Indictment: Russians also tried to help Bernie Sanders, Jill Stein presidential campaigns

MICHAEL COLLINS | USA TODAY | 1:13 pm EST February 17, 2018

WASHINGTON – It turns out Donald Trump wasn’t the only candidate the Russians allegedly tried to help during the 2016 presidential campaign.

A 37-page indictment resulting from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation shows that Russian nationals and businesses also worked to boost the campaigns of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Green party nominee Jill Stein in an effort to damage Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The Russians “engaged in operations primarily intended to communicate derogatory information about Hillary Clinton, to denigrate other candidates such as Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, and to support Bernie Sanders and then-candidate Donald Trump,” according to the indictment, which was issued Friday.

The document, which spells out in detail how the Russians worked to support Trump’s campaign, alleges that on or about Feb. 10, 2016, the Russians internally circulated an outline of themes for future content to be posted on social media accounts.

“Specialists were instructed to post content that focused on ‘politics in the USA’ and to ‘use any opportunity to criticize Hillary and the rest (except Sanders and Trump – we support them),’” the indictment said.

He probably hardly knew they were trying to help him. Fact is, Putin wanted to do anything he could to punish Hillary in his personal vendetta against her.

trolls, has been twisted to be a bad thing? She wasn't worried about a few Russian bots and probably most candidates wouldn't have been. Lets face it, Russians do this every election and in the past it didn't make a difference because the candidates won by too many votes for the Russians to swing it one way or another. She chose not to do anything about it. Sanders, who's campaign TOLD her about it now gets a bad wrap for being helpful, only because Sanders said Hillary should have taken what the Russians were doing seriously. Is this seriously something anyone is really upset about? Sorry, not buying it. Made up and misplaced rage.

Question: "But why didn't you go to your supporters, why not take that public?"

Bernie: "Well, we knew what we did know. But ... you know ... somebody ... Look, in the midst of all of this I was out campaigning very hard for Hillary Clinton. I don't ... Let me leave it at that."

Q: "Why leave it at that? It was a specific question about why didn't you go to your supporters."

B: "Because we did not know earlier."

...

Q: "If you and your campaign knew that there was Russian meddling trying to sow division, why not take that to supporters, many of whom hung on your every word, as you know?"

B: "I would say, the real question that should be asked was what the Clinton campaign, they had more information about that than we did and at this point we were working with them [wrong]."

Q: "So did the Clinton campaign say 'don't talk about this'?"

B: "No, of course not. But who do you think would be raising that issue?"

Q: "Well, I can see a world in which Mrs. Clinton said, 'It's the Russians!' and Sanders supporters say 'Oh, that's baloney.' But if Sanders says it, they say, 'okay.'"

B: "We knew what we knew when we knew it, and that's about all I can say."

E.g., putin supported Obama in 2008 in a primary against Clinton and then in the general as he viciously hated mccain, probably even more than Hillary. Putin then was very anti-Romney in 2012 due to romney’s categorical stance against russia named as no.1 geopolotocal foe. Of course, after Magnitsky and Crimea, putin turned on Obama big time, although it seems that he attributed a lot of foreign policy influence to Clinton as SoS. We have to remember that historically GOP had been far more anti-putin than dems. How fast things can change. Also, Russia was strongly against the Iraq war for geopolitical reasons.

We can blame russia to no end here for all our problems but we let this happen to ourselves. putin is not gonna change, we have to work on our cybersecurity, regulations, voting, etc. No one is going to help us.

they knew the bernie bros were coming from russia and ukraine.
i can grant that they didnt know what to do about that then, or how serious it was, but they did aid him, and he did abet them.
and still hasnt said word one about any of it.

this is why bernie was a hard no from me on day one.
i have no idea why the media has not asked him a single question about this.
