Do we truly want to address the thousands upon thousands of preventable deaths each year in the wealthiest nation in history caused by the greed of a for-profit health insurance industry which should be replaced with a single-payer system?

Many have argued, and I concur, that we shouldn't even refer to our system as "healthcare" because it is the opposite. We wring out every single penny of profit, causing many people to postpone treatment. Those people become more ill and when their disease is acute, then (often only then) will insurance help - and that often is because of state laws requiring such treatment.

Here in Florida, the reason we don't have even more deaths each year is a state law forbidding emergency wards from denying treatment to the uninsured.

Come on, people! Bernie is right. We can debate the mechanics. What we can't debate is that our current system is broken, kills thousands of our countrymen each year for no good reason and must be repaired so that we may join the larger global community in caring for the weakest and most vulnerable among us.

If Mexico City, after decades of abject poverty, can introduce Medicare for seniors (and at currency exchange rate of about 19:1 versus the greenback), we can provide Medicare for All!
