What Biden did so much better than what any of the other candidates did when they announced

is that Biden went straight for the throat of Donald Trump with his Charlottesville message when he announced his run for President this morning.

No talk about issues, no sidestepping Trump's name. He went straight for Trump's jugular.

I haven't been excited about Biden jumping in, but that message excited me.

And I believe he can. I still remember how he manhandled Ryan in the 2012 VP debate. He treated him like the juvenile he was.

64. The down side

 

Biden is very iffy for me. For starters, there is his deep commitment to Wall Street - he has voted to support multiple Wall Street agendas. There is also his treatment of Anita Hill, which still rankles considering that we have Thomas instead. And you might want to go listen to his speech in 1993 regarding the Crime Bill that was up for a vote at the time. Quite an appalling speech. He will have to negotiate and explain that position. I would think that that speech, in itself, could destroy his chances with the Black Community.

You sure have me questioning my support of Biden because I had NO IDEA that there were any of these problems. It's important you keep informing us of negatives of candidates we may, in our innocence, follow instead of telling us the positives of your choice.

76. Are you aware that Elizabeth Warren was a Republican until 1996?

 

Should she have to negotiate and explain that position? I support her and understand that people grow and change.

Joe Biden made VAWA possible. He came out for same-sex marriage before Obama did. People learn. They change. Let's hold our candidates accountable for their actions but recognize that fact.

I will admit that I really don’t want Biden to run. I think his time has passed, and like a certain other old person running (and a couple of younger ones), their main traits are being white, male, and recognized. But I think it’s good for all of us to know the story of what happened with Anita Hill’s testimony and the part played by Biden. It’s not what I’ve heard, and I think it’s far better if we all know the real story.

And a reminder to the nation of what they and we are.

Joe used Trump's name as shorthand for the enormous threats to us from the powers gathered against us on the right. What's happening is so much bigger than just Trump.

Here's what Joe said:

Charlottesville, Virginia is home to the author of one of the great documents in human history.

We know it by heart:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.


We’ve heard it so often, it’s almost a cliché. But it’s who we are. We also haven’t always lived up to these ideals — Thomas Jefferson himself didn’t.

But we have never before walked away from them.

Charlottesville is also home to a defining moment for this nation in the last few years. It was there, in August of 2017, that we saw Klansmen, white supremacists, and neo-Nazis come out into the open — their crazed faces illuminated by torches, veins bulging, bearing the fangs of racism. They chanted the same anti-Semitic and racist bile heard across Europe in the 1930s and 40s.

They were met by a courageous group of Americans, and a violent clash ensued. A brave young woman lost her life.

And that’s when we heard words from the President of the United States that stunned the world and shocked the conscience of our nation. He said there were some “very fine people on both sides.”

“Very fine people on both sides.”

With those words, the President of the United States assigned a moral equivalence between those spreading hate and those with the courage to stand against it. And in that moment, I knew the threat to this nation was unlike any I had seen in my lifetime. I wrote at the time that we were in the battle for the soul of this nation. That is even more true today.

We are in a battle for the soul of this nation.

I believe history will look back on four years of this president — and all he embraces — as an aberrant moment in time. But if we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation. Who we are.

I cannot stand by and watch that happen.

The core values of this nation — our standing in the world, our very democracy and everything that has made us who we are — are at stake.

That’s why today I’m announcing my candidacy for President of the United States.

Folks, America is an idea. An idea that’s stronger than any army, bigger than any ocean, more powerful than any dictator or tyrant. It gives hope to the most desperate people on earth. It guarantees everyone is treated with dignity. It gives hate no safe harbor.

And it instills in every single person in this country the belief that no matter where they start in life there’s nothing that you can’t achieve if you work at it.

That’s what we believe. And above all else — that’s what’s at stake in this election.

We can’t forget what happened in Charlottesville.

Even more important, we have to remember who we are.

This is America.

