Poll: GOP voters drawn to Biden more than other 2020 Democrats

Republican voters are more drawn to former Vice President Joe Biden than to the rest of the candidates in the crowded Democratic presidential primary field, according to a new nationwide survey.

The Hill-HarrisX poll released Monday shows that 33 percent of GOP respondents named Biden as the Democratic candidate who came the closest to sharing their political views.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg received the second-highest support among Republican voters at 30 percent and 28 percent thought Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) better aligned with their views.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg both garnered 26 percent of respondents who said the candidates closely shared their values.

Biden, the front-runner in most national polls, has long sought to position himself as the most electable challenger to President Trump.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

6. Yeah, how is that a net positive? For every deplorable RethugliKKKon that would vote for Joe

based on whatever Joe campaigns on that would attract them, one has to ask what is the potential negative effect on votes from the party's base. That would seem a worthwhile discussion.

you steal is worth 2 Clinton voter you might lose.

If there were 10 Trump voters and 10 Clinton voters, and candidate X convinced two of the Trump voters to cross over and doing so caused 3 of the Clinton voters to leave you end up with....

Trump: 8
Candidate X: 9

Other: 3

So, yeah....

Assuming that the most progressive voters are likely to live in very blue states and the moderate Trump voters who would switch are likely to live in swing states......It's an ever greater swing.

Besides that, Biden isn't even doing anything to attract them. He just looks like the most moderate candidate when comparing him to Trump and Sanders.

40. It is a grave error to think this translates into votes

Nothing in this poll suggests Biden is uniquely positioned to flip votes to D from R. The poll question is this (asked for each leading candidate separately):

... how closely do they align with your personal political views?

Choices are very closely, somewhat closely, not very closely or not closely at all. The 33% figure for Biden is the combination of the first two categories among self-identified Republicans. The lowest any Democrat listed got was Warren and Buttigieg's 26%, which isn't all that much lower (Sanders was 28%, Bloomberg 30%) in a poll listing a 3.1% margin of error.

Bear in mind that the poll offers respondents three options for party affiliation - R, D and Independent. What this result says is this: among the group most likely to vote for Trump, slightly more claim their views align with Biden than with other candidates. Reality check: those people are voting for Trump in 2020, period. The poll did not ask whether they'd consider voting for a Democrat, and in a world where Trump's approval rating is still north of 40%, these are the people who simply will not vote for us.

Turn out the Democrats and the sane independents. We win by bringing record numbers of voters to the polls, not by "persuading" people who still imagine Trump is a fit president. Those people are beyond persuasion.

of left of center, would come closer to a Republican’s sense of her or his political viewpoint. Pelosi would come closer than Sanders, Warren, AOC etc. if the question were “who comes closest, among these four Democrats.

Would answering that Pelosi comes the most close suggest she is Republican in her political positions?

54. Let's be clear,

there is a rich Left tradition amongst Democrats - Warren treasures it and so does Nancy Pelosi - whatever individual policy differences they may have. Would Speaker Pelosi back M4A, if she thought she could get it through the Senate - yes - as quickly as Ted Kennedy would have. Their differences are matters of strategy, not ideology, and Pelosi is the best strategist there is.

Biden is a different kettle of fish. When he ran in 2008, he made it clear he was philosophically opposed to mandates - that was Obama's position at the time as well.

AOC's DSA, and Sanders Socialism do not fit within the Democratic Party. I know their policy positions - but the rationale of the former - class warfare - is quite different.

Warren's issue is corruption - breaking the stranglehold of money, not just on campaign financing, but on the political process. This is mainstream Dem, and has appeal across idealogical divides

"We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob ... The American people know from a four-year record that today there is only one entrance to the White House—by the front door. Since March 4, 1933, there has been only one pass-key to the White House. I have carried that key in my pocket. It is there tonight. So long as I am President, it will remain in my pocket. Those who used to have pass-keys are not happy. Some of them are desperate." FDR

And they are desperate to keep Warren out. With his long experience in Congress, Biden is more far comfortable dealing with lobbyists and donors to get legislation through. His donors call their donors etc etc.

Sorry for this long diatribe ... I've gone off course. When I see AOC Sanders and Warren bracketed together I see .... Red.

56. I did not bracket them together as being all alike in the degree to which they are left leaning,

ideological, or share an ideology, but simply to illustrate that Republicans’ answer to that question, does not tell us what democratic primary contender is most like a Republican. None of our candidates hold positions similar to, allied with, friendly to or in the interests of Republicans.

Your implication that Biden is like a Republican speaks to the spin you want to put on the results.

Biden is a life-long liberal. Period.

However, he has universal appeal across a wider range of the political spectrum and among a more widely diverse demographic than many widely known democrats. He may appeal more to moderate liberal leaning independents and disenchanted Republicans than other candidates.

You are trying to make a case where you can’t and then waxing offended at a case I wasn’t trying to make in throwing some more left leaning political figures together.

60. The socalled progressives that voted for Trump in 2016 more than offset

sane republicans who couldn't stand the guy. Those republicans are now independents who likely voted for congressional democrats in 2018 as they watched their party become even more extreme.

What we need in 2020 is when a candidate in the democratic primary doesn't win the nomination, that person vocally support the presumptive democratic nominee. We didn't get that on 2016 and that has severely damaged the nation and the world.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
