(6,774 posts)feature Obama. After all Obama and Biden worked closely for 8 years. I support Biden because he has the experience in and out of the White House. We just have to make sure that a strong progressive Dem woman runs with him. How does Biden/Harris sound?

Elizabeth Warren would be a good running mate but that is not going to happen.

(12,434 posts)Im not arguing with the people here at DU, but women are tired of being relegated to the back benches. When will it ever be time for a woman to be either president or VP? I know that primary voters will choose, but it just seems so obvious that many AmericansDemocrats and Republicans alikesimply refuse to see women as leaders. Is that why Warren and Harris are lower in the polls? There are excuses for both, like an abrasive personality or she just hasnt caught on, which have some validity. But its hard to argue that Donald Trumps abrasive personality hurt him. Why do weand the mediastill have such different standards for women. If the media had not treated Mayor Pete as their new political star, would he be where he is today?
I like Mayor Pete and he thinks well on his feet, but are his policies any better than Warrens. Is he smarter? Who knows, because both are smart. I will support whoever is nominated, but Ive now given up any hope that I will see a woman as president of this country in my lifetime. The power of the media to manipulate our impressions is great, even when we think we cant be manipulated. For example, what impact does story after story about Mayor Pete have when few stories exist for Kamala Harris? Obama was a media darling (except for right-wing media, of course), but he may have been an aberration because its still mostly a white mans game.

(85,462 posts)OR Warren? As VP. Any of those illustrious, brilliant, and accomplished women would be VERY well positioned to go for the next big one. And by the end of two terms, there may well be even more.
Bench strength. Thats what we need, and what weve got. And that grows by the day.
And whove they got (on the other side)? Nobody. Other than Nikki Haley. And thats about IT. And none of them on that side of the aisle are clamoring to put a woman on the ticket. Hell, they barely even consider a woman as being worth that. Were just containers to the GOP. Thats about it for the value they place on women.

(10,607 posts)Hillary Clinton, who I strongly admire by the way, was the most popular politician in America, but was unable to fight back against the Republican/Trump attacks that made many voters think she was incompetent and untrustworthy.
Elizabeth Warren, who I also think is fantastic, made a fool of herself when it came to taking a DNA test because Trump had attacked her. She has ruled herself out IMO, because she showed she would not withstand that hatred and lies against her that come with a presidential campaign against Trump and the Republicans.
Now Kamala Harris, I think she might have what it takes.

(8,147 posts)Sure Joe would need a younger candidate.
But it was college kids who caught the Bernie fever.
Kids in college and high school are in an inter generational world much more than at any other stage of life, one in which older teachers, sometimes several decades older, encourage young dreams, impart the skills needed to achieve them, introduce them to a world of ideas, to wisdom and knowledge outside their own experiences, and come to know their students personal concerns, passions, problems; and in turn, the best teachers respect and learn from their students.
Ive been a student and a teacher. Ive been a young and an older student; a young and an older teacher. What Ive learned is that age differences , within a mentoring context, often become complimentary facts.

(15,184 posts)over 632,000 people, who an average of $32K in student debt remit an average payment of $315 per month to the federal government or private banks.
That means that each year, in my state, the local economy is losing about $2.7 billion in foregone demand for local goods and services.
Student debt is a drag on this nation's economy, and has a whole generation of our children and grandchildren between a rock and a hard place. They have to go to college and get some kind of training to even hope to compete in the modern, global economy, but the costs of college have become astronomical. These are our children and grandchildren being victimized by this disgusting, predatory system, made into debt slaves.
Especially African American kids. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, in two longitudinal studies of student debt outcomes over a 12-year period, researchers found that the MEDIAN student debt principal balance for African-American students was OVER 100% of the original amount they borrowed when measured 12 years after their initial enrollment in the postsecondary program.
That is unconscionable, and the 2005 bankruptcy law did much to create this debt trap for our kids. Oh, they can alleviate student debt if they can prove 'undue hardship,' but the onus is on them - kids so squeezed by debt that they aren't starting new businesses, are delaying marriage, are delaying home ownership.
No, the fact Biden was one of four Democratic US Senators who supported this stinker of a law, and the fact he opposed several amendments that would have made things a little easier for borrowers...well, he has to answer for that. Because it was a bad move. It is bad policy.
Ideally, I'd like to see Biden repudiate it.

But as I said, the student debt aspect of the Bankruptcy Act was only one small part of the overall bill, there was a lot more involved than student debt.

(15,184 posts)that the new law was drafted specifically to be more advantageous to the credit card companies. In fact, the big companies like MBNA wanted the revisions because they projected being able to squeeze another $85 million a year out of people who under the old law would have been able to discharge that debt completely after their assets were liquidated.
That said, I'm with you on college. I didn't get any full-ride anything, but I went to a state college in my downtown urban area and graduated with no debt. I had to work, of course, and I got a few scholarships and grants that helped me.
Funny, because less than a decade later, I made it through grad school, but emerged with $15K in debt - fortunately I was able to refinance my house and clear that.
But now it's just crazy. In my own state, I'm strongly advocating that the business community begin to look at our kids as an investment in the future prosperity of the economy and create ways to have them be able to finish debt-free or at the least be able to get some of their loans forgiven.
The problem isn't confined to the federal level, either, but also the state legislatures who have reduced higher education funding over decades. Now it is unsustainable. Our state colleges and universities in my state only get about 1/3 of the cost of attendance from the state's General Fund, while 2/3 of the cost is passed on to students. Prior to 1993, this was reversed.
In the meantime, we've added nearly half a million to the Medicaid rolls, the prison population has grown at a 5% higher rate than the national average, and K-12's local tax revenues are stagnant, while the amount that needs to come from the state is growing on a steep upward curve. It is unsustainable.
That's why I bitch so much about the Federal Reserve Act, and advocate public banking so strongly, and gripe about the primacy of the shareholder doctrine - we are in a house of monetary and fiscal cards, and when it falls it's going to be horrible.
The Wall Street people and billionaires do great during downturns, of course; the rest of us not so much.
But back to Biden. He's a good guy and I will surely support him should my candidate be knocked out of the race. I am gratified this time around that our discussions are very much less rancorous than they were back in '16. I'm not seeing that as much now at all, except from one candidate. Sadly.
Regards!

Count me in with the sick-of-white-male-rule contingent. If they were so superior, why so many idiotic policies and decisions? I believe that if man-box group-think had been mitigated by the inclusion of other voices at the table for the past 2+ centuries, democracy wouldnt be on the brink of collapse. More of us would have nice thingslike life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
That said, Joe Biden is on the right end of the Ruthless/Ignorant/Misogynist/Racist/Homophobic/Violent/Authoritarian to Mayor Pete continuum. If the electorate hasnt evolved enough to recognize and advance the fierce urgency of RADICAL CHANGE NOW, so be it. NOTHING would keep me from the polling place to cast my vote for Joe.
