Ali Veshi guest, who suggested Pete's 'tape problem' was actually a tape OF Pete, hidden by him,

was wrong, and bad news to challenge Pete vs others. (Ali sitting in for Chris Hayes.)

'In 2012, Buttigieg demoted South Bend police chief Darryl Boykins after a federal investigation found that the police department had improperly recorded telephone calls.[39] He also fired the police department's communications director, who had "discovered the recordings but continued to record the line at Boykins' command".[39] The police communications director alleged that the recordings captured four senior police officers making racist remarks and discussing illegal acts.[39][40] Buttigieg opted to settle suits brought by Boykins, the communications director, and the four officers out of court.[39][41] A federal judge ruled in 2015 that Boykins's recordings violated the Federal Wiretap Act.[40] Buttigieg came under pressure from political opponents to release the tapes, but said that doing so would be a violation of the Wiretap Act.[40] He called for the eradication of racial bias in the police force.[39] An Indiana court is currently hearing a case for release of the tapes.' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Buttigieg

Guest seemed to favor E. Warren as the smartest; I won't complain about that, but DON'T misstate facts and leave innuendo, especially when introducing a 'hot' issue.

My gripe of the moment.

inferred innuendo and claptrap that the super troll (the one here on DU with like 10, 15 banned accounts a couple days ago) was trying to spin up on here. She sounds like a Bernie-style (NOT that she is pro Bernie) attack person. TYT and other Bernie outfits have people scouring South Bend for dirt (far more than any other campaign that I know of)

1 The policy (or lack there of thing. Pete has addressed this over and over plus has a new 990 (yes that many) subject database (with a lot of base foundations for policy) website out just a couple days ago.

'Meet Pete', his new database on issues and policy 990 Subjects

https://meetpete.org/tags.html

2 The housing situation (which has been SO SPUN) and minority poverty rate (which is still double the national average, but has dramatically decreased under Buttigieg)

Below is a superb article that calls out so much bullshit on the housing situation. In almost every article, Regina Preston-Williams is used as a primary source, and she is running for mayor and has pretty large reasons to go after Pete (she was sued by the City, and I document that in large detail here https://www.democraticunderground.com/1293283 ) TYT and the Sanders camp is really trying to dig up dirt hard and use here a lot, and the below article goes into it in detail (not about TYT per se, but other bottom feeder journos).

How the Media Is Getting Mayor Pete’s Gentrification Story Wrong

federal investigation for illegal wiretapping. Boykins had found out over a year before that an old taping system designed for cops to not miss tips was still up and running. He let it run and the communications director, Karen DePaepe, listened to them for months. She heard something, took it to Boykins, and he tried to threaten the cops. They freaked out and called the Feds. Those tapes have been judged to be illegal by a Federal judge in 2015 and needed to be destroyed, but an appellate court said it had to be settled in a state court, where it stands now (and the judge is RW Rethug appointed by Pence). Buttigieg asked for Boykins resignation, which he gave, but the next morning he took it back. After that he was demoted to captain, and the communications director was fired. Boykins stayed on at the force as a captain until he retired 5 years later, in 2017.

Everyone sued, the cops got half a million USD, Boykins got only 75K, and Karen DePaepe got 235K.

If Buttigieg had broken the rules and released those potentially (and every agency and judgement so far has said they are illegal) illegal tapes, he could have opened up the city to millions more in lawsuits. The who thing (which again started before he was mayor) has already cost South Bend over 2 millions USD.

I so smell political skulduggery as the judge it was kicked down to,(after a Federal judge said the tapes were illegal, it was appealed and kicked to a state court) St. Joseph County Superior Court Judge Steven Hostetler, is a RW Republican who was a finalist for Pence to place on the Indiana Supreme Court. Pence also placed him there on the bench in the first place. Every ruling so far has said the tapes were illegal wiretapping and should be destroyed (except for the federal appeals case, which just kicked it back to the state courts.)

He has a lot of political motivation to try and shit stir this whole thing, and just 3 days he now ruled the whole thing is going to drag on even more. It is already at 7 years (8 it you count the year before Pete) and counting.

St. Joseph County Judge Steven Hostetler a finalist for Supreme Court

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Steven L. Hostetler is among three finalists recommended to Gov. Mike Pence to fill an upcoming vacancy on the state's Supreme Court.

https://ballotpedia.org/Steven_L._Hostetler

Steven L. Hostetler is a judge for the Superior Court of St. Joseph County, Indiana. He was appointed to the court by Governor Mike Pence to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of former judge Michael P. Scopelitis. Hostetler assumed office on June 6, 2013.

Buttigieg has not listened to the tapes, and his (until the next mayor takes over) office is just the custodial guardian.

chief retired in 2017. The tapes happened before his watch, and will be ultimately decided after it. I do not trust that judge, that is for sure. I am sure the whole thing ends up in the Indiana Supreme Court and we will not know the ultimate outcome for years.

The City Council (not Buttigieg at all) is playing with fire, and may end up costing their city a far more insane amount of money than they already have.

Indiana state law contains a very strong constitutional 'fruit of the poisonous tree' doctrine, that extends the exclusionary rule to exclude most all evidence directly or derivatively obtained from illegal conduct. Those tapes would certainly prima facie appear to fall under it.

Not awful, but I do worry that he's being labelled the candidate that POC should be suspicious of.

On the other hand, it looks like Elizabeth Warren is overcoming all the media-driven handwringing about being too wonky, too professorial, too etc. etc. (I'd be very happy with her as our nominee, too.) So I hope Pete will similarly win people over once more people hear him, especially during the debates.
