Why the Bernie Sanders camp deserves better media Coverage

Compare all of this to the coverage that Sanders usually gets. Just last month, The New York Times ran the headline, “One Year From Election, Trump Trails Biden but Leads Warren in Battlegrounds,” omitting Sanders entirely, despite the fact that polling showed he was beating Donald Trump in three battleground states. An analysis of MSNBC’s coverage of the Democratic primary by In These Times found that over two months, Sanders received the least total coverage as well as the most negative (Warren was nearly as undercovered as Sanders, but received the highest proportion of positive mentions). A Politico analysis in November found that Joe Biden got three times the cable media coverage than Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. This is all despite the fact that Sanders has consistently polled near the top of the pack.

Sanders, a staunch democratic socialist for his entire career, and, at times, prickly interviewee, has long battled mainstream media for serious treatment. During the 2016 election, Margaret Sullivan, then-public editor of The New York Times wrote that while the Times had not ignored Sanders’s campaign, “it hasn’t always taken it very seriously. The tone of some stories is regrettably dismissive, even mocking at times.” And more is at stake than just hurt feelings; such treatment comes with material consequences. As Zeeshan Aleem pointed out recently at Vice, the “perception of unelectability has a self-fulfilling nature to it—if journalists think a candidate is far-fetched and dismiss them, then the public is more likely to swing that way as well."

Bernie's campaign has railed against the media and even called for the boycott of MSNBC. I've also seen some Sanders supporters attack journalist when they didn't like the coverage. Maybe they just think it's easier to not mention him at all. I'm not saying this justifies it in anyway.

It's inevitable Bernie is going to win the nomination, so how the corporate media chooses to cover Bernie, in an attempt to protect corporate interests, doesn't really matter. With Bernie's leadership, We The People see through the corporate agenda to keep the working class down... economic justice is coming, whether they like it or not.

Bernie is more (what I would call a) Democrat than Joe.

Having Joe represent West Virginia is fine with me, and caucus with Democrats.

It's kinda complicated.

Fighting for the poor people and Regular Americans since the '60's instead of helping the folks that OWN THE MEDIA means you won't get real good media coverage.....

27. I would love to see the media vet sanders
Thu Dec 26, 2019, 02:18 PM
Dec 2019

No one took sanders seriously last cycle and so he was not vetted. Vetting is important I would love to see the media cover sanders and vet him https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/01/28/why-bernie-sanders-has-an-uphill-climb-ahead/?utm_term=.1b4f90c2a717

Finally, what happens when the oppo dump on Sanders comes? We have no idea, because it never happened in 2016. Clinton was so terrified of alienating his supporters and seeing them vote for Jill Stein in the general election (or not vote at all) that she tiptoed around him for pretty much the entirety of the primary campaign. That doesn’t mean that he’ll be destroyed when stories about the more colorful aspects of his history start cropping up, but there’s just no way to know.

Which is what we could say about the Sanders candidacy as a whole: There’s no way to know how it’s going to go. But he’s got his work cut out for him.

See also https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/19/politics/bernie-sanders-2020-campaign-donald-trump/index.html?utm_source=twCNNp&utm_content=2019-02-20T14%3A52%3A07&utm_term=image&utm_medium=social%C2%A0

2. How will he withstand more scrutiny and more attacks?
One of the secrets to Sanders' success in 2016 was that no one -- most especially Clinton -- thought he had any chance of going anywhere in the race. Clinton largely ignored him for the better part of 2015, allowing some problematic parts of Sanders' record for Democrats -- most notably his voting record on guns -- to go unnoticed. (When the race began to tighten, Clinton gently prodded Sanders on guns and health care.) Sanders, too, largely flew under the radar of investigative reporters for major news outlets who were busy looking into Clinton, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and others seen as more viable candidates. (That reality clearly benefited Donald Trump in the early days of the campaign, as well.)

Sanders will get no pass -- from either the media or his fellow candidates -- this time around. He is among the frontrunners -- and will be treated as such. His wife's time as president of Burlington College could well come up. And his opponents will do a deep dive into his nearly 30 years of votes as a member of the House and Senate. This is all very normal stuff in a campaign. But not for Sanders.

There is a ton of strong opposition research out there that will come out this cycle

26. Does sanders supporters really want the media to vet sanders?
Thu Dec 26, 2019, 02:15 PM
Dec 2019

If the media starts covering sanders, then the media will also start vetting sanders which will be fun

While Sanders’ supporters complain relentlessly that he has received less attention from the media than other candidates, he has also avoided sustained criticism that some of his rivals have suffered. That could be helping him, especially compared with Warren, who has recently come under fire from the left and center for her health care plan.

“If you really think about it, Bernie hasn’t been hit a lot with anything. It’s not like he’s getting hit by other campaigns,” said Michael Ceraso, a former New Hampshire director for Pete Buttigieg’s campaign who worked for Sanders in 2016. ….

If Sanders’ candidacy continues to be taken seriously, he will eventually be subjected to the scrutiny that Warren and Biden have faced for prolonged stretches. That includes an examination of his electability. “That conversation has never worked well for anyone,” Pfeiffer said

There is so much oppo that is out there on sanders that trump would win 45+ states by merely playing the video clips of sanders praising Cuba, socialism, and Central American regimes on a loop.
