Politico on Double Standard: "You spent a f---ing week on pneumonia-gate"

While Fox News runs interference on recent reports that Trump had an unscheduled medical exams while pronouncing that he is in great health, and Bernie Sanders' campaign bragging about how his heart attack "motivated him even more" you have to wonder about the sexist double standard that women candidates are subjected to.

https://www.politico.com/newsletters/women-rule/2019/10/11/you-spent-a-f-ing-week-on-pneumonia-gate-487414

The news of Senator Bernie Sanders’ heart attack has made headlines, sure. But compared to the relentless media reports about Hillary Clinton’s near fainting-spell in 2016, brought on by pneumonia, the coverage of Sanders’ health problems has been light.

There are differences, of course. Clinton, who was 68 at the time, was the Democratic nominee. Sanders, 78, is still in the primary. But some people also suspect there’s a sexist double standard at work: Veterans of the Clinton campaign have been exchanging text messages this week, wryly reminiscing about how much attention the pneumonia incident got back in 2016, fueled by speculation, especially in conservative media, that Clinton was hiding larger health problems. (Sanders waited three days to disclose that he’d had a heart attack.)

“Press secretary Brian Fallon and I spent eight full days on pneumonia-gate … It was one of the hardest weeks of the entire campaign, just trying to dig out from it,” recalls Jennifer Palmieri, who was director of communications for the Clinton 2016 presidential campaign. “I just want to be like, ‘Hey, national media, you spent a f---ing week on pneumonia gate two months before America elected Donald Trump president of the United States. OK? That’s what you did.’”

“I did hear from a lot of reporters who texted me just to be like, ‘Why isn’t Bernie’s heart attack a bigger deal?’” Palmieri told me. “I’m like ‘I don’t know, you’re, like, in the press, you should be making it a big deal.’”

"...Veterans of the Clinton campaign have been exchanging text messages this week..."

...why are we still beating a dead horse when Bernie is the candidate corporate media truly maligns or ignores?

...watch, after Bernie becomes the nominee if cooperate media doesn't suddenly rediscover trump (if he's around)...oh, he's not so bad, he's just misunderstood, now's not the time to be switching horses midstream, better the devil know with endless trump lies and interviews, etc....

...yes, Hillary got a raw deal, but why not leave it at that and not lump Bernie in unfairly with the likes of trump or regurgitate old news...

Yes, we can over do the sexist double standard stuff, it wasn't all about that, but give me an ever loving break. Trump gets rushed to the hospital unexpectedly and we are told a ridiculous tall tale and the media is crickets. Sanders has a heart attack, doesn't tell the press for 3 days and crickets. Hillary looks wobbly at an appearance where she had pnemona and it was wall to wall coverage for 8 days. Oh, and remember the list of reporters and editors who harassed women that circulated, nearly all still have their jobs. Wanna bet if a list of anti Semetic reporters and editors circulated every person on the list would be fired end of business that day.

the type of faces we see in the history books, on Mt Rushmore, on our currency, etc - faces that are synonymous with leadership, authority, gravitas.

So it is simply assumed such individuals are capable of the job, whereas with PoC and women the assumption is the opposite - and it is through this lens which media coverage is filtered.

So when it comes to health and aging - Trump/Biden/Sanders are portrayed as spunky and spry, and Hillary was portrayed as feeble, dying, etc.

play up the Basket of Deplorables comment.

In actual fact, the Basket of Deplorables was turned into much bigger moment after the election was over than it ever was during the election.

The best evidence from that chapter tells us that "Basket of Deplorables" did not significantly affect the election, while pneumonia-gate had a major effect on the state of the race. It is to Hillary's credit, as a candidate, that she was able to run a good enough campaign to offset that challenge, and she was in line for a decisive victory of Trump.

And then, of course, James Comey intervened. At the end of the day, it was Comey's election from start to finish.

I’m plus sized and I know I’m at a higher risk for certain conditions. You won’t here me out there claiming to be the healthiest person alive. If I remember right, this happened at the 911 ceremony. I can only imagine the response if she'd begged off going pleading illness. People still would've been expressing "concern" about her health or would've accused her of faking it and not caring about the 911 victims. She just can't win.
