Joe Biden calls game developers "little creeps" who make titles that "teach you how to kill"

Biden, who is currently campaigning to become the Democratic nominee for the 2020 presidential election, shared his opinions in an interview with the New York Times. When asked about Silicon Valley’s expansion of power during his time in the Obama administration, Biden said: “And you may recall, the criticism I got for meeting with the leaders in Silicon Valley, when I was trying to work out an agreement dealing with them protecting intellectual property for artists in the United States of America. And at one point, one of the little creeps sitting around that table, who was a multi- — close to a billionaire — who told me he was an artist because he was able to come up with games to teach you how to kill people.”

“And then one of these righteous people said to me that, you know, 'We are the economic engine of America. We are the ones.' And fortunately I had done a little homework before I went and I said, you know, I find it fascinating,” Biden continued. “As I added up the seven outfits, everyone’s there but Microsoft. I said, you have fewer people on your payroll than all the losses that General Motors just faced in the last quarter, of employees. So don’t lecture me about how you’ve created all this employment.. The point is, there’s an arrogance about it, an overwhelming arrogance that we are, we are the ones. We can do what we want to do. I disagree.”

Biden has expressed his distaste for video games in the past. During 2013, while he was vice president, he proposed an additional tax on violent media, including violent games.

Despite numerous studies showing no link between violent video games and real-life violent crimes, we’ve seen several politicians suggesting extra taxes be added to the titles.

Yeah, it's video games. Despite pretty much every study, ever, I'm sure we need to crack down on video games.

And please tell me how this isn't pandering to the older crowd while telling the younger crowd that you don't care?

There is a huge difference between concerns about concentration of ownership, anti-trust, and tax policies on the one hand, and labeling individuals who work in an industry as creeps.

1. Video games are a form of media. It is very similar. Most studies confirm this.
2. Oh, no...."very concerned."
3. The APA makes it clear that there has been no show effect of video games on violence.
4. The APA does show that there is somewhat of a connection between video games and increased aggression. With significant increases in aggression coming with increased exposure. But the DO NOT have the connection to violence.
5. They CERTAINLY do not claim that it is the cause of increased shootings. Not at all.

But, please, do inform me more. So far it has been the same old. I'd love to hear the new information.

He didn't. What?

Is that even logical to say that? Was that off the cuff or has he taken any time to look into the phenomena and culture of both game creation and play? There are good and bad sides to it, as with any cultural phenomena to some degree. That's a big of a backwards and rather conservative view he is espousing because...

There are many TYPES of video games, so a blanket statement is ridiculous. What about all those horror movies? How about all those demented authors who write gruesome, disgusting stories that people love to read? Are they learning to be monsters and psychos, maybe serial killers? Watch out for Grandpa, he likes those movies and books, so he must be an old creep! Of course, that is not to mention the biographies and documentaries about serial killers, bloody wars, an a host of atrocities. People who make, watch and read that stuff are, well, creeps and could be dangerous.

What VP Biden is missing here, and it really should be a glaring issue is that the USA has been and is a rather violent culture. We may present a nice facade of civility and reason, but that's maybe our wishful thinking. We are getting better, but the violence is in the culture and what games, movies, books, etc., provide is a mirror, if anything.

There is the old question as to whether art mirrors reality or reality mirrors art. We need to ask that question again collectively here in this country and consider it to be important and vital that we get some insights for a change.

Is Biden going to be an old fuddyduddy? I would have preferred he just skirted that one if he is going to reflect the thinking and morality of the good old days, because I see that's where that sentiment is coming from.

53. John Carmack is the only person I know of that might fit part of this description
Mon Jan 20, 2020, 05:11 PM
Jan 2020

He's a genius programmer and video game developer that created Doom, Quake, and many of the engineering techniques for creating first-person perspective video graphics. Doom, which is perhaps what the general public might know best, is a game where you play a space marine that uses lots-o-guns to kill literal demons from hell that are invading mars. Obviously, John Carmack is a creepy, murdery sociopath.

Edit to add:
I see kotaku has dug up some actual meetings, which are helpful.
https://kotaku.com/unsolved-mystery-which-game-industry-exec-did-joe-bide-1841073390

One meeting included the boss of EA. Another meeting included boss of Bethesda (which owns Doom/Quake). Neither of these guys are game developers. They're businessmen, and both boomers too, so describing them as "little creeps" (which is an ageist attack, unless he's literally calling them small) seems unlikely. It's possible that he was referring to Mark Pincus, who was almost a billionaire at the time and is a gen Xer. Too bad Pincus' company's biggest game is Farmville, a game where you pretend to grow plants because you like growing things.
