Yeah Warren on the Social Security answer

Finally a politician who doesn't accept the idea that Social Security will not be there for the young. She gave the real numbers, about time we heard that.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

I think that even if Secretary Clinton had asked him, his ego wouldn't have allowed him to say yes. He is not a man who can stand playing second fiddle - he'd rather do nothing at all than not get to lead. He never accepted a subordinate role in his life - he showed he'd rather be unemployed until his 40s, being reduced to stealing electricity from his neighbor, and disadvantaging his child, than work for someone on a permanent basis. Even when he did start shaping up and run for election, it was for the position as Mayor rather than city councilor/alderman. When he was elected to the House and ever since, he's refused to join a party - he'd rather stand alone than be a part of a hierarchy. When he nominally joined the Democratic Party, it was because he was trying to become its leader, and the moment that failed, he became Independent again.

No, I highly doubt Senator Sanders would have said yes to becoming Vice President - everything in his history shows that he refuses to submit to anyone.

Joe Biden

you can more easily and equitably expand the system by applying the tax to capital gains, and dividends and interest.

if you scrap the cap, you have to do 1 of 2 things-
give commensurate benefits to bill gates and warren buffet (ok, bad examples. they likely dont get wages. ok, jami diamond.) out of what is supposed to be a retirement FLOOR for all americans.
or
turn it into an instrument of wealth distribution by taxing people w/o proportion to their benefits.
if you think the rich hate it now, try this.
if you think that the current stakeholders arent proud that it is an earned benefit, try this.

dont scrap the cap. expand the pool.

if you pay bill gates following the same formula that is now applied to those getting max bennies, based on what they paid in, that doesnt help the system any more than adding 100 average earners (not an actual number)

widen the pool.
not everyone who lives on dividends or capital gains is rich enough to afford a good retirement. lots of them could use a floor, too.
and that is what it is supposed to be. a floor. a safety net. dont need to turn it into a silk parachute for the gates' of the world.

exempt ira's and 401k's, or just exempt those gains for those that also work for wages.

no longer work for wages and often have their savings in mutual funds (not IRAs or 401Ks) in these times of almost no interest on savings in banks. It's something that needs to be tweaked somehow. It's how we survive.

raised a year.

I guess it's a start, but $100 Billion barely covers 10% of the current annual Deficit, much less providing funds for reducing debt, healthcare for all, education, bolstering Medicare and Social Security, expanding welfare for poor, climate change, jobs, infrastructure, etc.

Some candidate is going to have to be honest about taxes are going to have to increase for everyone but the poor.

Of course, that honest politician will lose because no one wants to here that, they prefer taxing the rich. Again, that's a start and should be implemented soon, but it won't change the Medicare or Social Security situation, or contribute significantly to the needs above.

I would prefer us to reverse the changes made in the 1980's. Raise income taxes back up and use the surplus to pay back the money borrowed from Social Security.

And, the government's own analysis say it won't solve the whole Social Security problem because removing the cap also means increased benefits. It helps because those that pay more, get less in benefits. But it still leaves a gap.

So, we have a 15 percentage point increase in income tax for Social Security and Medicare, a 7% wealth tax. and we still haven't gotten to handling healthcare, Deficit and Debt reduction, education, safety net, etc.

We are in trouble and somebody better step up to the plate with a comprehensive plan that is viable.

Or we can kick the can down the road and hope like hell the GOP is not in power when the chit hits.

and figure out how to work in the gig economy. right now all those people have to pay both the employer and employee portions. we gotta figure out how that works for uber drivers.

the cap is integral to the idea that it is an earned benefit, and that it is a FLOOR for retirement.
