Terry McAuliffe wont run for president
By MATTHEW CHOI 04/17/2019 09:50 PM EDT Updated 04/17/2019 10:08 PM EDT
Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Wednesday that he would not be running for president in 2020, quelling speculation that he would join an already sizable group of Democratic hopefuls vying to push President Donald Trump out of office.
I love campaigning. I love fighting, McAuliffe told CNNs Chris Cuomo. I would love to have been on that debate stage with Donald Trump, but, you know, weve got to move forward and weve got to bring our party together.
McAuliffe said he would rather concentrate his energy on helping Democrats maintain control of the Virginia Legislature, though he thinks he could have beaten Trump like a rented mule and would have done a good job in the White House.
So Ive listened to the Virginians and Im going to help Virginians for the next six months, McAuliffe said. I could spend eight months traveling around the country running for president or six months really making a difference.
