It's not unlike 2004, when John Kerry surged to a surprise win in the state as Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt did battle.

As Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg do battle ahead of the Iowa caucus, Joe Bidens campaign is relishing the show.
Its a familiar scenario to longtime Iowa watchers: two leading rivals going at it, creating an opening for a come-from-behind win in Iowa by the establishment candidate. In 2004, the last time Democrats sought to unseat a Republican incumbent, a nasty feud between Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt allowed John Kerry to surge to a surprise win in the state.
Now, Joe Biden hopes to repeat the feat, having just won the endorsement of his former Senate colleague, who joined him on the trail in Iowa last week.
A big question now is, can Warren and Buttigieg avoid the Dean-Gephardt murder suicide pact? said Steve Elmendorf, who advised Gephardt in 2004.
Theres always a risk in any campaign, when two candidates go after each other and go after each other hard, it lets a third or fourth candidate rise because voters get sick of the attacks, added Elmendorf, who favors Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind. In 2004, it was a big back and forth between Dean and Gephardt, and Kerry rose from behind and just ran up the middle and surprised everyone.

(10,500 posts)First, we are two months from the caucuses, whereas the Gephardt-Dean feud erupted in full-force right before the caucuses.
Second, as of now the Buttigieg-Warren feud has not gotten as bitter or damaging for either candidate as the Gephardt-Dean feud was for both candidates.

(1,086 posts)of course fed from the Biden campaign. Which of course make sense because in reality they are scared about it happening now.
The most likely beneficiaries of a real Buttigieg/Warren throw down are Sanders and Klobuchar. That is the last thing the Biden campaign wants.
Even if it is only one poll the fact that Klobuchar is in double digits and on the rise is a direct threat to Biden as she is absolutely a viable alternative to his supporters and Bernie overtaking him in Iowa would really put the fox in the henhouse.

(1,086 posts)part is of course coming from the Biden campaign.
They are just doing their job and trying to get a pre-spin on the story. I have no problem with that.
The superficial part was that the reporters didn't think at all.
