Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhy We Switched.....
We have been studying the Candidates: Harris, Buttigieg and Warren for the last three weeks. As hard Kamala supporters three weeks ago, it was doubtful at that time a switch was coming....
Then, Buttigieg impressed us a bit after his first Town Hall -- and remembering his run for DNC Chair, which was impressive. However, the firing of the African-American South Bend Police Chief and the "Well, I just got on the job when I done it" -- so to speak -- without speaking with the African-American South Bend Community first to navigate their thoughts, was a deal breaker.
Next, Senator Harris has had a complexing three weeks. She started out STRONG and appeared to fade away. Could have been lack of TV Airtime but, not all the way. First, she went on the Breakfast Club a popular morning drive show in the Urban Community -- and said then she supported reparations. No, "Let's Study It" or have a Committee to Research It -- just she supported it. Okay.
The whole weed thingy was a huge turn off on the same show however, we forgave her for that. She should have talked more about EQUITY with legal Marijuana as it relates to Minority Interests profiting from the industry -- but with the Reparations remark on the same show - we thought she will get to this later.
And for three weeks later never came.
Then, tonight was the flip-flop and boy was it. Kamala Harris now wants to study, (Yes, Study) reparations. Really Now? That's what Cory Booker said so -- if she really felt this way, why say one thing on The Breakfast Club and another before a largely Caucasian CNN Audience this evening? That doesn't fly and she should have stuck with her first answer or just said what Booker said, period.
Moving on, Senator Elizabeth Warren has been knocking it out of the park the last three weeks. First, she said what many were thinking after the Mueller Report which was Impeach Donald Trump. As for reparations, she agreed initially after Harris statement and agreed again tonight in her CNN Town Hall.
Her Reducing Student Loan Debt pledge of $50,000 of families and individuals making under $100K is a form of such and not only helps African-Americans but ANYONE with Ball and Chain Student Loan Debt.
Lastly, her presence was excellent tonight (and she has not been on TV much either the last three weeks), her story about coming up from waiting tables to teaching special education students in K-12 to being a former Republican turned off by the GOP policies in the early 1990's, to a college professor understanding how Financial affairs worked and a willingness to Teach Others -- plus take on Big Corporations -- just hit home, period.
Warren's story is America's story and its real. Not for the moment, not for the TV Camera of the day, not for whatever network she's on, not for show -- its just her. Take it or Leave it.
Tonight, we decided to take it. Good Luck Senator Elizabeth Warren and keep up the good work building the grassroots. It's working!

(2,113 posts)"reparations" is about repairing and making amends. He doesn't feel that we can ever truly get past and move beyond racial injustice and division until the dark history of this country is actually acknowledged and and made right. I think many people forget that reparations are not necessarily about money. It's about making amends and making things right and we, as a society, can't do that until we are brutally honest about societal racial injustice.
I haven't listened to Warren as much as I have listened to Beto so I don't know how she is on race but I can say that Beto is absolutely the strongest candidate I have ever seen when it comes to being bold and honest about race issues, and he says the same thing no matter if the audience is diverse or mostly all white.

(22,492 posts)you did! I've always been so impressed by her...I know.my listing says Biden. When she was on t.v. and came out for impeachment, did you notice her eyes at the end? She was hopping mad, genuinely repulsed and disgusted by what she'd read in the report. ❤her!

(38 posts)Warren and Buttigieg in my opinion would be a dynamic duo. Warren with her political and middle class values and economic policies coupled with Buttigieg's ability to run a government entity would be a great fit. Buttigieg would gain the experience on a national platform to maintain the office after Warren's time was done. His temperament would add a note of gravitas to Warren's straight talk. Like them both and like their messages that are not flailing in the changeable winds of opinions.

(1,898 posts)I would vote for a Warren/Buttigieg ticket with a big smile and tell everyone I know to do likewise.
Mayor Pete's record as mayor is mixed, to be sure. To be fair, Obama could have done A LOT MORE in the area of community relations with the inner city, especially after Ferguson. That's no excuse but it's helpful to remember that Mayor Pete's clumsiness with the police chief was not unprecedented in American politics.
Even so, to have a Rhodes Scholar with a distinguished military career as VP would be great.

(2,113 posts)If anyone should stay in the Senate it's actually Sanders. Vermont will NOT automatically elect a Democratic Senator. The politics there are unique...and there is a very good chance a Republican would take that seat even after a state wide vote. I know this because I lived in Vermont for many years.

(2,113 posts)MA and VT are very different politically. VT is very conservative on guns and is mostly all rural voters. The local politics are not all liberal or all conservative. They are an unpredictable mixture. The only reason Bernie has been as successful in VT elections is because he was very well known as mayor of Burlington.

(1,898 posts)Them's the breaks. While it would be unfortunate to lose that seat for a while, we would pick up so many other seats in the Senate with Bernie at the top of the ticket barnstorming the country from the convention all the way to Election Day that we'd have 50+ again and plenty of momentum to make up for losing that one seat.

Frankly, her calm and unflappable demeanor will be comforting to people and play well against that orange thing and his theatrics.

(11,606 posts)I'm still with Mayor Pete but I'd be thrilled with Warren. She hit a home run with her Impeachment stance IMHO. It's still in early innings though. We have so many great choices.
Cheers
