effort I don't need it. I do have an account for work reasons, but won't use it for personal use.

I have NEVER ever seen any right-wing ads or otherwise for anything.
I have professional friends in the arts throughout the world. Groups where we discuss events, musical instrument design, performance practice, items for sale, repair... etc etc...
For me, it is absolutely priceless..

I still have my page, but I only post a few sunsets, a few selfies, some model pics often taken by my brother who loves photography, and a lot of anti-Trump stuff.
My significant other gave up FB a couple of years ago before I met her.
Oh well.

(3,145 posts)Who runs facebook?
How rich are they?
Who does Trump's tax policies favor?
Kind of a "Does 1=1=1=3?" level of difficulty as far as logic goes.
The basic fact is that the only people who have any say in what Facebook does are the people who own it. Newspapers have always been free to print any lies they wish, with only the exceptions of defamation of character or incitement to riot as limitations.
not defending anything, just amazed that anyone is at all surprised that a very very rich man would allow and/or facilitate another rich man (who wants to make the rich richer) do get away with everything possible.
