Joe BidenCongratulations to our presumptive Democratic nominee, Joe Biden!

Thu Apr 9, 2020, 03:19 PM

There is a rumor on twitter that Bernie has not withdrawn, but merely

"temporarily suspended his campaign" due to coronovirus, so Sanders supporters in states that have not voted yet are being encouraged to vote for him, so he can get the nomination.

Any ideas as to origins of that rumor?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

3. Bernie said his supporters should still vote for him in primaries

Bernie said his supporters should still vote for him in primaries, not for the nomination but for "leverage" for the platform at the convention. These people just took it further to say he can still get the nomination. They are probably the same people that said Joe would drop dead (for unknown reasons) and Bernie would take the nomination.

"leverage" since Biden's platform was clearly chosen by the sheer numbers. So what is the motive to diminish Biden voters participation while encouraging his supporters to continue voting. The duplicity is quite interesting...

4. According to a VT newspaper, BS will still be trying to collect delegates.

Sanders drops out of presidential race

But while Sanders wished Biden well in continuing his campaign, the Vermont senator also said he will remain on the ballot in the rest of the primaries and continue to gather delegates going into the Democratic convention.

“I congratulate Joe Biden, a very decent man, who I will work with to move our progressive ideas forward,” Sanders said. “While Vice President Biden will be the nominee, we must continue working to assemble as many delegates as possible at the Democratic Convention where we will be able to exert significant influence over the party platform.”

But I'll bet $27.00 that he's still "collecting" campaign donations.

14. This Focus On The Platform, Ma'am, Is What Marks Him As Just A Small-Time Marxist

In the small far-left cliques where Sanders had his introduction to politics, party platforms, party manifestos, do matter, because there is little else the group does but wrangle over the platform. Its chief importance is not owed to any demand or proposal for action it contains, but simply to demonstrate who is on top in the clique, and who must accept being on the bottom, or calve off into a clique of their own.

Platforms of a major national party mean nothing. They do not serve as the basis for campaign efforts, they do not bind candidates elected to office in the Party's name. They are aspirational statements perhaps, but in fact are mostly something for delegates to busy themselves with before the big show of nomination by acclaim and the triumphant speeches of the candidates, which is what everyone comes for, along with the meeting of colleagues and the networking. The last meaningful platform fight in the Democratic Party was Mr. Hubert Humphrey's Civil Rights plank in 1948, which when approved kicked off the 'Dixiecrat' walk-out to put Strom Thurmond on the ballot as a Presidential candidate in competition with Mr. Truman.

"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."

8. In Bernie's own announcement

He said that his name will remain on the ballot so as to accumulate delegates and influence the platform.

That doesn't bother me as much as the fact that I still see some Bernie folks posting, "Bernie's still in this. Vote for him and maybe get a deadlocked convention. There's still hope!"

There's some real delusional thinking out there. Bernie has literally said "Joe Biden will be the nominee," but some people still don't get it.

11. This was my first thought, too!! Although not coronavirus related, I took his statements

about delegates to mean he wanted to diminish the complete blowouts he was experiencing which was the key to Biden's delegate lead. Many Biden supporters might take him at his word and not show up, thereby closing the delegate gap, which he can then describe as "influence".

We know his supporters will still show up to vote.

I think he gave this strategy away when he clearly stated he was still collecting delegates. Disclaimer: I'm not on Twitter, but it seems I'm not the only one to find this whole development kinda fishy.

Both involves eliminating campaign activities. However, "suspending" allows a candidate to continue to raise funds (generally to pay off remaining expenses, but also to program for other races).

Urged supporters to continue voting for them, so they could have more 'leverage' at the convention. On past form, Sanders wants to be backed by disruption at the convention so he can strong-arm his way into concessions far greater than reasonable persons would seek, or allow if petitioned.

Other candidates simply employed the legal formula that allows them to continue soliciting funds to pay off their campaign committee's debts.

But threats are a delicate business.

The utterance of a threat is often more effective than its carrying out would be. The reality may fall short of future perils pictured in imagination.

It can be dangerous to threaten convincingly. Sometimes, people see no need to await another's pleasure, and strike pre-emptively to remove the threat.

I was merely pointing out that Elizabeth Warren’s campaign, for example, is also “suspended.” It’s not a rumor, nor is a mere suspension indicative of malicious intent. It’s standard procedure.

No other candidate is telling their supporters to continue voting for them, so I believe Sanders is fine with this mistaken thinking among his supporters.

Like most candidated, he "suspended" his campaign.

Under campaign finance law, if a candidate withdraws, the money flow stops. The campaign stops.

If any candidate suspends, s/he can still accept donations, pay expenses, pay back personal loans.

I just saw in another thread that Senator Sanders is paying staff health care through October. A great gesture of support to his staff, but it is donations which will make the actual payments.

I believe that most, if not all of the other presidential candidates "suspended."

54. None Of The Others, Sir

55. Oh, I agree with you completely.

Thanks for posting. You are correct. I am strongly NOT in favor of the disgraceful behavior Senator Sanders and some of his supporters exhibited before and are exhibiting now. Your comments are spot on.

The other presidential candidates suspended and then personally endorsed, as they should.

Senator Sanders suspended and then... Um, well, duh... The Senator has not and will not be onboard until (or sadly, unless) he endorses Vice President Biden.

I was just surprised people didn't understand the difference between suspended and withdrew. It is purely a financial compliance issue.

56. Thank You, Sir

A pleasure to make your acquaintance. Though a city sort, when I used to do distance running, there was a stretch alongside woods where there were often red-wing blackbirds to be seen. That little flash of scarlet is a charming sight.

57. You, too, Sir.

Also a pleasure. I've read your posts and thank you for your service here. While I live in the woods in the burbs, those weren't the kind of birds which gave me my name. When I was active in the campaign world I helped remove Phil Crane, who was a 35-year back-bench repugnant seat-warmer in the House. Best race I was ever on.
