Pete Buttigieg & Beto O'Rourke: I just don't get it

I'm sorry to say that I've seen several interviews with both these candidates and I just don't get their appeal. That is not to say that both would be a vast improvement over the current President. They would.

But I just don't see how they rise above any of the several excellent candidates already running. I've watched interviews with Harris. Warren, Booker, Sanders, Klobuchar and others. They all seem so much more substantive on issues and policy. I'm not seeing this with Buttigieg & O'Rourke. Maybe I've seen some bad interviews for both. But their main argument seems to be 'vote for me because I'm a good guy'.

Thus, it is a mystery to me why they have generated so much excitement. There seems to be a whiff of cult of personality around them rather than genuine support based on their positions on important issues. What I've seen is a lot of style from both but little substance.

President Obama had a lot of style but there was substance behind that. I'm just not seeing that with either Buttigieg or O'Rourke. Again, maybe I have just seen bad interviews with them. If there are better ones, I'd love to see them. But at this point, I think we have far better candidates with much more substance than either of these two. This is not to put them down, both would make a much better President than Trump. And I would gladly vote for either if they were the nominee of the Democratic party.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

Buttigieg's life story is impressive but being mayor of a 100,000 resident town falls way short and O'Rourke's problem is the same.

Good guys but both could use 5-10 more years of meaningful experience.

16. That is a very good way to put it.

It will be a huge job to turn this country around. It will take years and loads of experience. It will be 24/7 job. Not that they don't have experience, they do, but do they have what it will take. That's what I'm concerned about. Unfortunately, we have seen what no experience has done to this country. Again, I know they have experience, but do they realize how their life will change. This is not an election like any we have had in the past because if it was I'd say to all go for it, however it is not and hopefully will never be again.

Having said that I of course will be happy to vote for whoever gets the nod. Hopefully when we vote in the primary we vote with our heads instead of our hearts.

11. I think that's exactly it

Youth and energy. Both Buttigieg and O'Rourke are new faces on the block and they have an attraction that is hard to pin down, particularly O'Rourke who definitely has that 'it' factor. Buttigieg is very bright and well spoken; I've listened to him several times. O'Rourke appeals to the emotions, gears people up with the power of his personality.

Will they do well in the race? I don't know. I think the debates will be critical for all our candidates but particularly these two. Stumble during those debates and it's basically over in terms of support and donations.

We shall see if either can go the distance. I'll be waiting and listening.

If one of them steals the show, he will take off. This what Trump did, just by being the biggest asshole. But O'Rourke and Buttigieg are gentlemen, so at least you won't have to hold your nose.

That only applies to one candidate in the line-up (who I will not name here).

In fact, I find both Buttigieg and O'Rourke fascinating to watch as they get their feet under them and churn up excitement. That's all to good for the Democratic Party, the excitement factor.

But yes, the debates will definitely define both for good or ill.

He is using an innovative strategy in a time when we are looking for fresh ideas. Innovation means high-risk high-reward. He will either take off or fall flat. I don't see a lot of middle ground. But even if he falls flat, he is young and dynamic, so he will still have plenty.of chances in the future.

says, those whose generation is literally going to be impacted the most in the years to follow, to step up and have more of a voice in what goes on. Beto, Buttigieg, AOC, etc.

Too long we have older white guys in power in Congress (look at them) and who seem to have a sense of entitlement about them (rump being the worse by far), and they act like god on earth. Sickening.

Enough. I am sick of them. Time to throw out the old bath water and start over.

10. I find a lot of substance in Buttigieg, but he is also using a communications strategt

that works well for most people, but obviously not everyone. He speaks in terms terms of values and goals, rather than 10-point plans. When he takes a position but is often non-traditional and not easily categorized. Sometimes he provides specifics, but even then it's not super-detailed. I like this style, but if you are trying figure out if he is progressive or moderate, you may be frustrated.

O'Rourke is somewhat similar, but I find him to be speaking in platitudes and taking fairly standard positions that he tries to make sound different.

22. some stats

44.4 percent of TV news staffers were female, up from 44 percent in 2016.
Females accounted for 43.1 percent of staffers at stations in the top 50 markets; 44 percent of staffers at the
next largest 51 to 100 markets; and 46.5 percent in markets larger than 100.

TV news broadcasts 44 percent feature women
online news 40 percent written by women.
print news 41 percent written by women.

