Bloomberg Is a Democrat With a History of Backing Republicans — Including In 2018
Michael Bloomberg's team has trumpeted his role in helping Democrats win control of the House of Representatives last year. He poured tens of millions of dollars into 24 House races; Democrats won all but three of them.

https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/politics/2019/12/03/michael-bloomberg-political-donations-republicans-history-president-run

As mayor, Bloomberg endorsed President George W. Bush for re-election over Democrat John Kerry.

And as Democrats seek to win control of the U.S. Senate, it's notable how many Republican senators Bloomberg has backed in recent years:

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey
Late-Arizona Sen. John McCain
Maine Sen. Susan Collins

Former Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, among others.
"Now he wants to come in and claim that he's this Democratic savior, but he was actually backing Republicans," Klein said. "He also did that when he was mayor."

One of Bloomberg's new rivals, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, may have a particular beef with him: he backed then-Republican Sen. Scott Brown in their 2012 contest. But no matter: Warren prevailed by eight points.

Bloomberg could be doing so many better things with his money than this disruptive vanity project. He could donate to efforts to protect voting rights and election integrity, for instance. Or donate his money to help the eventual Democratic nominee and to help the Democrats take back the Senate. In that way he's the kind of politician I like, he's a good and fast learner, plays well with others, listens to counsel, and I don't think he'd be a disaster as president.

My worst problem with him as a presidential candidate is that it might fracture the previously monolithic black vote (12% of all in 2016!) plus lose us other votes, especially from indies. In safe times I wouldn't worry about that, but we're not in safe times. To put it mildly. We're facing potential fascist takeover.

But just regarding his very limited experience, I think we should wait until Mayor Pete develops further and that this time we can and should choose for more.

with older voters or with anyone for that matter. Biden is a good man and I would happily vote for him. But I've seen several polls where Pete does very well in that demographic. I've even heard people joking that Pete is an older man in a young body.

I think we forget that a lot of folks who 20 or 30 years ago would never have voted for a gay man or woman now have had to come to terms with the fact that they have friends and family members they love who are gay. In the past, they could pretend it wasn't true because so many stayed in the closet, but I've seen firsthand how the knowledge that their own loved ones are gay changed their feelings dramatically. I no longer think it's a deal-breaker the way it would have been a couple of decades ago.

because Buttigieg hasn't been polling at all well with black voters, and we need black voters.

Pete hasn't been doing as well as the other top candidates in the GE matchups against Trump, either.

I like Pete -- always have.

But right now Bloomberg is ahead of Buttigieg in RCP's averages. Bloomberg's tied with Warren or even slightly ahead in some polls. Bloomberg's doing about as well as Sanders and nearly as well as Biden in some GE polls.

And Bloomberg can outspend Trump and the GOP, leaving Democratic donors to focus on down-ballot races.

Of course that can change. I'm glad Pete did this well in Iowa.

But that doesn't change his age or lack of experience.

And Iowa, like NH, isn't very representative of the Democratic electorate.

Black Americans comprise more than a fourth of the Democratic Party. Pete's numbers are terrible with this segment and they won't get better.

Yes, Bloomberg is a billionaire but he is a self-made one (his dad was a bookkeeper). He managed an area for 12 years that in population would rank as the 13th largest state in the union. And he has real cred when it comes to climate change, health insurance, and education.

He funds his own campaign - no one owns him. And because of that huge advantage, he can sell his story more effectively than Pete.

He is clearly more successful than Pete but with a clear advantage - he has over 40 years on him.

Bloomberg isn't my choice, but he is electable if he makes the right moves.

67. Bloomburg, Biden and Buttigeig
Tue Feb 4, 2020, 08:15 PM
Feb 2020

Bloomberg entered the race after he saw that Biden was not yet hitting on all cylinders, and while I think Biden is a more visibly compassionate person, I also think Bloomberg may very well end up bringing in a fair number of the 4th Industrial Age 1 %ers and the Silicon Valleys, Forests and similar corridors on both sides of the political divide (think Gates, Buffett, etc.). He also scares the pants off of Trump.

As my wife put it, Trump would eat Buttigeig for a snack, and while I think most Democrats generally agree with Sanders' platform, the Socialism label will doom him outside of the caucuses, especially having lost to Buttigeig in Iowa. Sanders will take New Hampshire, but he really needed Iowa in a way that Biden and Bloomberg didn't. I'm also not going to count Warren out in New Hampshire, but Bloomberg could very well end up being the true stealth candidate here.

Buttigeig being gay is not a problem with most of the people at DU, but it is a showstopper for evangelists who may be wavering in their support for Trump, especially among older voters. I'd also agree that Bloomberg's experience as mayor of New York City weighs far more heavily in many people's minds than Buttigeig's political experience. Where Biden has the edge is in foreign policy, but the difference between Biden and Bloomberg there is a lot smaller than you might think at first blush given that New York is large enough and diverse enough to make major waves in International waters.

