CNN's Andrew Gillum Cautions Against Comparing US Elections to UK: Boris Avoided Trump 'Like the Pla

CNN commentator Andrew Gillum told Michael Smerconish he would caution against drawing comparisons between the 2020 election and Boris Johnson’s recent victory across the pond.

“Do you think too much is being made of the application of the Johnson’s victory and what it may mean for Trump?” Smerconish asked Gillum on his eponymous program Smerconish Saturday morning.

“Boris Johnson avoided Trump like the plague just recently during Trump’s visit to Europe, wouldn’t even take public visits with him. He was also seen among a group of foreign leaders literally laughing at the president,” Gillum responded. “Donald Trump remained for him a scourge in Britain just as he does for about half the country here in the United States. So I think we ought to be cautious how much we sort of compare the two of these and use this as a prelude to what would happen in November.”

1. It's also hard to compare when you look at the numbers

In 2017 Corbyn's Labour had a swing of +9.6% which was the party's best swing increase since 1945 and then just two years later a swing of -7.8%.

Boris Johnson only increased the Tory vote percentage by 1% from Theresa May. So who actually took votes away from Labour?

The Brexit Party.

Lifelong Labour voters who just want Brexit done but could never vote Tory had a new protest party to cast a ballot for. The Brexit Party gained no seats but they caused lots of damage.

Corbyn was a feckless leader but he was the same man who oversaw a Labour improvement in 2017. In 2019 Brexit punished Labour.

Labour couldn't get their act together over Brexit and backed neither leave nor remain, but some amorphous re-vote. Plus, they're led by one of the most unpopular Labour leaders since the 70's. Then there's the whole anti-Semitic thing. This was never about left or right policies. Labour policies poll very well. This was about a party with limited vision, no focus and no good sense. What will be interesting is how Labour reacts to Scotland leaving and an economy ravaged by Brexit.

3. The Centrist Liberal Democrats captured only 11 seats in a 651 member Parliament

Received just 11%of the vote and their leader , Jo Swinson , was booted out of Parliament ... Were the British souring on Centrism ? No …. The British People voted Conservative because Johnson shrewdly and repeatedly promised resolution of the Brexit Issue once and for all …………….They were sick of the debate ..They did want any more referendums ... They wanted to move on …..If you watch British News , you can sympathize with this prevailing mood …..

Tiring of all the hot takes. Thanks for posting Gillum’s skepticism about these comparisons.

Andrew Gillum's comment has nothing to do with the colossal loss by the UK socialist leading the labour party.

His comment was for "Democrats" to not be discouraged and that it doesn't mean Trump will win against a moderate Democrat.

There is no doubt that if Bernie or Sen. Warren were to get the nomination, we will lose between 40-45 states.

7. Labour thought young people were going to flood the polls
Sun Dec 15, 2019, 12:48 AM
Dec 2019

I hear this a lot from Bernie and Warren supporters. That there's this magical non-voter that will flood the polls because they were "inspired" to vote. Well it didn't work out for Labour even though Boris is a baffoon. We need to be careful into believing that somehow people that have never voted a day in their life will somehow come to poll just cause Bernie or Warren is the nominee. This is a fools errand and how you end up losing 40 states. Our nominee needs to have a message that appeals to broad swath of Americans.

You think Warren wouldn’t have had a plan to reverse Brexit like that idiot Corbyn who couldn’t even establish a position on it?

You think young voters here registering by the millions because of their concerns about the damage Trump is inflicting are just faking interest?

At least with Biden, he's a known quantity and people have made up their minds that they like the guy. Warren is unknown to most people at large and Trump will fill in the blanks for sure.

11. The UK Conservative party has policies considered liberal in the US
Sun Dec 15, 2019, 05:53 PM
Dec 2019

The National Health Service was a Conservative Party proposal, under Churchill. Today they say they oppose privatization of any part of it. Margaret Thatcher, formerly a real scientist, stressed how important it is to counter global warming. The Conservative party has not proposed reduction of the top marginal tax rate of 45%. I am not sure they are all that different from the Democratic Party of Obama.