Of traditional newspaper staffs. Of those staffs, White men constituted 52.1 percent, White women
31 percent, men of color 8.5 percent, women of color 8.11 percent, and those of unknown race .29 percent

41.2 percent of daily newspaper employees were female.
47.8 percent of online-only news organization were female.
22.2 percent of daily newspaper employees were racial minorities.
25.6 percent of online-only news site employees were minorities.
At least one woman was among the top 3 editors in 79.3 percent of all those newsrooms. At least one person of
color was among the top 3 editors at 32.7 percent of all those newsrooms.
Of all newsroom managers, 19 percent were minorities and 41.8 percent were women.

https://tools.womensmediacenter.com/page/-/WMCStatusofWomeninUSMedia2019.pdf

Obviously there is some overlap, but probably 45% to 50% are non white males. Buttigieg is also a minority (he is gay).

For Mayor Pete, whom I could easily support, he does great in interviews and explains his positions well. He's wicked smart, too.

I don't know a lot about Beto other than he's really popular and nearly unseated Cruz. Putting up a fight in TX and doing as well as Beto did merits attention. I need to learn more about him, though.

While Beto is an attractive and compelling presence, Pete is talking about a whole different kind of politics - one I believe we desperately need.

Policies are easy; almost all of us want universal health care, action on climate change, end to permanent war, racial reconciliation, etc. But process - thatís what Pete is talking about, in an honest and clear way that weíre not hearing from other candidates. And in my view, thatís the conversation thatís way overdue.

On some issues I disagree with what I understand his positions to be, but I consider the examination of political process not BS, but instead absolutely essential if weíre to move away from the chair-throwing food fight that the media have happily sold us as modern politics.

45. It's the "vision thing"

What major policies vaulted Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to the front over some very much more experienced rivals? It was the "vision thing". Some have it and some don't and people seem to have the ability to see that.

behind it. And both Clinton and Obama were able to intelligently discuss policy.

47. I didn't see it that way

Obama's claim to fame was as a "community organizer". He was a short term Senator and had nothing on his legislative resume that I can recall. Clinton was Gov of Arkansas and his only "accomplishment" of note that he touted during the primaries that I can recall was that Arkansas education improved during his tenure as Gov. I do think Mayor Pete is a much more accomplished speaker on policy than O'Rourke and would not lump them together, but many of the other candidates do not have much they can hand their hats on either.

Harris seems like a fine candidate, but in her short time in the Senate what is her list of accomplishments? Certainly not as long a list as Klochubar or Gillebrand or some of the others. So why is Harris in the lead? (at least here on DU).

Nobody will be able to fake it after the first debates. There are too many strong and qualified candidates for it.

well thought out progressive policy positions... he doesn't just string together a bunch of nice sounding platitudes, which is very admirable in a politician.

62. Nancy Pelosi is a star. Someone with the power to connect and change

people's beliefs. Someone with amazing communication skills. I guess I meant a 'political' star. Obamas. Clintons. Kennedys. Wellstone. Roosevelts. Someone people will remember. And want to connect with again and again. Though I would say Buttigieg is a policy star too. You want to hear more.

70. he is the opposite of a cult of personality, literally

No one outside of absolute political junkies had ever even heard of him until a few months ago.

He has garnered big momentum purely on the results of his speaking, ideas, presentation and future-forward philosophy.

I invite you to watch some of these (broken down by subject).

https://hearpetespeak.com/

He has a massive amount of substance.

55. I like them both...

Ö they both have a command presence. They are engaging and smart... compared to Trump and Pence, they are FDR and Lincoln! This is only the start - we will see the debates and view their specific policy statements before voting. I won't agree 100% with everyone, but the Democrats are way superior to the alternative.

56. Neither one has a serious chance to win the nomination, imo

However, I think BOTH are rising stars in our party and the exposure and experience they get on the campaign trail will serve them well in the future. If we win the presidency in 2020 I would expect to see Mayor Pete graduate to a position in D.C. and Beto will be a Senator representing Texas.

64. People in 1860 likely said the same thing about Abe Lincoln.

He really had not had a lot of success in life prior to winning the Presidency. A one term US House seat but defeated on his reelection attempt, two failed US Senate races between 1849 and 1860, 12 political race defeats in all, a nervous breakdown in his past, two business failures, an ambulance chasing law practice. By comparison, both Buttigieg and Beto are walking in tall cotton. I prefer to listen closely to what a politician is saying, Mayor Pete should outstanding executive policy chops and has a good track record in office. Beto has less substance, but has shown a wonderful capacity to listen and adapt.

66. First off, Americans seem to set the standard for ideal president as someone JFK like

In recent years, Americans have expanded that ideal to include JFK-types of different races as well. The catch is, the person also has to be something "new." That's why Beto is already being forgotten in some ways.

That being said, there is something to both candidates. Both are young, articulate and charismatic. With Beto--there's a passion and emotional connection because he speaks from the heart. With Pete, there's an intellectual connection because he's smart, thoughtful, and appears to be a real problem solver.
