Is referring to Bernie Sanders as "BS" a subtle way of insulting him?

I know its his initials, but none of the other candidates are referred to by theirs. Joe Biden isn't called "JB", Kamala Harris isn't called "KH", Pete Buttigieg isn't called "PB", etc.

4. Bernie Sanders doesn't seem to have a middle name.

His full name is just Bernard Sanders, so he can't really be referred to initials-wise as anything other than BS. That's unfortunate.

At least Barack Obama could be referred to as BHO.

When I went to high school and college I took the IRT to GSS (Grand Central Station) and switched to the BMT. If it was a nice day I'd walk the eight blocks to school, otherwise I switched to the IND for two stops.

A more dangerous enemy is needed. A militant centrist?

The establishment and high dollar donors are "plotting" "behind closed doors" to "take us down," an "attack on all of us" -- they are "terrified" and "will stop at nothing." I imagine Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer chatting with Barbara Streisand and George Clooney at a fundraiser in a nice hotel (only Chuck eats the canapes). And that's supposed to scare the hell out of us? This is where the organized attack against the people is coming from?

"So far apart were their appetites that when FDR relaxed with a cocktail and a few smoked clams at the end of the day -- a ritual he cherished -- Eleanor often stayed away. I typically try to use candidates' last names consistently. Every now and then I'll use BS for Sanders. If I do, it's not intended as an insult. There is much I don't like about Sanders these days, and usually any post I write about him will have some of that spelled out. There will be no need to infer it from whatever name I use for him.

Now that "Mr. Sanders" is running in a crowded field and is being truly vetted, he and his supporters are showing how thin their skins really are. Politics is a contact sport. I don't use it as a slam, but a shortcut. I used HRC and I was a huge supporter. I'm not sure how he is going to handle being on the burner the way he will be if he turns out to be the front runner. I had one of his supporters at work say that those of us who don't support him are "being mean to Bernie", really? What does he think it will be like in a general election with the bully in chief?

I remember a line from the West Wing, I am fighting the real battles here, I don't have time for the cosmetic ones.

What difference does it make? Who cares?

Besides, if people ARE typing "BS" to passively-aggressively annoy others, it just may be that their "hurt feelings" and "indignant" whining only encourages more of the same.

Personally, I believe that the more people who continually complain about people using Bernie's initials make themselves look worse than those who may be doing it intentionally to get under their skin.

I think it's all rather amusing really. Why would ANYONE get so upset about something like that?

I've said it many times; I was a fan of his long before 95% of people had ever heard of him. I thought he was largely ineffectual, but there was something fun about the way he poked the bear, as long as he voted with us.

That all changed three years ago, when he put his personal glory above the good of the country, and managed to help destabilize not just the country, but the whole damn world in the process.

Personal glory? You meaning trying to get Warren to run for months, so that the conversation during the election could be geared toward going back to our Democratic roots and not geared for thousand dollar plate purchasers and disgruntled Republicans?

I watched him campaign for her, I have watched him continue to bring a voice to causes that I care about. He like, O'Malley ran against someone who had never won an national election from our party. But some people seem to think both men shouldn't have run.

The thing is you and I both live in states that will not change its status in the next general. Yours red and mine blue. And that is the beauty of reading here.

102. Yes, personal glory. We were faced with the election of Donald Trump with a Republican Congress

The instant it became mathematically impossible to win, as he had observed eight years earlier, he should have held rally after rally to bring his supporters to the nominee. Because, we were faced with the election of Donald Trump with a Republican Congress.

Instead, he dragged his feet, complained that he was cheated, and put divisive operatives on the platform committee. I don't care if he felt cheated; at that point, I didn't care if he WAS cheated. Because, we were faced with the election of Donald Trump with a Republican Congress.

Now, he has started up again, attacking the Democratic party, cozying up to FOX news, and staffing his campaign with Jill Stein voters. I believe he will do anything to advance his self-promotion, and the rest of us be damned.

No amount of whataboutism can change any of that.

And, my state has a chance to go blue this time; I don't know if it will happen, but I can state with 100% confidence that it will not happen if Sanders is the nominee.

RFK, sure. I loved Bobby and called him RFK sometimes. People who are fond of Bernie Sanders, or who respect him, or who support him etc. never call him BS. It is not a coincidence what the slang definition of BS is and who it is who insist on calling Bernie Sanders BS.

It isn't a major issue in the world that some folks take pleasure in calling Sanders that, but it becomes laughable to see the denials and the claim of pure innocence. I would have more respect for people who like to call Sanders BS if they would simply admit that they "appreciate" the "coincidence" of what his first and last name initials conjure up. I can deal with it. But the pious denials

So yes, it's used as an insult. (Props to that poster for being honest about it, you don't find that often.) I avoid it myself, for the same reason I didn't refer to Obama as "B.O.". It was a rightwing meme that was used as a dig against Obama (and infrequently used by some here as an insult for the same reason), and so I avoided using it.

There is bias for preferred candidate and bias against non-preferred. Being aware of such bias may be something to note when reading a post regarding a candidate. That's all.

Engaging in a back-n-forth on my levels of botherness is probably a waste of both our time. But I will acknowledge my bias towards positive viewing of Sen. Warren and I think she will make a strong candidate and awesome president.

153. Thank you for sharing this opinion

I'll respond with my own countering opinion that many real Democrats do believe that Sen. Sanders is electable.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Bernie Sanders

175. In the real world, Sen. Sanders is electable

***insert link to twitter opinion that supports my opinion here***

Just my opinion. Feel free to keep yours and I'm going to do the same regarding mine.

edited to add: We will see how our opinions are supported by reality once people actually start voting. I wish your preferred candidate success and ultimate victory in 2020 over trump.

176. If sanders is the nominee, trump will win 45+ states

From the Political Wire-- How Bernie Sanders Thinks He’ll Win the Nomination https://politicalwire.com/2019/04/18/how-bernie-sanders-thinks-hell-win-nomination/
The Atlantic: “He’s counting on winning Iowa and New Hampshire, where he was already surprisingly strong in 2016, and hoping that Cory Booker and Kamala Harris will split the black electorate in South Carolina and give him a path to slip through there, too. And then, Sanders aides believe, he’ll easily win enough delegates to put him into contention at the convention. They say they don’t need him to get more than 30 percent to make that happen.”

Even Mondale got more support than sanders

177. I'm 100% Sanders But Don't Mind It

My thinking is simple: lots of people use abbreviations and acronyms. I only type 30 words per minute on a good day. I typically take the time to type in full sentences but also use a desktop to do so. Many others, including Generation Z, predominantly use mobile devices. For them, abbreviations and acronyms rule the day.

I realize that some Bernie haters fancy themselves clever by associating his initials with "Body Odor".

His lack of a middle name, while somewhat unusual, is less uncommon in Europe. My wife, born in Germany, has no middle name. On her birth certificate, that field is blank.

186. Well EW isn't exactly flattering either...

But they are her initials. I got better things to do than to be angsting out over a candid's initials.

188. Of course, its why they use it.

The initials of other politicians do not also stand for a derogatory term and btw, its not subtle.
