Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBernie is looking silly with this tax return release delays....
I voted for Bernie in the Kansas primary in 2016, but numerous clips of him trying to explain why he is not releasing taxes makes him look like he is hiding something.
His campaign advisor or PR person needs to jump on this ASAP.

(7,142 posts)I see that Beto isn't committing how many years he will release. Be careful about calling out the splinter in someone else's eye.
Frankly I don't think that many of the Democratic candidates have released his/her taxes, some have released 10 even 12 years. Also I see that Kirsten only released 1 year, will that be the standard for all our candidates?

(61,538 posts)One by one, others who have declared for the presidency are releasing many years of returns.
Bernie is being compared to Trump. They are the only two who have been promising to release their returns for years and haven't.
Trump is not a good standard.

(31,261 posts)She has done that every year of her political career. The 2018 just adds to what she has already released. I think Harris does the same thing, her past returns are in the public record.
As far as I can tell, among the majors only Beto and Buttigieg hasn't released, but I read that Buttigieg released past years returns as mayor, so those are in the public record.
Bernie really is the only person that seems to have an issue.

(108,955 posts)have also all released at least 10 years.
Bernie is the only one, however, who started running 3 years ago, and never coughed up more than a single 7 page 2014 return.

Gillibrand has now published her tax returns dating back 10 years.

(22,065 posts)under a so called audit for what seems like forever. Yeah, sure. Crook's tax returns are riddled w/ fraud and this would be discovered should the tax returns be placed under a forensic accounting examination.
Remember rump crowing about one shouldn't pay taxes if they don't have to? I suspect that he took loads of unclaimed money from foreign entities and didn't claim it as income. Had to be a significant amount too. Should have been declared as income.

(23,061 posts)I had no idea about his taxes at the time. Now, 3 years later and he still has released no returns - makes me think his involvement with Ukraine and Manafort must have been more extensive than already realized? Of course, that's just a guess. Since he employed Manafort's' partner in the pro-Russian Ukraine government as his campaign manager, it also could be a real issue for him? If not that, there's bound to be some other fuckery in there or he'd have released it.

(42,862 posts)This is a great big "fuck you" to the American voters and to the other candidates.
It's the political equivalent of "Pleading-the-Fifth" ... and although that's not legal proof of wrongdoing, it certainly does make people wonder what's being hidden.
People deserve to know if the candidate they're thinking of voting for is honest and that he (or she) is not a "tax-cheat". The voters are entitled to know where a candidate's money comes from, how it's being invested, donated, saved. Is the money in a domestic bank or in some off-shore haven? Is the candidate generously giving to his/her favorite charities? If so, what are they? There's MUCH to be learned about a candidate by looking at his or her full and complete tax returns.
Personally, I think it's hypocritical for ANYONE to be lecturing other politicians about how important things like "honesty" and "transparency" are... and then to completely ignore that standard. Any candidate who does that would be revealing his (or her) hypocrisy.
It's my belief that anyone who doesn't release their full and complete tax returns (for at LEAST ten years prior... no "summaries" and no "corrections" or "re-filing'') should be disqualified and ineligible from appearing in any DNC debates.