The debate about how to respond to Russia’s “sweeping and systematic” attack — and how to hold President Trump accountable for obstructing the investigation and possibly breaking the law — has been reduced to a false choice: immediate impeachment or nothing. History suggests there’s a better way to think about the choices ahead.

First, like in any time our nation is threatened, we have to remember that this is bigger than politics. What our country needs now is clear-eyed patriotism, not reflexive partisanship.
Whether they like it or not, Republicans in Congress share the constitutional responsibility to protect the country. ...

Second, Congress should hold substantive hearings that build on the Mueller report and fill in its gaps, not jump straight to an up-or-down vote on impeachment. ... Watergate offers a better precedent. Then, as now, there was an investigation that found evidence of corruption and a coverup. It was complemented by public hearings conducted by a Senate select committee, which insisted that executive privilege could not be used to shield criminal conduct and compelled White House aides to testify. The televised hearings added to the factual record and, crucially, helped the public understand the facts in a way that no dense legal report could. Similar hearings with Mueller, former White House counsel Donald McGahn and other key witnesses could do the same today.

During Watergate, the House Judiciary Committee also began a formal impeachment inquiry that was led by John Doar, a widely respected former Justice Department official and hero of the civil rights struggle. He was determined to run a process that the public and history would judge as fair and thorough, no matter the outcome. If today’s House proceeds to an impeachment inquiry, I hope it will find someone as distinguished and principled as Doar to lead it.

Third, Congress can’t forget that the issue today is not just the president’s possible obstruction of justice — it’s also our national security. After 9/11, Congress established an independent, bipartisan commission to recommend steps that would help guard against future attacks. We need a similar commission today to help protect our elections. This is necessary because the president of the United States has proved himself unwilling to defend our nation from a clear and present danger. ...

Fourth, while House Democrats pursue these efforts, they also should stay focused on the sensible agenda that voters demanded in the midterms, from protecting health care to investing in infrastructure. During Watergate, Congress passed major legislation such as the War Powers Act, the Endangered Species Act and the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1973. For today’s Democrats, it’s not only possible to move forward on multiple fronts at the same time, it’s essential. The House has already passed sweeping reforms that would strengthen voting rights and crack down on corruption, and now is the time for Democrats to keep their foot on the gas and put pressure on the do-nothing Senate. It’s critical to remind the American people that Democrats are in the solutions business and can walk and chew gum at the same time.

We have to get this right. The Mueller report isn’t just a reckoning about our recent history; it’s also a warning about the future. Unless checked, the Russians will interfere again in 2020, and possibly other adversaries, such as China or North Korea, will as well. This is an urgent threat. ... 27. As a middle-aged white guy, I feel your pain, as someone once said.

 

But that said, he does set the example we so desperately need right now, especially from old white men.

That said, I'm also well past ready for a female president.
I could support Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren every bit as enthusiastically.
Both are very impressive.

But if it's going to be another white dude this time around, Biden has my vote. I like Mayor Pete and O'Rourke a lot as well, but I do think that we're in a moment where the experience and wisdom that Biden brings to the table will be very important.

33. He's got the right spirit and general idea.

 

But as for wisdom, he supported the Iraq war, one of the biggest blunders in recent history. He has blamed underpaid and stretched-thin teachers for our crumbling schools rather than addressing school and university under-funding (while enduring bureaucracy bloat which ate up teacher salaries and destroyed the arts/humanities curriculum).

He's got a good vibe, though, and more traditional Americans might simply go for the familarity and vibe factor. Kamala Harris should be his running mate and position her for a run 4 years later (use Biden as a corrective and Harris as the smarter replacement). THEN invite Warren in as a policy genius and give her 12 terms of leadership on the inside. Cory, Pete and Bernie would be great as cabinet posts as well... That West Coast guy, Jay Inslee who is spot on about fighting global warming should be head of the EPA...

But I'll vote for any Democrat and any combination of the current slate.

His voting record isn't my favorite, and age is one reason I am undecided instead of going straight to Bernie again. It is nothing against old people. I just think 76, 77 could really be testing for the person. I prefer more than just nibbling at the edges of the system, so I am seriously considering Warren.

whom he knows and respects (and the respect is mutual).

