3. And his statement regarding the taxes.
Mon Apr 15, 2019, 06:27 PM
Apr 2019
“These tax returns show that our family has been fortunate. I am very grateful for that, as I grew up in a family that lived paycheck to paycheck and I know the stress of economic insecurity. That is why I strive every day to ensure every American has the basic necessities of life, including a livable wage, decent housing, health care and retirement security. I consider paying more in taxes as my income rose to be both an obligation and an investment in our country. I will continue to fight to make our tax system more progressive so that our country has the resources to guarantee the American Dream to all people.”

And this pretty much sums it up:
Daniel Shaviro, a New York University School of Law professor of taxation, who examined the 2018 return at the request of The Post, said the return was straightforward.

“He didn’t do a whole lot, economically or tax-wise, other than earn his Senate salary, Social Security income, and book royalties, as well as paying state and local taxes and giving about $19,000 to charity,” Shaviro said. “This clearly is not the tax return of someone who does either a lot of tax planning or complex investing.”

The earliest return released yesterday, for 2009, was done by hand, which may indicate that the Sanders did the taxes themselves. It showed they had total income of $314,742. All of the other returns have typed entries.

8. My question, after reading the summary
Mon Apr 15, 2019, 06:46 PM
Apr 2019
In 2018, the Sanders donated 3.4 percent of their adjusted gross income to charity. Overall, their charitable giving does not account for additional charitable proceeds from one of Sanders’ books, The Speech, which are donated directly to charity. The Sanders do not take a tax deduction for those contributions, so they do not show up on their tax returns. The Sanders’ donations have gone primarily to senior centers, low-income organizations, educational entities, and environmental and housing advocacy groups.

This last paragraph comes across as kind of defensive. Since they brought it up... I'm curious: Is there any documented evidence of the donations that were given "directly to charity" prior to 2018?

came out in 2011, so I'm sure there is documentation of the proceeds being donated each and every year since then. They just don't claim them as a tax write off.

They amended their return because they previously checked that they had an interest in a foreign account, but their return was amended to say that, no, they did not...

I'm sure this will be followed up on.

I couldn't figure out what it was for, since there were no numbers entered. I looked a little more closely, and the reason for amending it was listed and it was because they had mistakenly entered that they had a foreign bank account when they did not. They also used a paid preparer to prepare the amended return.

The tax returns will be examined and questions will arise. I'm not going to examine them since the only tax returns that I looked at in any detail were the insurance company I used to work for and my own returns.

Besides, just because he released his returns doesn't make it any more likely that people will vote for Bernie. There are other fantastic Democratic candidates that are better leaders who know how to unite the Democratic Party.

I noticed there was a least one new post yesterday Demanding to see the returns! even tho they had been promised for today...had to get one more dig in under the wire.

Now moving on to he's Rich!

2-3 years ago there was at least one poster here claiming that he wasn't rich enough, that after so many years with a good salary he clearly didn't know how to manage his money and was therefore unqualified to run the government...

as if it were somehow a badge of honor to enrich oneself while in office
