(19,460 posts)Why should some pedophile who raped a child get to vote? Do your time, rehabilitate yourself and get your voting rights restored. Make the states restore voting rights to those who have served their time.

(612 posts)It would be helpful if you would stick to reality. You're drawing conclusions based on imaginary nonsense. And I find that your posts definitely do not advance any meaningful discussion for our Democratic candidates or their actual ideas.
You're certainly allowed to dislike Pete Buttigieg, but please deal with facts -- not fantasy. Thanks

(43,314 posts)A break from Sanders on prisoners voting
Buttigieg said prisoners should not be allowed to vote. "While incarcerated? No, I don't think so," the South Bend mayor said.
His position was a break from Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who had advocated voting rights for incarcerated Americans, and Sen. Kamala Harris of California, who said that "we should have that conversation."

(108,976 posts)it's a very popular political position, and I wouldn't want to go down with that ship.
I do think the right to vote should automatically be restored after a sentence has been completed. No one should have to apply, as they do in Florida.

(17,984 posts)I think candidates need to quit taking the media 5 second sound bite questions.
I would suggest they answer every one of those questions by answering, I want to talk about what we can do for the whole country, not the divisive subjects that continue to divide us!
Of course I am not in charge of any campaign but have used that same tactic in local politics, meetings, even in Church. I once told a group of men, board members in Church who were trying to outdo each other on projects by reminding them we were in a recession. The Pastor told them they should listen to me!
Democrats need to concentrate on the basics that need to be done first. Infrastructure that will create good paying jobs, thus more money in the Treasury in taxes.
Of course you have to prime the pump. Cut the Military budget, bring our Military home, quit feeding useless wars that kill and profit the wealthy.
Create a fair tax bill. Fix the Social programs by ending the top bracket. These are absolutes, then we can go on to the wants.
Pardon corrections. Mind faster than fingers!

(612 posts)What's your motive for doing this? It feels like you're trying to sow discord. If I can be blunt, Bili, What time is it in Moscow, or perhaps St Petersburg? Or convince me that you simply want to participate in productive political discussion.

once they've served their time, they need their voting rights restored. But part of prison is losing rights... I would like to see more rehabilitation - education and job opportunities - for people to fully re-enter society.

(4,558 posts)Neither the BS or PB proposals are of any consequence.
The House may pass such a bill, but even with best case senate projections, we wouldn't get a full party vote in the senate on any such bill. At best it would fall 3 or 4 short.
I seriously doubt that if such a bill did make it through the House and the Senate that a President Buttigieg would use the Veto pen.
As I've said many times, and will continue to say: Almost all of these position politics for POTUS are so damn pointless. CONGRESS makes the bills, the President only either signs them into law or veto's them.
I really wish we had at least half as many threads on upcoming senate races as we do just on the Presidency. The president only needs to be someone who will make great appointments, sign off on bills that our party get to her/his desk, veto's bills that the tRumpublicons push through, and pick a damn good cabinet.
Who are the Senators in upcoming Democratic Primaries that would/wouldn't support this legislation? THAT'S the real question.
I agree with Buttigieg that convicted and incarcerated felons should not be voting in elections, BUT I also believe that our entire judicial system needs an overhaul that stops the disproportionate targeting, arresting, and convicting of minorities effectively disenfranchising their voting rights. A good place to start would be with victimless archaic anti-drug laws.
