Anita Hill ready to hold Biden accountable

From CNN:
"I'm ready to move on, but I am also ready to hold Joe Biden accountable. Accountability means acknowledging your role in a problem and the harm it's caused. Acknowledging that you have culpability," Hill said.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Can I ask you something?

Would you think that leaving a well paid position to go work in a Republican administration is something you’d jump at the chance to do?

Do you think someone with the political and judicial views of Clarence Thomas just screams, “Yeah, I want to work for that guy!”?

Would you take an oath to Oral Roberts University?

If you answered “no”’ to any of those questions, then congratulations! You are not Anita Hill.

There is nothing he could or would say to address this individual's problem without it being analyzed to death and some fault found with it.

The entire political "public apology" ritual is a crock of shit. Every time. I do not recall a single apology ever issued by any politician in response to demands that was deemed sufficient to defuse a damned thing. It only serves to keep the controversy going.

Every. Single. Time.

And it doesn't matter who is outraged over what and demanding the apology. It is a certainty there is nothing that will be sufficient.

The fact of the matter is that the vote on Clarence Thomas - again, the Talibornagain with whom she had no political or philosophical quarrel in the first place - would not have swung one way or the other on the basis of additional witnesses. It was not a matter of the majority of the Senate not believing Hill. It was a matter of them frankly not giving a shit about it. Most of the senators who voted to confirm Thomas probably believed Hill was telling the truth.

How about this - if you are unhappy with it, then don't vote for Biden. If you aren't, then go ahead and vote for him. But Biden doesn't owe me, you, or anyone on this forum jack shit in relation to Anita Hill's resentment.

It wasn't you sitting up on the stand being cross examined by someone whom you might have expected to handle the situation fairly - so I see no reason why you should be so emotional.

The fact is, whether or not you, I, Biden, or anyone else thinks that having expert witnesses on the stand would have helped - witnesses who were ready and willing to testify - it would have been the smart thing to do. Based on pure politics. He didn't.

Why Biden decided not to do it, and why he went further than that and joined in with the republicans in grilling her, I'll never know.

What I do know is that unless he stops saying things like 'i wish I could have done more', this issue will definitely not go away. If he owns up to what he did, it would be enough for most. It wouldn't be enough for everyone, because some people are like that, but it would be finally accepted as an ACTUAL apology, and not the ersatz apologies he's offered up to now.

Like the other demanded apologies from politicians which are deemed "actual" instead of "ersatz" all of the time.

It won't accomplish jack, just as the now "expert" instead of "corroborating" witnesses that were suggested at the time. You can make up your mind on your own what type of witnesses were supposed to change the minds of the senators who TOLD Biden that it wasn't going to change their vote one way or the other.

his defensiveness seems to get in the way of trying to see it from her perspective. He has a way of taking things that are not about him personally.
Kamala Harris shared her experience to make a point about what she saw as a flawed approach to dealing with partisanship and it became all about Joe Biden. He could easily have taken a beat and made the case that from his end, he was in a tough spot doing the best he could in that political environment, while acknowledging that from the perspective of a person affected by the policy the view might be different from what he hoped or intended.

Rehashing something that occurred decades earlier serves no purpose. Anita Hill has been on other broadcasts earlier this year and had the opportunity to provide her point of view. It had no effect on the race and I doubt that anyone will be persuaded to change their votes because she decided to speak out again. To state it concisely, Anita Hill is yesterday's news.

Thu Oct 24, 2019, 06:09 PM

An apology is between two people. Anita Hill was not satisfied with Joe's apology earlier this year so I don't see where Biden should grovel to Anita Hill if she is going to be dissatisfied anyway. If anything, it makes Biden appear weak by doing so.

Unfortunately, in life I've found that some people are perpetually offended regardless as to whether a transgression was committed or the efforts of the person who allegedly made the offenses to empathize or correct the situation. Anita Hill has the right to harbor her grudges against Biden, but she shouldn't expect everyone else to be unforgiving about something that happened nearly three decades ago.

that I made decades ago. No matter how much I've shown my remorse or the number of times that I apologized, that person will continue to bring up those actions against me when we have disagreements. There comes a point that I had to accept that nothing I had to say would alleviate the situation. Finally, I remembered this prayer so that I didn't have to feel the burden of guilt:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

I believe that Biden has shown his remorse to Anita Hill, but he also knows that there isn't anything he can do that will change the situation or make Anita Hill feel better. There is where the last line of that prayer is relevant for Biden. I think that the rest of us should take some guidance from the last line since none of the posts in this thread are going to change anything.

