(48,968 posts)can do with that number:
https://www.experian.com/blogs/ask-experian/what-should-i-do-if-my-drivers-license-number-is-stolen/
If someone gets your driver's license number, it is also concerning because it's connected to your vehicle registration and insurance policies, as well as records on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles, place of employment (that keep a copy of your driver's license on file), doctor's office, government agencies, and other entities. Having access to that one number can provide an identity thief with several pieces of information they want to know about you.
Next to your Social Security number, your driver's license number is one of the most important pieces of information to keep safe from thieves.
Think of all the driver's license numbers the Sanders campaign just made available on the internet...

(884 posts)Clearly you DO care, and the fact that you continue to make the DEMONSTRABLY false claim that people have been questioning the existence of the app, rather than the complaint that it revealed the data of 150 million voters, makes very clear that you are arguing in bad faith.

hlthe2b
(102,225 posts)I don't condone posters making false claims then trying to incite others to alert on an OP-- based on that false claim. Now THAT is bad faith and shameful. Repeatedly they have posted throughout the thread that (and I quote): "THIS DOESN"T EXIST'.
Perhaps you need to review the posters you are defending who have adopted that tactic. BE BETTER, better.

(884 posts)It states:
The BERN app was so poorly designed that for a couple hours today the personal voter IDs of 150m+ Americans was available freely and easily, in violation of laws in all 50 states and fed privacy statutes, and it was entirely the doing of the Sanders campaign. Think about that.
The story of the OP is VERY clearly about the app violating laws by exposing voter id's.
What you are citing is google results confirming that the app exists, not that it violated laws by exposing voter id's.
What people have said is that google produced NOTHING on the app violating laws by exposing voter id's.
NOT that google produced nothing regarding the app EXISTING.

BTW, you can give all the data on yourself you want. This app allows supports to point to others for the app to collect. That is unconscionable. As one who has repeatedly suffered the consequences of identity theft, I don't take my privacy so lightly. Perhaps you will learn the hard way as I did. Then you will understand why even many Bernie supporters (and I am an agnostic at the moment) find this unacceptable.

better
(884 posts)you would be correct, but that IS NOT what the story in the OP is about. You've been asked MANY times to point to any google results supporting the story the OP tweet tells, but you answer with nothing other than stories confirming that the app exists, which is not the thing being questioned. You have even been told many times that the app's existence is not what is being questioned, yet you continue to insist that it is, despite completely clear language proving that it is not.
And I am not defending the app.
I am defending the assertion that there seems to be no results in google supporting the claim that the OP tweet makes.
That will remain true no matter how many times you point to google results regarding SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY, or assert that people claimed something other than what we can all clearly see that they actually claimed.

Does Senator Sanders want this to happen to his supporters? Does he care that others might hijack his campaign app to do it to their political opponents, whether these opponents are Sanders supporters or not?
I do hope that Senator Sanders keeps in mind that he doesn't have much goodwill left in this area since his campaign showed it could not handle unwarranted access to other people's information last time, with the DNC database.

(884 posts)For starters, all indications are that the "personal information" being referenced is entirely from public voter information, i.e. voter registrations. This is about like criticizing a campaign for making it possible to look up someone's phone number, despite the fact that all they're actually doing is retrieving and displaying results from the white pages.
And for those who don't know how databases work, here's why your "voter id" being visible isn't necessarily anything to worry about.
Relational databases work by linking entries in multiple tables by the use of what are called foreign keys. Often, the key used is also the primary key, which is usually an automatically-incremented integer, with an enforced unique constraint. It's what allows you to make sure you're accessing the correct "John Doe" instead of all the wrong ones. It also serves the purpose of allowing the ID itself to be publicly visible without revealing any information related to that ID that should not be public.
Take for example a database with two tables, called voters and voter_demographics.
In voters table, columns:
voterID, voterName, partyAffiliation, registrationDate
In voter_demographics table, columns:
voterID, address, phone, etc...
The relationship between the two tables is on the voterID column in each table. But in order to access information from the demographics table, you either have to have user access to that table, or a web developer has to have created a view displaying information from that table, using credentials that do have that access.
One of the primary purposes of using relationships in database design is to be able to segment data such that certain classes of information are more broadly accessible than others. By storing private information in the demographics table, and public information in the voters table, it is possible to grant access to only the public information, by granting access to only the related table.
Unless you have the credentials for a database user with permissions to the demographics table or such a view exposing that data actually exists publicly, the voterID being visible while inspecting web traffic doesn't actually mean anything. It's just a value that is passed by the application to tell the database for which voter to display whatever information is allowed to be displayed. And what is allowed to be displayed can vary depending upon who and where you are.

(48,968 posts)This doesn't refer to that data breach, but does show legitimate concerns about the trouble adding info to the app could cause Sanders volunteers with family and friends (something I mentioned in another thread here about the app, when I was told it was a "strawman argument"...which this thread clearly shows it wasn't):
https://www.reddit.com/r/SandersForPresident/comments/bityu3/discussion_thread_lets_talk_about_bern_edition/
Also in the registration process on the app (I read the terms of service like a square) there are a number of typos.
I ran across a lot of tweets last night, too, from Sanders supporters admitting they were already running into negative reactions from people they knew, whether friends or family.
Note the wording there:
"tell us all about your friends and family"
At the organizing kickoff we were supposed to list as many people as we know (friends, family, acquaintances), and then once at home, enter them into the app (including their candidate preferences if we know what they are).

All I ask, is that you ask me before uploading your assessment of where I am on the Bernie spectrum.