My fantasy for a minute was Joe at the helm, Pete as VP -- yeah, two white guys but one is gay, but don't think that'll fly.

I think they're both exceptionally good, special people (I actually think that of all the candidates -- just more about Pete and Joe)

... with the super rich.

If he can "get" the general concept of an environmentally responsible infrastructure and job creation (the Green New Deal basically), and put more focus on foreign diplomacy than saber rattling, I could get behind him... (and if Kamala is his young running mate).

Otherwise I'm all for Warren with the chutzpah factor (and Bernie for inspiring everyone to follow the money, challenge the bloated rich, and not be afraid of Medicare for all).

Just put her in her place right where she belonged: a pathetic excuse for a complete idiot, but wrapped in nice-looking packaging - who was an embarrassingly poor choice to stand one heartbeat away from the Presidency.

And Clinton lost. Negative campaigns work to a degree, but they ultimately do not win. We need to tell the people what we stand for, what we will do and how we will do it. We need to make that litany of positivy the basis of our message and to take that campaign to all fifty states.

I saw the most important stand that we as Democrats must take to right the American ship of state! If our country goes down to trumpism, we will have lost the country we love. Policies are important, but without defending our democratic republic, our policies will never see the light of day. I look forward to the primaries to see our strong Democratic candidates present themselves on the national stage.

PS. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 3 million votes. We need to work on increasing that number for our next Democratic candidate.

The national popular vote is meaningless, because the nation is not governed by popular vote. This nation a federation of states and, while the states are governed by the people, the nation is governed by the states.

Laws are passed by a consensus of states - by a vote of representatives elected by the states in Congress. Treaties are ratified by a vote of Senators elected by the states in the Senate. Judges are confirmed by Senators elected by the states in the Senate. Amendments are first approved by representatives elected by the states in Congress and then ratified by state legislatures.

And, in a process entirely consistent with all of that, the president is elected by electors elected by the states.

He saw me wiping away tears. Him using the Declaration as the start gripped me. He did not pull punches about Trump and reminded people of Trump’s “very fine people” while showing the faces of neonazis twisted in hate. I wept for Heather Heyer and out of anger about what damage Trump has done.

And then, he talks about how America is an idea. I fundamentally believe that. I hope we see more messages from Joe like this.

but it really is just a mish mosh of cliches and heart tuggers. It's also a slightly disingenuous use of the "I am a warrior against White Supremacy" canard... he is after all, an older white man of privilege. He obviously has very good media people working for him. I think the soundtrack is a subliminal art...

Disclosure: I am a Warren supporter. I think Biden would be a fine President but he's not in my top tier... for reasons. I don't think my impression of this announcement is affected unduly by my lack of enthusiasm for him as a candidate.

Voters who watch Biden’s announcement could picture Biden turning to Trump and scolding him that there aren’t “very fine people” on the neo-Nazi side or going after him for lying about a super-duper health-care plan and falsely promising that plants in Ohio wouldn’t close and that a trade war would be easy to win. The mix of disdain and disgust that Biden evidences when talking about Trump not only channels what Democratic voters are feeling but also serves as a coming-attractions reel for the general election.

One can imagine Biden needling Trump before the primaries even begin. “He complimented Kim Jong Un, and even reportedly told a U.S. envoy to agree to pay a $2 million bill from North Korea for “medical care” of American Otto Warmbier?! How weak, how pathetic is that?” or “Trump ripped little kids at the border from the arms of their mothers. How dare he!”

By putting Trump on defense, showing Democratic primary voters just how scrappy he is, using his foreign-policy credentials and displaying the empathy and decency that he is well-known for, Biden might provoke Trump and thereby make himself the de facto Democratic pugilist against Trump. If by some miracle Trump restrains himself, Biden will nevertheless show that he can land body blows and make it that much harder for Republicans to defend the president.