So... grain of salt. That said...

Bloomberg has proven he can build and manage a large organization. As a politician, he was mayor of a city with a population bigger than a lot of states. Plus, he got re-elected a few times. Oh, and he has a huge pile of cash to outspend the other billionaires who are funding the GOP.

Buttigieg has some great ideas, but running a mid-sized city in Indiana kind of pales in comparison. But, like Obama, his biggest asset is that he's very well spoken and has great energy. Is that enough this time out? Not sure.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

There are plenty of people in our party who will not vote for a woman, nor a married gay man. I know at least 7 Democratic voters (those who at least display their bigotry openly), 1 Chicano man, 3 white men , 2 white women, 1 Latina. These are people I have known for many years who come to my home for holiday meals and birthday parties. Not in a million years would I have guessed they would voice these opinions. I found out at Thanksgiving when I overheard them on the front porch while they were having a smoke. I'm usually a coward with this sorta thing, but two of our other guests were looking down at their feet and nervous. I told the offenders our household was one of acceptance and love, and if they wanted to talk that sort of crap, they had to go home and troll FB. They laughed, but they did stop the language they were using and hugged me and apologized. Our other two guests hugged me and thanked me, I apologized and did a shot with them. Christmas, there was zero garbage talk. I know I didn't change minds, but our home is now comfortable for all who visit.

I like Pete, I wanted someone who is younger than me (I'm 68) but I still think you
are not going to get people in small towns and rural midwest or south (well, the south) who
will vote for a gay guy. I live in Michigan and I just cannot see the small towns on the
way up north, who still have republican signs and, believe it or not, occasionally, a confederate flag (these people are so stupid they don't seem to realize that Michigan
fought on the Union side) voting for a gay guy. I just don't see it. I like Pete, but I honestly
think Sanders would have a better chance. I am a Biden supporter and I hope he gets the
nomination. I have said from the beginning I would like a Biden/Harris or Biden/Demmings
or, here's thought, Biden/Buttigegg ticket. I would give a months social security check to
see the evangelicals heads explode to see Pete and Chasten dance at the inauguration.

... his sexual orientation is not a negative. My sister, sister-in-law, and nephew are gay, as are many of my friends over the years. For me it is his lack of experience.

I think Buttigieg is charismatic, has a good background for politics, and has some great ideas. I also think he is not ready to run the country.

While he would do it better than our current president I would like to see Pete serve two terms in Congress and two terms as the Indiana governor, then run for the White House in 2032. He would have a combination of character, ideas, and experience that would be hard to beat.

Not that I am happy with Bloomberg.

Thus I am still undecided.

The good mayor has a similar hurdle to overcome that Obama had in 2008, fear of attempting a first time historic event. Obama had a bit of an advantage over Mayor Pete in that it had been 24 years since the last failed attempt at a first time historic event and for Mayor Pete it's only been 4 years.

He's running a strong campaign, though, and could get to the top without being a replacement for anybody. He's that good all on his own. The reluctance at attempting a first time historic event will subside.

104. I'm confused, too -Bloomberg has 4 things against him
Wed Feb 5, 2020, 10:03 AM
Feb 2020

1. Bloomberg is 77 years old. Sorry, but age really does matter in this election. Facing the holy mess and unprecedented crises that will greet the next president will face on every front will require stamina, energy, and fresh ideas, and the ability to think on your feet. Taking on a job like this at this time in our history at age 77 or 78 is just a no in my book (And, yes, I feel this way about Biden and Bernie, too).
2. By skipping the 4 early primaries, campaigning solely via TV ads, and "self-funding" his campaign (translation: buying the election), Bloomberg shows a fundamental disrespect for voters and the primary process. He's lost me on this issue alone.
3. Bloomberg is a Republican.
4. Buttigieg is superior to Bloomberg in almost every way and he is running a brilliant campaign.(See the Vox.com piece I posted elsewhere in this forum (https://www.vox.com/2020/2/4/21121636/pete-buttigieg-beat-trump-win-2020-election-primaries?)

Bloomberg is buying his way in.

He put a d after his name and is buying it.

An oligarch. The very definition of it.

I am almost 50. A lifelong new Yorker,.

Bloomberg did indeed BUY his 3rd term. He barely squeaked by a NY native , a black Democrat running for mayor in BILL THOMPSON. Bloomberg just barely squeaked by, and that was only by outspending him 20 to1. Many Democrats were let down by their party. They saw the money Bloomberg was spending and decided to not even try. And he just barely won.

Then Bloomberg, an out of touch upper east side billionaire, continued to reign terror on the black community in nyc by his ordering the police to violate their rights.

How is any of that okay.???

He is not a centrist, just a power hungry out of touch billionaire. He made it damn near impossible for working ny ars to live in the city. He started the decay of the nyc housing authority buildings.