She took the job to be near her family. Then she taught law at OU for a few years but spent the bulk of her career at Brandeis in NY.

One of the reasons she left Oklahoma was because after her testimony regarding Thomas the first order of business every year for the state legislature was to introduce a resolution demanding that OU fire her from the law faculty.

She left Oklahoma and her family to get away from the hate. I see it still follows her and your statement about a "generation of lawyers who fight against equal rights and choice" could not be more incorrect.

I’m sorry, but I do not need to know Anita Hill to be well acquainted with the mission and purpose of Oral Roberts University.

These places like Oral Roberts, Liberty, or Pat Robertson’s outfit have a definite agenda which they serve as institutions to advance.

I don’t give a shit what Hill’s personal views may be, because they are obviously not exclusive of serving to advance the cause of Oral Roberts U. They require an oath from their faculty. Do you know what it says? If not, I’d suggest you ask her.

She has helped spawn legions more Clarence Thomases.

And it hardly needs explanation that she had no issue with Clarence Thomas’ political views or judicial philosophy (such as it is). He has been a Christofascist from the get-go, and it is THAT Clarence Thomas for whom she left lucrative private practice to work - because she thought that highly of him and his addled mind.

Her issue was with his behavior, not his bizarre RW Christofascist ideology which is likewise consistent with Oral Roberts.

You can say “it was three years” all you like, but it is three years more than Joe Biden ever spent advancing that agenda.

Her only public service was to eagerly serve as that nutjob’s assistant in a Republican administration.

Look at some of the replies on here or any thread that dares to question Biden's past statements on any number of topics. Very, very few say anything like "maybe he should have responded in a different way" or "I hope he has learned from his past actions." Most are of the "boring" "meh" "I'm going to donate again" variety. Very little actual discussion of the substance of the criticisms.

Fri Oct 25, 2019, 11:10 AM

...that the majority of senators wouldn't change their vote on Thomas no matter what those witnesses had to say.

The issue with Hill was not a failure to persuade anyone she was being truthful. The issue was a failure of 2/3 of senators at the time to give a shit.

And corroborating witnesses wouldn't change that.

As a lawyer, and one who has been a very successful and prodigious accumulator of wealth and prestige in that profession, Hill is perfectly aware that sometimes you don't get what you want, even if you are right. It happens.

But there is utterly nothing that Joe Biden is going to say or could say which is going to change the facts or the history. If it is a disqualifier for you, then golly gosh don't vote for Biden. I'm not voting for him and I know him much better than most here at DU, having spent considerable time with him in a small group setting (which, yes, included several hours of discourse on supreme court nominations) and through a family history of various political activities in Delaware.

He's addressed this before. It was deemed insufficient, as the "politically demanded apology" always is deemed insufficient. I believe it would be stupid for Biden to do it again.

Isn't that what the repugs have been telling accusers of Kavanaugh, rump, etc.?

Here is what she said on that topic: "I'm ready to move on, but I am also ready to hold Joe Biden accountable. Accountability means acknowledging your role in a problem and the harm it's caused. Acknowledging that you have culpability," Hill said.

Who cares if you are over it. She obviously feels his apology was of the non-apology variety, i.e. sorry if you were offended. It's up to him to make it right. What we have is another example of Joe just not getting it.

You know, she specifically decided to work with Clarence Thomas.

28 years ago. Voters 40 and under were either too little to care (me) or not even close to being born. Apart from that, I don't remember Ms. Hill making a lot of noise during Biden's VP years.

I wonder why.

I saw the hearings live and Joe Biden is def not the reason Thomas is on the Supreme Court.

I do respect and admire Anita Hill. Biden did apologize but she decided not to accept it. That is her prerogative. But I am not sure anything Biden will do will get her to accept his apology.

