Sanders campaign knocks Biden on Social Security track record
BY MARTY JOHNSON - 01/18/20 07:28 PM EST 1
Just In...
Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) campaign continued its battle with former Vice President Joe Biden by criticizing Biden's track record on Social Security.
"Joe Biden should be honest with voters and stop trying to doctor his own public record of consistently and repeatedly trying to cut Social Security," Sanders' campaign manager Faiz Shakir said Saturday in a statement.
"The facts are very clear: Biden not only pushed to cut Social Security -- he is on tape proudly bragging about it on multiple occasions."

(9,322 posts)Politifact declares it is false that Joe lauded Paul Ryan. Even if you accept that Bidens was being sarcastic in agreeing we need to cut social security, he then went on to call for means testing, which is cutting social security! Then you are ignoring all the times he agreed to cutting social security as part of a balanced budget deal. But senior citizens can take it to the bank he did not laud Paul Ryan.

(6,110 posts)If I were Biden, I would just come out clean, assume responsibility for all past votes,
including the Iraq war vote, and then declare he has evolved and what his current agenda is,
is all that counts, not what he did 20 or 30 years ago. Circumstances change, and agenda has to evolve with it.

(24,122 posts)The corporate media refuses to vet Joe, so it's up to Bernie to raise Joe's past comments and votes. Good for Bernie... better we know the truth before nominating our Democratic nominee, because tRumpy won't ignore Joe's past record.

(383 posts)No parsing or nuance can get around the fact he tried to freeze SS cost of living increases and proudly said so on the Senate floor. All politics aside we need to have him explain that position and if it's different now acknowledge and renounce so we can move on with certainty.

(145,152 posts)Do really want sanders vetted? sanders escaped vetting last cycle because he was mathematically eliminated after super Tuesday. the Clinton oppo file is still available and well as the trump file Trump had a two foot thick book of oppo research on Sanders http://www.newsweek.com/myths-cost-democrats-presidential-election-521044
So what would have happened when Sanders hit a real opponent, someone who did not care about alienating the young college voters in his base? I have seen the opposition book assembled by Republicans for Sanders, and it was brutal. The Republicans would have torn him apart. And while Sanders supporters might delude themselves into believing that they could have defended him against all of this, there is a name for politicians who play defense all the time: losers....
The Republicans had at least four other damning Sanders videos (I dont know what they showed), and the opposition research folder was almost 2-feet thick. (The section calling him a communist with connections to Castro alone would have cost him Florida.) In other words, the belief that Sanders would have walked into the White House based on polls taken before anyone really attacked him is a delusion built on a scaffolding of political ignorance.

(383 posts)Before the general election season starts I'd like to hear him renounce his earlier position. He talks passionately here about his repeated tries to join with Republicans freeze Social Security, Medicare and veterans benefits. He's so passionate about the need to freeze those earned benefits I absolutely believe him.
If he acknowledged and renounced those past positions instead of denying I would be more inclined to put faith in his current position.

(383 posts)I posted an entirely different video with Biden saying he wanted to freeze Social Security, Medicare and Veterans benefits. Biden is on video and print over four decades saying the same thing over and over.
Are you claiming all the videos are fake or we can't believe our eyes and ears? That's what it seems like and I'm trying to determine if that's willful or if you don't realize the politifact piece is only addressing a single video.

(24,122 posts)Vetting Joe's record is WAY overdue. If the corporate mainstream media won't do it, then I guess it's up to Bennie to do it on behalf of We The People!!
Yes Aaron, Joe SHOULD address his past comments on Social Security... but he CAN'T, for obvious reasons. Bernie's caught ol' Joe with his hand in the SS cookie jar!! A proper vetting of Joe is now starting to bear this out.
