Biden Versus Bernie

I think that the contest is getting down to the two of them. I like them both, for different reasons. Bernie because of his Progressive Policies and his fight for Working Class People. Biden for his steadiness, his years of experience in both Foreign and Domestic Policy, and the fact that he will take the fight directly to Trump.

I honestly would prefer Bernie based upon his policy proposals alone. I do agree with some people who worry that Sanders has too much baggage and will not be the strongest candidate against Trump. Biden on the other hand is more moderate than I would like, but he is the stronger candidate to take the fight to Trump.

For me I like Sanders but he is the riskier candidate. I am not sure that we can afford the risk given the terrible possibility of four more years of Trump. Joe Biden is the safer candidate. He might not be exciting younger voters with a grand progressive vision like Bernie, but Joe has experience, gravitas, and security on his side.

So, even though Joe and Bernie are both very different kinds of candidates, I like them both for different reasons. Bernie might be more exciting, but I think Bernie is the riskier candidate and Joe is the safer candidate. And we must defeat Trump by all means. So that is my two cents.

1. I Would Add

I would add that I like Elizabeth Warren a lot, but it looks like she might be out of contention after Super Tuesday. We shall see what happens tomorrow.

2. Many Biden supporters would love to see some of Senator Sander's policies implemented.

From the Biden supporters I've talked to, they generally have two problems with Bernie:

1. They think that there is about a zero chance that he will get elected.

2. They think that there is about a zero chance that some of his policies, such as M4ALL and free college would pass Congress if he were elected.

We don't hate his policies. We think they are unobtainable at the present time, and that he is unelectable at the present time.

9. Yes

Well said. I was saying elsewhere that if Sanders does not get the nomination, he has still changed the political dialogue for the foreseeable future. 10 years ago no one was talking about Medicare For All, Green New Deal, $15 Dollar Minimum Wage, Free College. Now those are all mainstream topics in Democratic circles and in Media.

Maybe we could elect a Moderate and then be pleasantly surprised when they try to pass more progressive legislation. I think part of Sanders appeal is that he is talking big change, not incrementalism. And big change is more exciting than incrementalism. But of course incrementalism is probably more realistic. Still, I find as I get older that I do not have the time for small incremental change. I want to see big, progressive change in my lifetime.

So, I am glad that Biden supporters like some of those policy ideas. I understand about the problems with Bernie's electability and his ability (or inability) to get things through the Congress. He is no Master of the Senate, as LBJ was. It is not enough to have exciting policy proposals. You have to be able to get them through Congress and be enacted. I wish someone with the legislative chops of Joe Biden could get in charge and push a New Deal/Great Society Type of Program through Congress. Maybe combine the idealism of Sanders with the political savvy of an LBJ. Maybe wishful thinking.

Anyway, thanks for the comment.

8. What are your medical credentials? Just the other day Bernie got on the wrong private plane

Bernie confused Iowa and Nebraska the other day as well.

Have you diagnosed Bernie yet?

Both Bernie and Biden are sharp and focused. Both make gaffes. Your post is ageist.

5. I just think it absolutely sucks...

That our final choice for the Democratic nominee is going to come down to two ancient white men. I thought we were more forward-thinking than that.

7. Yeah

As a Middle Aged White Guy, I must agree with you. Biden seems like he has gone way past his better days. I think his best time to get into a Presidential race was 2016. For a long time, I saw Bernie as being more energetic and had great stamina for his age, but lately he seems to be flagging and looking unhealthy, to the point that I am getting concerned.

A Presidential campaign is a marathon, and requires stamina and energy. As far as Warren goes- she seems unnaturally energetic and youthful given her age. Would that last a whole Presidency, who knows? I do like Elizabeth a lot, I like her smarts, her attitude, her positivity, and her plans. I am at a loss as to why she has not done better in these Primaries. I think that she is a great person.
