Attacking the messenger, in fact, reinforces it. Because doing so doesn't persuade anyone other than people already strongly on their side.
The art of successful politics is persuasion.

(34,207 posts)Bernie Sanders is often criticized for "pie-in-the-sky" proposals and impractical ideals, but his campaign argues the Vermont senator actually gets things done.
"Bernie Sanders passed more roll call amendments in a Republican Congress than any other member," according to a TV ad paid for by the Sanders campaign.
A version of this ad appears on Sanders YouTube channel, and Sanders has made this claim on Twitter and Facebook as well so we wondered if it was true.
The Sanders campaign didnt get back to us, but we found that this carefully worded statement is accurate for his earlier years in Congress.

(498 posts)A "roll-call" amendment is just one type of amendment, usually one that adds some very small non-controversial item to a bill.
When you compare all amendments however, you find that Sanders is, to be generous, mediocre. Over his 25 years in Congress, Sanders has offered 90 successful amendments (21 by roll call votes, the leader). While the other senator from Vermont, Democrat Patrick Leahy, offered 226 successful amendments.

(32,640 posts)Warren's real power lies in her outsized influence, not just for a freshman senator, but for virtually any elected official in Washington. Her pen may not have touched many pieces of legislation that made their way to Obama's desk since her election in 2012, but her fingerprints are all over them.
Warren would be a strong spokeswoman for the party in Congress or outside of it; she spurred creation of a federal agencythe Consumer Financial Protection Bureau without the title of "senator" in front of her name. But allies say Warren's best tool is her seat at the committee table in the Senate. Through hearings on the Senate Banking Committee in particular, Warren's questioning and persistence has lead to rules changes at various federal agencies without needing to get legislation through a Republican-controlled Congress. Most notably, Warren successfully pushed the SEC to require banks to admit wrongdoing in negotiating many settlements.
Even critics acknowledge that Warren's influence, particularly over federal agencies and her Democratic colleagues, goes beyond her fairly brief record of legislative accomplishment.

(58,785 posts)Just to underline. Anyone who checked his going on 30 years in congress would find this...amazing legacy. I've forgotten what the third was. Very important, though!
Of course, the 2016 election is a whole different kind of legacy and genuinely important. I'm guessing we'll have to wait to see if most history books either credit him as a factor critical to many more achievements, such as Kavanaugh and Gorsuch, or relegate him to the footnotes.

(67,782 posts)....actually got added to legislation and, further, added to legislation that passed?
"Amendment" is a rather nebulous term without documentation.
It's a lot of work to write and introduce legislation, it's a relatively simple task to add a few sentences to a 100-page bill.

That's how you rock it out short and sweet. I agree with the context put forward in the op and in your post. One does not have to hold just one or the other.

(49,856 posts)criticizing Dennis Kucinich for pretty much the same thing during the 2008 primaries. Lots of ideas, lots of bills introduced, but very few tangible results. A Kucinich supporter bit my head off and I was really trying to be nice about it. I was just saying that I didn't think Kucinich had the ability to get legislation passed, which was evident by his many years in congress.
Now its 2020 and unfortunately I see the same scenario with Bernie Sanders.

(8,147 posts)basis on which to judge his presidential qualifications and potential to build consensus, get his agenda carried out do we have? If Ben were telling lies about Bernie, we could discount his criticism and consider the source. But facts are facts.
