Politico snips on Biden's excellent performance

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/02/25/democratic-debate-takeaways-117653

Who had the best night? Who had the worst night? Politio seldom gives Biden the time of day, so this is choice.

snips//

For months, Biden only barely survived debates — pummeled here, bumbling there. On Tuesday, he offered a cogent defense of the Obama era, highlighting his experience on issues ranging from gun control to funding for the Centers for Disease Control. He said, “I’m not going to be quiet anymore,” and he wasn’t. Meanwhile, with Biden’s elevation, Buttigieg suffered. He could draw contrasts with Sanders. But Biden has a big part of that lane, and he didn’t give any of it up tonight.

Korecki: The Biden that his supporters and team always wanted finally showed up Tuesday night. He was substantive, feisty and forceful. Biden needs South Carolina to keep his presidential bid alive. He showed that tonight. He began by immediately laying into Sanders on the Vermont senator’s past votes on guns and on Sanders’ flirtation with primarying Barack Obama in 2012. Both points knocked Sanders on his heels — something that so far has rarely happened in this race.

Korecki: This debate may have just helped Biden seal the deal in South Carolina. As POLITICO reported on Sunday, powerful House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn is to endorse the former vice president Wednesday morning. Though the deal with Clyburn was already cut, Biden’s performance tonight only makes it an easier sell for Clyburn, who wields huge influence in South Carolina politics. The debate performance and Clyburn’s backing help create much-needed momentum moving into Saturday’s primary.

Despite their negatives on some good previous debate performances, they did not hold back this time. Thye also noted that astronger Biden is a negative for Sanders.

6. It occurred to me that Joe Biden's performance last night was reminiscent of the 2012 debate

We all recall President Obama's lackluster first debate with Mitt Romney. It stood out because it was so unusual for President Obama to give a second-rate performance. But he did and Democrats were running around with their hair on fire. Then Joe Biden came out and debated Paul Ryan, the Republican Wonder-Boy. Biden quickly turned Ryan into the Republican Clueless-Boy.

There's something to be said about being under the gun, having an election riding on a single moment in time. Joe Biden pulled it out in 2012 and he pulled it out last night. We could argue that he was sharper in 2012, that he had more of the killer instinct. But he did what he had to do under pressure and he won the night. Both times.

That ability is a pretty good measure of the man. He got it done and he did it well.

Onward and Upward!

And yes, even Politico noticed.

I didn't watch that debate but I read about it on DU.. how not good President Obama did.. I was so bummed.. I couldn't believe it. I think it was opined that he was advised not to rock the boat or something like that.

And, then Biden had his debate with Ryan.. so perfect timing!

One important characteristic Biden has is not giving up.. he is resilient.

A great "measure of a man".. Thank you.. how encouraging!

10. Obama was really off his stride that night

I recall reading he was tired and busy and annoyed at the time-consuming debate prep. And it showed. My instinct is that Biden was given a mission to turn it around and destroy Ryan. And boy, did he ever, even laughing at several of Ryan's word salad arguments.

I can't imagine the pressure of last night's debate because Biden knew everything was riding on a single performance heading into South Carolina. But he pulled it out by demonstrating his personal experience/qualifications and defending all things Obama-related. I'm sure Team Biden was cheering from the rafters.

Anyway, the night itself was encouraging, the news of Clyburn's endorsement important and I'm looking forward to the results on Saturday.
