(12,047 posts)Michael Bloomberg has bought his way into the 2020 presidential race with hundreds of millions of dollars from his personal fortune. But he may not provide any details about where that money comes from until more than half of the Democratic primary is over.
While his rivals have disclosed years of financial details on everything from book deals to consulting clients to vacation homes, Bloomberg has not released any financial information since launching a late 2020 campaign fueled entirely by his $60 billion-plus in wealth. The billionaire and former New York City mayor was granted an extension on filing mandatory financial disclosure forms until March 20 more than halfway through the delegate race and after Super Tuesday, when Bloomberg hopes to make his first splash in delegate-rich states like California and Texas.
Bloomberg has often blamed his late entry into the 2020 race for his unusual choices, such as not trying to qualify for the Democratic debates or skipping the Iowa caucuses. Critics see something else: A candidate with a history of buying his way around requirements that less wealthy politicians have to follow. Hes skipping the democracy part of this, Elizabeth Warren quipped in a recent MSNBC interview.
The notion that we can go through Super Tuesday without having this legally required information for a presidential candidate who is spending millions of dollars is troublesome, said Meredith McGehee, executive director of the government oversight group Issue One. The American people are being asked to make a decision about a candidate without information that, the law says, should be important.

Bloomberg right now is nailing Trumpass to a wall. So, people find that refreshing and giving a sense of hope.

(36,186 posts)Hes an ass.
But he is taking it to trump.
He is pro choice.
He is not a climate change denier.
So there are some things in there for our side.
It does not have to be a zero sum game. We will lose if people think it is.

(36,186 posts)There are mainstream black legislators and mayors supporting him. I dont speak for anyone.
However it is still early. I am not decided on him. But one thing I do know is he is taking it to Trumpass right now. And it is the reason his support is growing even over considering everything you have pointed out.
So, I think my point still stands.

(17,537 posts)True, it would be a harder question if Bloomie were worse in other areas, such as racism, than Trump. But he's not. He may be less than great (and that makes me unhappy and hoping he's not the top of the ticket); but he's not an overt fucking Nazi-lover like Trump.

(17,537 posts)and THAT is what is pissing me off so much this primary season.
Last time around BS called Planned Parenthood "establishment" as if all women have access to reproductive rights and proper care. So, now I am hearing that someone - who is not worse than Trump on other issues - who is FAR FAR better on women's rights, is only "slightly better"?
Fuck that.
I want a nominee who is better in all areas. But if it comes down to Bloomberg I will take it, because women's rights are NOT an issue of "slight" importance.

His "no one talked to me about S&F ..." is a damn lie, I'm not convinced he's changed on that front

(17,537 posts)What I am trying - and failing - to wrap my head around, is how some people (not sure it includes you), can equate Bloomberg to Trump and ignore the key areas where he is MUCH better, and the fact he truly isn't as bad on other areas of importance. Sure, I look a little side-eye at Bloomie's past policies like S&F - but he was a mayor then, responding (incorrectly) to people's concerns about crime. How will that show up if he is President? In judge appointments, I would think. But does anyone here think his judge appointments will be worse than Trump's? If so, why? If not, then how can they equate Bloomberg with Trump? "Less bad" may not be our first choice but it sure as hell is better than re-electing Trump.
And to be clear, Bloomie is NOT my first choice - for exactly these concerns. But I do think he can beat Trump and I don't think we should be obscuring the differences.

(90,225 posts)... are ignoring that part and expect PoC that are not politicos to come out in droves ... that doesn't happen.
Of course overall MB is better than Trump but he's the worst of what's available for us right now on multiple areas including who can beat Trump.

(8,556 posts)Also, its the style and intensity of the attack ads he is running against Trump. They seem to be working very well and most likely driving Trump crazy. No one else is doing anything like that.
Here are the polling numbers that show Bloomberg ahead by 6pts according to RCP..

(54,770 posts)should have been targets of such policies, lots of minority communities want guns off the streets so they, and their kids, don't have to fear being shot.
I'd suggest listenting to what some of them have to say, before wondering why they are saying it --
Here's just one: blob:https://www.msnbc.com/f1f676ef-cd5f-44d6-be70-2ed0d01c634d
Listen to Rep Lucy McBath, whose son was murdered by a racist gun owner. Listen to Black members of 'Mothers Against Guns," who want kids to walk down the street without getting shot. "Stop and Frisk" wasn't the best approach, but it was better than doing nothing at a time when innocent kids were getting shot just walking down the street in high crime areas.
