Democratic Primaries

AMES, Iowa If Beto ORourke does run for president, he wont be starting from scratch.
Democratic activists in places like Iowa, whose early contests shape the nomination fight, know his name, even if he hasnt yet joined the growing list of Democrats stopping into their coffee shops and union halls.
But hell face a decidedly mixed reception, ranging from the ecstatic enthusiasm he generated at rallies during his bid to topple Sen. Ted Cruz last fall to outright irritation from the likes of Marsha Readhead, 74, a retired nurse who attended the Story County Democrats soup supper in a church basement in Ames on Saturday night.
Weve got a lot of candidates in the mill. Its overwhelming, she said. Theres too many people. Im very worried about it.

(10,721 posts)Biden simply because he was Obama's VP and has the most name recognition. Otherwise, everyone would think it's crazy to even consider nominating him. 76-year-old white male, gaffe-prone, baggage, never came close to getting nominated in previous 2 attempts, etc. But the fact of the matter is, he was Obama's VP, and that makes him a contender.
And Beto because he's just a one-of-a-kind rock star. As soon as he joins the race, he's probably a top 4 contender. Were he to become president, he'd take office at age 48. The average age of the last 5 Democratic presidents upon taking office? 48.
Marsha should realize that many of the candidates will have dropped out before the Iowa caucus. In the meantime, we will see a very crowded debate stage, limiting how much time each candidate has to speak, even with the DNC's plan of having just half the field on stage each night.

(295,929 posts)did an excellent job as Pres Obama's VP. He and his wife Jill. Obama really likes them a lot.
Also.. It will be so interesting to have Beto on board the Democratic Candidate Train.. Rolling across the country.

(10,721 posts)I do think, though, that we may be reminded of why he came up way short in his previous attempts to get nominated (plus, he's now 76, making him even older than Trump).

As you can tell he's not my first choice.. Just on some level in the back of my mind.. I'm just glad he's going to run. I could be wrong, of course. Anything could happen.

(11,584 posts)I already got my Beto 2020 hat last November after the midterms even though at this point I'm torn between he, Warren, and Harris. I love his appeal to millenials and perhaps Hispanics and I also love that he can speak with so much experience and authority on Trump's signature issue, his bullshit border wall.

(16,162 posts)But there is an irritating sense of entitlement around the first in the nation status and how many of the voters there expect to be catered to individually. I find it annoying.
