Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI believe 23 states are Open Primary states in which any voter can participate.
Republicans are going to show up in droves to vote for Bernie.
I wonder how other candidates would preform if the nominating process was restricted to Democrats.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(2,436 posts)than that. Bernie is topping out at 25 % in states that he is doing well. I think we are looking at a brokered convention.

(421 posts)I love Bernie but GOP would love to run against Bernie most, paint all of us unfairly as Socialists and win down ballot elections. I donated $1 to Drumpf so I get his campaign lit and it already is using those scare tactics and how Dems are going to install more socialism. He'd say that about any Dem but it'll be so much worse with a self-described democratic socialist leading the ticket. We're in trouble if that happens IMHO.

(219 posts)And take their ball and go home, abandon the Democratic candidate, and give us Trump for 4 more years. Who is the Green Party running this go 'round?

(421 posts)like how Moscow Jill Stein was groomed by Russia to be one in 2016 and give Drumpf the win.
After Super Tuesday we'll get a sense of who will make it to Milwaukee. Moderates will coalesce behind the moderate candidate with the most delegates (currently TBD), and the total from those delegates may exceed Bernie's count. It may be perceived as "rigged" but that's how democracy works. Majority rules.

(5,751 posts)You just tell them which ballot you want. To make it worse, the presidential and senate primaries are on different dates. There is no reason for a Republican to show up on March 24. If turn out in the presidential primary is unusually high, it would be because... droves.

(31 posts)They always talk about doing this but then only a very small few bother going out of their way to do it. Shouldn't be a major factor.

(219 posts)This is a nightmare that we are racing into.
In addition, Republicans have no primary to worry about, so they have the luxury of filling our polling places.

(92,061 posts)In California, the republicans only allow registered republicans to vote in their primary
The California Democratic Party though problem with those who are registered as no party preference to vote in our primary, and newsom just made it easy for non Democrats to vote in the Democratic primary by allowing same day registration on Election Day, which will allow a republican to change their registration to Democratic or NPP, vote in the Democratic primary, and change their registration back to republican

(2,343 posts)In January (we do it after Xmas usually). A cousin and I are the only Dems that are open about it. The Trump-loving patriarch of the family, my uncle, was pushing everyone to vote in the Democratic Primary and do so for Sanders.
Ive had a couple Republican friends tell me they are temporary Bernie Bros.
So...just anecdotal...but I can see it having an impact in some places.
Open primaries ought not be!

(5,924 posts)Not proof, but evidence.
A stonger-than-expected showing for a candidate in those states might be a sign of GOP voters showing up in droves to vote for that candidate, since it's unlikely that GOP Interlopers would have also managed to falsely represent themselves as Democrats to pollsters in proportionate numbers.

(19,948 posts)liberal independents, but this it really is crazy that you can have someone so far to the left who hates the Democratic Party, running under the Democratic banner, and not even a member of the party. Any future candidate should be a member of the party for at least 3 years.
