Presidential hopeful Andrew Yang's health care plan breaks with both the Medicare for All bill endorsed by his progressive rivals and a public option favored by more moderate candidates.
Yang proposes six reforms to the current system he calls a more productive approach to lowering health care costs for people who are struggling, billing his plan as a new way forward for health care in America.
Health care has not been one of Yangs signature issues the businessman-turned-candidate has focused largely on the threat of automation and the promise of a universal basic income. And, like many other Democrats in the race, his position on health policy has shifted. The outsider candidate originally voiced support for Medicare for All and ran ads in favor of it before scrubbing any mention of the plan from his website and arguing that people should be able to keep their private insurance if they choose.
I support the spirit of Medicare for All, Yang said in rolling out his new plan on Dec. 16, adding that he feels eliminating private insurance for millions of Americans is not a realistic strategy.
