Joe Biden is the only Democrat who presents serious competition to President Donald Trump in Florida, according to a poll released Tuesday.
The Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy survey of registered Florida voters showed Biden with a narrow 47-45 lead over the president, within the 4 percentage-point margin of error.
Biden was the only candidate from either political party with a positive approval rating in the crucial battleground state. Forty-five percent of respondents had a favorable view of the former vice president; 41 percent had a negative view.
Trump had a 46 percent approval rating. Forty-seven percent of respondents disapproved of the presidents job performance, the poll found.
Among registered voters surveyed, Trump easily bested Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren 51-42 and held comfortable leads over Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont (49-44) and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg (49-45).
Sanders was the least popular candidate among those surveyed. Just 35 percent of registered voters said they had a favorable opinion of him, while 52 percent had a negative opinion. Warren was also viewed unfavorably (37-48), as was Buttigieg (32-38).
Pollsters conducted interviews with 625 registered voters in the state between Dec. 11-16.

(180 posts)I'm not sure how either would win that state against Trump in 2020.

Florida is worth 29 EVs and we came within 1.5% of winning it in 2016. It's part of the clearest path to victory in 2020. Sure, you can win without it, but it gets a lot harder if you don't get it.

(68,552 posts)attention to Minnesota and Virginia too...could lose those states...I would of course put the most money in the most important states...but it was Obama's 50 state strategy or Dean's if you will that gave us Virginia in 08. What if we had written of VA?

(673 posts)I wouldn't expect that, VA has been creeping bluer for a while. The southwestern part of the state is getting older and smaller while NOVA is growing and getting younger. I can't envision a situation where VA goes red and Democrats win. I would think republicans would have to be winning by 5 points nationally for VA to go their way.
Actually I consider 2016 to be a low water mark for us. I wouldn't expect the 2020 democrat to underperform Clinton in any of these states.

(180 posts)PLUS in Florida. With Bernie and Warren, it'd take an inside straight to win. Piling up votes in L.A., S.F., Seattle, and NYC won't win the presidential election.