I am undecided. My top three are a Warren, Biden, and Mayor Pete.

I understand Warren had a bad night at the last debate. It is what it is and she will do better the next time.

But OTT hyperbolic attacks on her rivals aren’t warranted. She’s a tough candidate and this stuff is not helping her.

Have a nice night.

159. Some people suck.

It's a simple fact, some people are just jerks who think of their candidate in a weird sports fan type fashion. I see it all over the internet but rarely run into it in person. Face to face amongst other Dems we're usually polite at meetups. No matter the fact we currently support various candidates.

I, personally, hate the way internet warriors rile people up for their own vengeance. It's says much about them and who they are at their core. It also can end up destroying their potential candidates chances. I never condone such actions. Some people are shallow and associate followers with the politician, which is silly. Yet, it happens.

Politics are not sports. In the end we're all more alike here than we are different and I despise people going tribal within the party. That's a recipe for defeat, no matter who does it or who they support (read: GE 2016) We can disagree like adults without carrying water for the Republicans.

Edit to add. I'm a Biden supporter empathizing with a Warren supporter. We're more alike than we are different.

That's what you got from my words? I was speaking about the unwarranted anger running about the internet and trying to express empathy to the poster while stating it's an issue mostly among anonymous posters but not as much in reality on the streets. I guess that nuance was missed.

Warren, Biden, and Buttigieg are on my shortlist.

I’m sure you remember threads here from two or three volatile Warren supporters that insinuating Biden is a serial molester, a pedophile, a racist, brain damaged, etc. IMHO they are detracting from Warren rather than supporting her in her run

Maybe I have missed the Buttigieg and Biden supporters personally attacking Warren’s character and going scorched earth in that way.

At any rate I would like all of us to treat the candidates w respect. Less flame-bait, more discussion. I expect you and I agree on that

180. Wrong on several points
Fri Oct 25, 2019, 04:11 PM
Oct 2019

First my post was not to help Warren but for people to think about voting for someone based on their record. Vetting candidates is something done on here and Warren has been the subject of daily attacks on this forum, including from some of those positing here that this topic doesn't matter.

Secondly, Biden DID NOT apologize. Hill says he didn't and I take her word. You would too if she was talking about a repub.

Third and this is the most ridiculous charge you make, is this post had NOTHING to to diwht Warren's debate performance (which some pundits rated highly) so that s just a lame attempt on your part to question my motives. There is nothing hyperbolic abut this post, it is just her explaining qhwn asked how she feels about it. She certainly knows more about the situation than you do.

Try and practice what you preach.

the well must be getting shallow, as we're now simply rebooting that which has been examined on DU both in-depth and consistently.

But I get it... sometimes we have to pull whatever chum from the bucket is left, throw it at the wall in hope it sticks, and inform anyone pointing this out how dismissive must be of Ms. Hill.

Again.

It isn't going to persuade anyone here to vote for or against Joe in the primaries, is it?

The only reason to discuss it here is because it WILL be raised as an issue in the GE if he's our nominee. And yes, if so he'll likely be running against mr 'grab em by the pussy' so it SHOULDN'T even matter. That said, most of us are not new to this game and we know how this works. Especially with the media the way it is.

For me this is an academic discussion. I have my opinion, others have theirs. But there is absolutely no need for some of the nasty stuff going on.

No matter what Anita's politics are, or what personal decisions she's made, none of that makes what happened to her any less wrong. And none of it justified the actions taken by Biden. Dragging her through the mud in the context of this discussion is vile and inexcusable, full stop.

It's bad enough we treat public servants like rock stars and pro-athletes. The fact that this election is something of an existential crisis gives stakes to what I would otherwise dismiss as irritating behavior.

People think if Candidate X doesn't win the primary, Trump will win. People think any criticism of Candidate X will result in their loss. It's as unfair as it is ridiculous, as simply supporting Candidate X in the general is not a sufficient display of loyalty. One must also appear to be enthusiastic about Candidate X. If Candidate X loses in the general, for whatever reason, everyone who supported Candidates Y and Z will be at fault because they criticized Candidate X in the primary.

I mean, if this the way we're going to do things, why have a primary at all?
