About Me

OK, hear me out.

So I understand, believe me, why Meta is no more. It was a grand experiment, and you're to be commended for trying it. But it was more heat than light, and it's gone. And we're all the better for it.

I propose, in the spirit of making lemonade from lemons (or perhaps more in the spirit of Germany burning sewage to generate electricity): let's bring it back from time to time for fundraisers, and make it pay-to-play.

Imagine... pick a charity, ask DUers who want to lay into one another (and you) to drop $5 for a 24-hour Meta slug-fest. The money rolls in, good is done -- think of it as a web-based dunking tank! Morally reprehensible under normal circumstances, but wholly appropriate when raising money for good causes.

I know, brilliant, right? No need to thank me.

Sunday Child Shooting Review

Here is just some of the gun violence involving children (16 and under) from only the past week (3/0--3/17) that you should be aware of, and which will hopefully motivate you to join the American Academy of Pediatrics and others who are advocating for ways to keep our kids safe.

Also, please visit the new Gun Control Reform Activism Group for more information about how DUers are working to stop gun violence.

This week's list would be almost precisely twice as long if I'd gone as high as 17 years old.

Here's to a better week.

Bang. One thousand one. Bang.

Sources said that Lanza's shooting spree lasted less than five minutes and that he fired 152 bullets while making his way through two classrooms in the elementary school.

One thousand one. One thousand two.

Lanza shot his way into the school through the glass windows at the front entrance and turned left toward the first-grade classrooms. He almost immediately encountered Principal Dawn Hochsprung and school psychologist Mary Scherlach, who ran into the hallway from a meeting room, which would have been on Lanza's right. He shot them both to death immediately.

One thousand three. One thousand four.

Lanza killed all but one student in Rousseau's class, where the children were massed together in a back corner of the room trying to get into a bathroom. One girl escaped because she played dead and ran out of the room after Lanza left.

One thousand five.

Lanza then backtracked to Soto's room. A source familiar with the investigation said authorities believe that Lanza started walking toward the back of Soto's classroom, where the bathroom was, when he noticed some of the children hiding under desks. Lanza shot those students.

One thousand six. One thousand seven. One thousand eight.

Some bullets struck three cars in the parking lot, and police originally investigated the theory that he was shooting at responding officers. They now believe that he was aiming at a teacher who was standing near the window. Lanza shot and killed himself in Soto's room with one of the two pistols that he was carrying as authorities were closing in.

One thousand nine.

Ten.

Eleven.

Lanza used a Bushmaster AR-15 semiautomatic rifle to shoot his victims and a pistol to kill himself.

This week's list would be half again as long if I went to age 17. Not a great week, but seemingly shorter than last.

Here's to better weeks.

Is it cool to change our questions to you after you've answered?

If so, use the agreed-upon code phrase, "Which ones?" so I'll know everything's A-OK.
