Warren slammed Buttigieg for fundraiser in wine cave with a crystal chandelier. In 2018, she

was helped by a fundraiser at a steakhouse with crystal chandeliers, where the cheesesteak is $120.

NY Times article mentioning the fundraiser and menu:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/09/us/politics/elizabeth-warren-2020.html

Mr. Rendell said he had recruited donors to attend an intimate fund-raising dinner for Ms. Warren last year at Barclay Prime, a Philadelphia steakhouse where the famed cheesesteak goes for $120. (The dish includes Wagyu rib-eye, foie gras, truffled cheese whiz and a half-bottle of champagne.) He said he received a “glowing thank-you letter” from Ms. Warren afterward.

More on Barclay Prime here, mentioning the crystal chandeliers:

https://www.phillyvoice.com/barclay-prime-philadelphia-top-steakhouse-united-states/

Anyway, this is why Buttigieg was bringing up purity tests, and Warren's ignoring her own past fundraising.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

For every attack, there will be a counter-attack, as no one is perfect. It can end up being a vicious cycle where no one wins, but they will look petty and mean, not very presidential. Save the attack dog for Trump. Meanwhile, if one becomes the nominee, the other will have to walk back their accusations, not a very becoming sight.

11. The Warren-Buttigieg wine cave controversy, explained
Fri Dec 20, 2019, 01:36 AM
Dec 2019
The biggest on-stage fight of Thursday’s Democratic debate, between Sen. Elizabeth Warren and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg — indeed, one of the biggest fights we’ve seen come out of any of the debates — was about wine caves.

Or rather, it was a fight about high-dollar fundraisers, political access, and who gets to have it.

“Billionaires in wine caves should not pick the next president of the United States,” Warren responded.

I'm sure they won't be.. that's what the Primaries are FOR.

So, the mayor just recently had a fundraiser that was held in a wine cave, full of crystals, and served $900-a-bottle wine. Think about who comes to that. He had promised that every fundraiser he would do would be open-door, but this one was closed-door. We made the decision many years ago that rich people in smoke-filled rooms would not pick the next president of the United States.

Buttigieg responded by arguing that he’s not going to turn down money from wealthier donors, and that high-dollar fundraisers would be an essential part of beating President Donald Trump in the general election. He also brought up Warren’s personal wealth, and later, her past closed-door fundraisers as a Senate candidate:

fundraisers were what Warren now derides as "swanky" and she was quite happy to fundraise at swanky venues through last year, until she moved millions raised that way for her senate campaign over to her presidential campaign, giving herself a fundraising head start, and then insisted that her rivals swear off that sort of fundraiser.

Buttigieg was right to point this out.

Sun Dec 22, 2019, 11:33 PM

etc., and in each case the price per serving is about $50. Which is no more expensive than Barclay Prime, whose porterhouse for two is over $100. And Barclay Prime's Wagyu ribeye, half the size of that porterhouse so it would be steak for one, is $195.

Mon Dec 23, 2019, 02:51 PM

allocate about a pound of steak per person with the porterhouse.

Btw, I saw a couple of recent reviews listing a price of $110 or $115 for the steak for two.

Again, the prices are very similar to Barclay Prime. If the $110 or $115 price for steak for 2 now is correct, they're several dollars higher for the porterhouse, but that's a negligible difference.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to claim that Barclay Prime is the very most expensive steakhouse in the country. Only that it is very expensive, more expensive than most steakhouses.

I don’t see how candidates sniping at each other over this sort of thing helps at all. You have to fundraise in order to compete. Must every candidate eat gruel, wear sackcloth and go unshod to be “authentic”? Much of the time, we’re our own worst enemy with this need to appear pristine.

Fri Dec 20, 2019, 11:49 AM
Dec 2019

The 12-ounce filet mignon is $58 at The Palm and $62 at Barclay Prime.

The Palm has a NY strip, 14 ounce, for $53, 18 ounce for $59.

Barclay Prime has a 16 ounce NY strip for $54 and a 20 ounce for $63.

Tne most expensive steak at The Palm is a 36 ounce NY strip for $104.50, which the menu points out is intended for two.

The most expensive steaks at Barclay Prime are a 32 ounce Porterhouse for $105, and then the Wagyu beef selections, which are $84 for an 8 ounce filet mignon, $140 for a 10 ounce NY strip, and $195 for an 18 ounce ribeye.

Try again to prove that site for Warren's fundraiser wasn't "even close to a really expensive steakhouse."

47. I think Buttigieg's assessment is right.
Fri Dec 20, 2019, 05:16 AM
Dec 2019

Buttigieg effectively said it is foolhardy not to accept help from a fundraiser from wealthy donors who want to join the fight.

"In response, Buttigieg pointed out that he is personally less wealthy than the other candidates on stage, including Warren. “I am literally the only person on this stage who’s not a millionaire or a billionaire,” he said, citing a Forbes analysis. He then shot back by warning that Democrats could lose to Trump if they declined to accept help from those who are willing to join in the fight. Warren herself, Buttigieg noted, held closed-door fundraisers when she campaigned for the Senate and transferred some of that money from her 2018 Senate account to support her 2020 presidential bid."

Hard to say that is something she used to do. Not that I care. I would probably be voting for her if she didn’t say she was going to limit the scope of her fundraising.

Sanders is currently doing this. Wasn’t long ago he met a group of multimillionaires at a restaurant where there were items on the menu for $190.

I seriously doubt those in the wine cave were billionaires anyway, but even if they were... good!

Give me your billionaires, and millionaires and all your airs. I want all the money for Democrats.

Money only corrupts the corruptible. None of our top candidates are in that category.

I hate the bogus purity contests that have already brought us so much grief.

I wish she never would have gone down this Sanders road..

Cory Booker didn't like Warren's "wine cave" attack on Buttigieg

Therein lies the risk that Booker identifies for the Democrats, that not only is very little gained from this line of attack, it also might embitter voters toward other candidates who fail the test. And as Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders demonstrated Thursday night, that risk extends to Warren.

Seconds after Warren and Pete finished up, Sanders swooped in to boast that he is “the only candidate up here that doesn’t have any billionaire contributions,” which includes Warren. Her current presidential campaign, not her old pre-pledge Senate campaign, has accepted donations at or near the $2800 individual contribution limit from at least six billionaires.
