Democratic insiders: Bernie could win the nomination

His resiliency in the primary has caught the attention of the party establishment.

Politico

By HOLLY OTTERBEIN and DAVID SIDERS

12/26/2019 05:04 AM EST

Suddenly, Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign is being taken seriously.

For months, the Vermont senator was written off by Democratic Party insiders as a candidate with a committed but narrow base who was too far left to win the primary. Elizabeth Warren had skyrocketed in the polls and seemed to be leaving him behind in the race to be progressive voters’ standard-bearer in 2020.

But in the past few weeks, something has changed. In private conversations and on social media, Democratic officials, political operatives and pundits are reconsidering Sanders’ chances.

“It may have been inevitable that eventually you would have two candidates representing each side of the ideological divide in the party. A lot of smart people I’ve talked to lately think there’s a very good chance those two end up being Biden and Sanders,” said David Brock, a longtime Hillary Clinton ally who founded a pro-Clinton super PAC in the 2016 campaign. “They’ve both proven to be very resilient.”

Imo, you need to look up and remind yourself of the goal: Taking control of government away from the Republicans so Democrats can do all the things you want.

Like Sanders all you want, just don't get so invested in one person. He's NOT the goal.

I do believe Bernie stands a chance -- both to take the nomination and the GE. He certainly has a strong base of loyal support and speaks to the common people better and more effectively than just about anyone else. It's his consistency, authenticity and persistence -- not just the message. He has moved the entire party in the past 5 years toward his end of the spectrum, not because of his views, but because of a massive and an ever growing number of peoples' views.

Frankly, the "establishment" exists in any large organization and always seeks to sustain itself, to survive, to maintain its control. Sanders has challenged that within the Democratic Party. He has done what literally millions hoped someone would eventually do. It's actually refreshing that some within the party establishment actually recognizes this as well as his resilience. It means progress and hope.

wars have been conspicuously different from Democratic Party leadership throughout his career. “Establishment” isn’t a date or defined simply by longevity. Centrist philosophy has never been part of Sanders’ policy positions, to some extent if not principally because it’s a misnomer and a euphemism by effect.

These facts generated enough buzz that CNN ran a 2-minute piece on it during Inside Politics.
