Biden lets America know that help is on the way

“This is America.” That is the last line in the video former Vice President Joe Biden launched this morning in his long-anticipated 2020 Democratic presidential primary candidate announcement.
The video was incredibly compelling as it spoke to a moment in our history that rocked the soul and conscience of the country — the march of white nationalists in Charlottesville that pit neo-Nazis against counter-protesters who marched against hate and racism.

The horrible conflict was followed by Trump's deplorable comments equating the two groups, saying, “There were fine people on both sides."

As an immigrant Latina who's raising bilingual Latino children and whose heart has been broken, along with countless other Americans at what this president is doing to the fabric of our country, Joe Biden’s words moved me and his message shook me to my core.

His speech made me feel like there was help on the way from someone who truly understood just how much of an existential threat Donald Trump is to America.

1. I've been thinking about the message in his announcement video a lot.

I think there are a lot of people who don't fully realize just how much damage Trump himself has done to the government, and how Trump and his supporters have changed the political and social atmosphere of our nation. I also get that it's tempting to think about the Obama years with great affection, and to want to "go back," but I think there's so much damage that has been done that going back just isn't possible. In addition, the Obama years were marked with plenty of social upheaval, all of which remind us that Trump's presidency is a feature of America, not a bug. This is America. What you see is what you get. We can definitely make it better, but pretending that we're something we're not isn't helpful. I get why Biden is taking this tack and he's definitely the candidate who can pull it off, and I get that he's talking to Democrats, not the entire electorate. On a bigger scale, I don't think it's realistic.

4. I agree, and I'm not sure why more people don't see.

They seem so nostalgic for the Obama years, but they weren't so great. We had a great President and made some important progress on some issues but that's it. But we saw a rise in racial tension, increasing political divisions, lots of Republican obstruction, an increasingly dangerous international scene, wealth and power moving upward and stagnant wages.

All that set the stage for Trump. We can't go back to it. We've got to try something new. Some say we are in crisis and now is not the time try new things. But in the political world, a crisis is often the best time to try something new. A crisis is when you find out the old ways didn't work.

There is no going back. There never really is. We can only look at the best way of going forward.

I don't think we need to go back to anything. Joe is not what the new generation needs. I love joe, but we need a younger voice and young ideas to move to a new era.

9. Yeah, I don't feel like it's a young/old thing. It's that he still thinks bipartisanship and good-

faith arguments are the way to solve all problems. That's not where we are, and we certainly aren't going to go back there, especially if the Democrats win the presidential election in 2020. His approach is simply not nimble or flexible enough to deliver on what he's trying to promise.

We've all been living this collective global nightmare for over 2 years now. We needed this.
