During the Primary Season, Ask Yourself This Question:

What is really the job of the President of the United States?

Here's what I think that job is: The President is responsible for setting the tone of the government. Presidents have limited powers. They can't create new laws. They can't determine the national budget. They can't really fund anything. They can send the military here and there pretty much as they please, within some limits.

But, they can set the tone for the nation. We've certainly seen that with Trump. He set a tone of hatred, bigotry, bluster, divisiveness, and ineffectiveness. The result is that the only things that have gotten done were negative.

We need a change of tone in Washington. We need a President who can calm our spirits, work with Congress, and move things along in a progressive direction. We don't need what we've had for over two years now. We need to correct the damage Donald Trump has done internally and internationally. We need some solid reason and thoughtfulness in the White House.

As you're thinking about candidates to become our Democratic nominee, I hope you'll consider what tone each would establish, beginning in January of 2021. That's a very important place to start in choosing your favorite candidate.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

more critical that our ship of state be taken over by experienced steady hand.

I gave to Biden this morning. I believe it is critical that the message of his campaign be supported.

I really like some of the others, Warren in particular, but we can stop the corrosion fastest with Joe.

for the rest of the world.
They wouldn't have to take time to get to know him or his policies.

“Uncle Joe” is used as a pejorative at times but it also has the familiar, reliable, admirable quality we need. Add the Happy Warrior and experienced statesman to that and the only thing left on my wish list is that he’ll be very inclusive of progressive policies and people.

Joe’s smart. I think we can do this.

I think sometime in the future you should send everyone a reminder about this by posting the first sentence in your last paragraph as the subject of another thread. Good stuff!
