Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumJust one day, ok?
Christ, I cant believe how many anti-Bernie posts Ive seen in the last week, and especially in the last 24 hours!
Give the guy credit where credit is due. BERNIE WON NEW HAMPSHIRE!
I cant believe that this morning I woke up to threads, from friends, saying Well, Bernie plus Liz only got 90,000 votes, while Pete plus Amy got 120,000 votes.
And Bernie had 60% in 2016, now he only has 29%- thats half the numbers he had last time!
Jesus, folks- its a NINE WAY CONTEST this time! Of COURSE the vote is going to be spilt a different way this time. The bottom line is- BERNIE WON!
How about we all just acknowledge that fact, say congrats to BERNIE, recognize the number 2 and 3 as great competitors who placed silver and bronze, and move to the next contest. Lets not get all wrapped up trying to tear anybody down.
A win is a win. Lets go to the next race, please, with some dignity.
Thank you-

I really try to avoid the insult wars but sometimes they drag me in.

Truth is Sanders brought in more young voters in Iowa and NH - not less. Sanders got more young people than the next 4 ca di dates combined. Sanders won the largest minority voters in Iowa and NH - even if the states are predominantly white - the POC chose Sanders.
In addition A few numbers from last night per AP:
70% support M4A
80% say econ system unfair
2/3 want to fundamentally change politics
All this bodes very well for Sanders. The electability question is going to be answered with more Sanders wins coming up. Pundits wrong about Bidens electability and they are now throwing their weight behind candidates with less POC support than Sanders had in 2016 when all you heard was Sanders wasnt electable with his better POC support.
Congratulations Bernie!

(10,154 posts)But I saw some trolling too. Saw some fake Russian groups posted as if they were a grass roots organization. Saw posts that were misspelled, full of emotional insults and useless insults about candidates that did not address policy issues. There is some clear Russian trolling going on.

Bernie was never predicted to hit 29% at his highest followed by Pete and Amy who did better than expected based on those same polls.

when you say, "He underperformed worse than anybody imagined." I can't imagine who you are describing. Yourself?
If you look at the data, you'll see he was predicted to lose to Warren a month ago.

Each of our candidates will have their better states and worse ones. Warren will get some, Klobuchar will, Biden said he'd do better in SC--and so on and so on--but right now, we've only heard from 4% of the states.
Nobody gets to gloat until November 4th. Then we can all celebrate as a team.

(12,165 posts)Im not that irritated that Bernie won. He worked hard for it. What Im irritated by is the number of posts demanding that we feel a certain way about his win. And, I am disgusted about the posts calling for Warren to drop out.
I had to step away from DU during the 2016 primary season because things became too heated. I dont want the same atmosphere to take hold this cycle. The improvements to the jury system and having a dedicated primary forum have really helped.

(11,256 posts)I learned how to use "ignore" in 2016 and it helped me immensely.
I don't think the op is asking you how to feel - just asking people here to consider not dumping on Sanders for a day after he had a victory.
Primary season is very tough sometimes. my first at DU was Kerry versus Dean in 2004, and they haven't gotten much better. The good news is that most of us want better things for our fellow Americans. . . and usually will be willing to talk policy to get there.
Best wishes to you and your preferred candidates.

(53,061 posts)He is currently running at half the level of 4 years ago.
75% of the Democratic Party does not want B Sanders.
Enjoy your brief and narrow "lead".
The reason that 65+ year olds don't support Sanders is that we don't want McGovern 2.0. Losing 49 states once is enough.
We all know what lies ahead: the number of candidates narrows and the closer to a 2 person race the more Bernie loses.
Then the candidate and his devotees will give a tepid endorsement and give bitter and angry demonstrations about how unfair the party that he is not a member is.
Bernie Sanders is Donald Trump's wet dream. Supporting Sanders brings a Trump re election closer. Enjoy.

(11,256 posts)LOL, I've heard this argument comically mocked for being completely out of touch, yet here it is being used sincerely.
Can you think of anything that has changed in the last 50 years that might make things different? Including the fact that the electorate has been impoverished by stagnant wages for 50 years? And that His Lardship is truly hated?
Only about 1/3 of people on DU will even know who McGovern is.

(34 posts)No matter who is your preferred candidate please try to imagine any of the other candidates as our nominee. Really go there.
Sanders- will promote structural change and move the goalposts back to the left. Has the youth vote. Is well liked in the quote-unquote heartland. Is authentic means what he says.
Biden-well liked in the heartland. Tons of experience. Made mincemeat out of Paul Ryan. When he hits back he hits hard. Let's people know our house is on fire. Huge inroads with POC.
Koblucher- well liked and respected by her colleagues. From the heartland. Has had wonderful debates. Started her campaign in a freaking blizzard for goodness sake. Half of the New York times pick for president. Can kill with kindness.
Buttigeg- calls out fake Christians one of my personal favorites. Has served in the military. From the heartland. Young the future. Talks about structural change to the courts. Brings diversity comes from a marginalized group.
Warren- she has a plan. Well liked. Moves the goalposts to the left. As a bankruptcy attorney will change the bankruptcy code. Has a lot of followers in the suburbs. Really speaks to woman's issues.
Bloomberg- has the money to go toe-to-toe with Trump. Runs awesome commercials. Reaches into places where there hasn't been a democratic message in ages.has put his money where his mouth is in the past for example 2018. Does not attack other Democratic candidates. Is going to be with us through the Long haul.
These are just a few examples. But imagine each candidate as our nominee. Really go there and reconcile that any one of these candidates could be our nominee.
*I use the heartland because we only lost in 3 states by 77000 votes. I only call it that because other people refer to it that way. I have thoughts I will not share right now.
